This championship uses a different style and is more a exhibition format - yet all the top players try to win it. It is a format to which players are invited with a healthy prize money added.
The competition kicked off in 2009 - but was not played in 2020 because of the Covid 19 virus. Throughout the eyar the following were the winners:-
Rafael Nadal - 5 series wins
Novak Djokovic - 4 series wins
Andy Murray - 2 series wins
Kevin Anderson - 1 series win
Nadal decided to make his comeback to tennis after a 6 month absence and both he and Andy Murray was invited as past series wiiners.
The format ends up playing two semi-final matches and then a final between the winners of the two semi's. The semi's were between -
* Andrey Rublev vs Denis Shapovalov; and
* Rafael Nadal vs Andy Murray,
The winners were Rublev and Murray. As a result the players will play today in -
* the third position play-off between Nadal and Shapovalov; and
* the final between Rublev and Murray
The first semi was vastly different from the second semi inasmuch as the ball was hitting harder and more precise when it came to hitting of winners, Rublev was lucky to beat Shapovalov since he made a lot of errors - but also hit more winners. He only had a 54% first service success rate.
The second semi entailed rather long games with very few winners being hit and the players making points by opposition mistakes. So Nadal made more mistakes than Murray, but this series regarded by him as the first step to playing full time in the World Tennis Championship and Aussie Open next month was rather iffy,
However - lets wait and see what happens in the two matches. Rublev sometimes find ways to lose matches against players who never beat him in the past. So lets wait and see what happens today.
