Problems of Graeme Smith

I sometimes wonder whether this guy is still tops in cricket - he is basically often LBW.   However, according to his wife and her tweeting - as reported in timeslive - Smith has another problem that could also apply to cricket - something like penis before wicket.   I tried to paste the article here - but it did not work out.

Seriously now - I really think that Grame is getting to be a problem in the team.   he has bowed out as captain of the ODI and 20-20 sides.   Should he not be replaced completely in those sides?

Mike what do his averages say. I would not leave him out of the one day side. For who in any case.

The problem with Graeme Smith is the size of his head, messes with his balance. I have never liked the guy and even at times wanted the Proteas to fail just so that they could get rid of him. Don't know why, but the oke just gets under my skin.

Bluebok, He knows he is on the block. The other ting with him, he was made captain at a very young age and used that younthfull arrogance to his advantage, now that he is older people don't see it as a plus anymore. He just needs to grow out of it that is all.

His arrogance got us across the line on many occasions, heralding him as an Aussie type of South African.

Agreed Flash. GS is a true great and is still legend in the making. Hope he is able to grind out a couple more years. We will not likely see his equel at open bat for quite a while still, how people does not like him is beyond me, man those double tons against the Poms in England were legendary!

Those double tons are ancient history, back then even I could look past his arrogance. Compare him to Smit and then you can see why so many people don't like him. Look, I don't dispute that he is a fantastic batsman, but he always seemed to slump when it really mattered. I think he should never have been captain. Had that been the case he would not have been so arrogant, and he could have focussed purely on his batting. There were so many times that i remember comentators and other people in the know, questioning decisions he made as a captain. People forget that the captain is also an ambassador for the country, and I cringe to think of what other nationalities think of the average South African if he is the face of the country. Also, his epic fail after the last ODI world cup where he (And his team) folded, again, and he bravely ran away to Ireland, instead of coming home to face the country. Look, I am probably being unreasonable about him, but I can guarantee you, I don't stand alone.

I started this thread off as a joke - but it seems some people took it seriously.   I was one of the first people to punt Smith as captain - maybe that happened to early.   He started off brilliantly - but like in cases of other players the opposition studied his technique and developed antidotes exploiting his shortcomings. Over the last two years Smith's success rate in batting was something like 1 good innings in every 7 played by him.   He often goes out early being either LBW or caught behind and the opposition block off the areas where in the past he used to score big runs - that maybe being the main reason for his poor recent batting.   He was particularly poor in the WC in India and to my mind they should really start thinking of different options.

snippet I am also one who sees the value in Smith. If anyone doesnt they must name a better opening bat we can use. In any case he is a better bat than Alviro surely.

An average a fraction under 50 makes him one of our best ever. Anyone know of a SA opening bat with a better record?
