I think smith put them into bat to put them under pressure as i heard that almost everyone was shocked to see south africa bowl and not bat on this pitch, but it has shown that it does work aslo i think he put them into bat because of the over head conditions! heard there is  breeze to help dale and its overcast so i think that was the main reason behind the choice still nothing like a good 4 wickets down for less than 100 runs!
