Wimbledon 2023

The draw for Wimbledon is to be done on Friday, but the qualifying Rounds are stating today with 128 players in the quarterfinals, 64 in the semi-finals and 32 in the finals.   The winners in the finals will g through to the main draw.

According to the latest reports Khachanov and  Carreno-Busta will not play and there are injury clouds over Sinner and Kyrgios as well,   I will wait until Friday to update the seedings

All the Round 1 matches have been completed at  19:30 tonight   and Dkokovic is playing his Round 2 match at the moment.    

The start of day one of Wimbledon was caused by rain delay.   Despite the rain  24 of the  32 Round 1 matches were completed.   7 matches were stopped due to it becoming too dark to play and 1 match did not even start,   The 8 matches was rescheduled for completion today together with the 32 Round 1 Top of the daw matches,   

So far there was 3 seeded players that lost their matches - Kyrgios (seeded 30)  ne0ve0r turned up to play and two seeds (Auger-Aliassime seeded 11 and Nishioka seeded 24) lost their matches  Two other seeded .players in the Bottom Half of the Draw can also lose their matches - they are in a desperate battle to reverse  early tends in their matches.  One of the two seeded players (Evans seeded 270 lost his match already.    

If the Round 1 matches scheduled for today is completed all the Roud 1 matches will be completed and Round 2 participants will be identified.   

So far today not a single match in the tournament was completed today and even those which was part of the carry-over matches from yesterday was in fact not completed.    Global warming is destroying Wimbledon.   The only match being played is between Alcaraz and Chardy being played under roof easily won by Alcaraz. 

2 unseeded UK players (Mury and Peniston are now being played under closed roof.  Part of the day 21 program was destroyed and also the whole of the Day 2 program suffered the same  fate.

According to the original schedule of games the Round 2 matches iro the Bottom Half of he Draw would have been played tomorrow (ie Wednesday - that would not be possible since 8 Round 1 matches is sill outstanding and there will be 29 Top of the Draw Round 1 matches still to be played.    The weather forecast for tomorrow seems to be better                          

The scheduled matches for today started of with -

*   6 Round 1 matches of the Bottom half of the draw scheduled to start at 12:00 Central African times - ie 11:00 UK time; 

*   after that between  11:00 and 16:00 a total of 29 Round 1 matches must be played.

Bearing in mind the fact it could lead to matches comprising of 4 and 5 setters the time sc hedule to allow for Round 2 matches starting at 16:00 UK time is unlikely to be achieved.            

This is indeed a disgrace - the tournament organization has been chaotic from the word go and there were chaotic late starts from Monday.   Rain has resulted in delays in completion  of matches with the result that 8 matches were not completed on Monday.   Then came along Tuesday and only 4 matches played  under cover completed.

I checked the weather forecast for the London area repeatedly on different channels and there was no forecast indicating rainy conditions in London today.   Yet the Wimbledon tournament  again showed a rain delay - but it is more likely court surface conditions that is causing the delay.

 Play eventually restarted at 14:40  - 5 but one game was interrupted for safety reasons and since then played was stopped again at 15:20 again due to rain.    It seems that the organization is chaotic and even though rainy weather contributed to the poor situation indications are that he organization is a total mess.       So far day not a SINGLE match was completed thus far today.

With less than half of the matshes of Round 2 played by the Top Half of the Draw completed where seeds like Tsitipas are in danger of losing against Murray - he is 2 sets to 1 down at the moment  15 of the 32 seeded players have thus far been beaten by unseeded players.   With Round 3 starting more seeds are bound to lose matches when they have to play seeded players for the first time in the tournament. 

In the bottom half of the draw  thing s look very good for Djokovic with only 7 of the 16 seeds surviving after completion of Round 2 of the tournament surviving - only Djokovic, Rublev and  Sinner of the top 10 players surviving at present.    Sinner will not face any seeded players until the quarterfinals

Sinner will play the unseeded  Halys in Round 3, Shapavalov (26) will phase Broady (who beat Ruud in Round 2)   and Rublev the unseeded Goffin , while Djokovic will play Wrawinka.   The remaining Round 3 matches in the Bottom Half  of the Draw will involve Bublik (23) facing Marterer - while  Musetti (14)  and Hurkacz (17) will play each other.   All three of Djokovic, Rublev (even him being unpredictable)  and Sinner are likely to go through to Round 4.

By the way Rublev had a terrible match  yesterday.   He was serving for the set in  the second set at 5-4 - lost the game and ended up losing the set 7-6.   He went down to 1-4  in the third set and ended up leading 5-4  in the set and that set ended up in a tie-breaker where Goffin was leading 5-2 - but Rublev was lucky to win the set after being down in the tiebreaker again.  

A repeat of the above will lose him the Round 4 match.  He lost against Bublik  on grass in Halle on grass anyway.     It was a slightly better display - he won the first two sets  and then lost the 3rd and 4th and won the 5th set.   Was on par with Rublev display yesterday.   So Rublev is through to the quarterfinals - but his next opponent will likely be Djokovic.

Congrats to Alcaraz in becoming the new Wimbledon Champion - he deserved the win, the first win by  Alcaraz at Wimbledon.      The fact is he will win many more major tournaments in future.   

He must surely be around the fastest player  ever. Total power too, pity about his cramps in France. 

Since August last year when Alcaraz played in in the following  Masters Tournaments:-

USA Maszters                 -    won

The Roland Garros tournament   - was runner up due to cramps

Wimbledon                      -    won.

To an extent I think they are overplaying Alcaraz in too many tournaments.   After winning in Barcelona and Madrid the third tournament he played in succeeding  weeks was the Italian Open where he left because of an injury concern.   There were concerns that he would not play at Roland Garros.    I think that if Alcaraz did not play in the Italian Open - he would have been in better physical condition.   Just before Alcaraz developed the cramp problem  the commentators said that Djokovic looked a beaten player. 

If he in fact plays I think Alcaraz will win in the US Open and in the Aussie Open in January next year.    He is an exceptional player and players like Djokovic lost on Sunday beaten by him.

I think by the time Alcaraz will achieve what no other players since the 1970's achieved namely  to win all four majors in one calendar year.    So far in his career he won on hard courts, clay courts and grass courts - that makes it possible for him to  achieve that distinction.
