Sri Lanka have only themselves to blame for the situation they find themselves in. Putting the Quoteas in to bat looked like a good decision for about 4 balls but after Cook's early wicket it proved to be yet another disaster for a captain trying to be clever by winning the toss and putting the opposition in to bat.

This game is as good as won now. You go Quinton!

Eish Piss Mint

In 2013, a survey was done from 1980 till the end of 2013 for this specific stat:

Batting First resulted in - 390 Wins - 443 Defeats

Taking the overall total score of batting first to 699 wins - 679 losses.

I have no idea what that new stat is now.

You would be that kind of captain that wants to still play 1906 cricket where they scored maybe 150 in a day.

Get with the times

It depends on so many different criteria these days on whether to bat first or bowl, and not one of them is history

I can't believe how ignorant and dumb he is, after every indication that the pitch had double the amount of grass it normally carries, verified by every commentator. Everyone knew that the pitch had been doctored to suit the Protea quicks as well as disadvantage the Sri Lankan batsmen who are used to slow pitches. Every commentator has commented on how difficult and tricky it was to bat on the first day and sang Elgar's praises for a gritty innings.
Best you shut-up and not embarrass yourself any further UrineRooi....but thanks for finally making an attempt at a cricket post Bwhahahahahhahhaaha you most ignorant Buffoon!

Oh and here's Dense . . . the dullard who left South Africa under a cloud (allegedly after spying on his neighbours for the apartheid government) and who arrived in Australia only to discover they were all crazy about the white man's game he used to despise but found out he better learn something about it otherwise he'd have nothing to talk about on the one in a million chance anyone was ever stupid enough to invite him to a barbeque.

Wehe!

Say Dense, did you ever work out that I'd actually answered your question about the origins of the win toss bat first adage? The Golden Rule you freely admit you'd never even heard about was coined over a hundred years ago!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahaha!

A hundred years and the cricket noob only discovers it today!

Maybe the best course of action would be to forget about surveys and have a look at the facts.
Another suggestion is to have an overall look at results from 1980 to date and from 2000 to date. A quick search on Statsguru reveals this in terms of the side who won the toss:
1980 - Date:Won Toss/Bat first: Total matches - 613Matches won - 310Matches lost - 303Link to search results

Won Toss/Field First:Total matches - 334Matches won - 178Matches lost - 156Link to search results

2000 - DateWon Toss/Bat first: Total matches - 384Matches won - 198Matches lost - 186Link to search results

Won Toss/Bat first: Total matches - 197Matches won - 102Matches lost - 95Link to search results

Seems to me that it is not necessarily a matter of win toss bat first but rather a matter of win the damn toss in order to be able to have the choice whether to bat or field first.
