With minutes left on the clock the Super Bowl was tied and the Chiefs were deep in the Eagles half. A holding penalty gave the Chiefs 4 more downs ….but instead of going for the touchdown the Chiefs runner put down a knee a metre out. The coaching staff had calculated the sequence to the second.
Two more times the quarter back took a knee using up much of the available time…and after the 4th down kick to put them ahead, there was only 8 seconds left on the clock. Not enough time for the Eagles to attempt another run if the return failed. So the receiver ran the ball about 20m and then put down a knee guaranteeing one more play with about 3 seconds on the clock.
Nothing came of the Eagles final pass but each coach gave themselves the highest probability of winning.
