Ben Smith was great on the wing but has shown very little at 13. Davies has been better as have JJ, Smith and Bosch.

Hooper would be my openside with Alberts or Measum as blindside. But had Luatua played more he would have tipped the lot.

Franks would be my 3 and Corbisiero or Beast my 1.

Piutau on the wing? He is not even a first choice All Black. Ben Smith should be on the wing, not at 13.
Habana is 10 times the better player than the big slab of meat Julian Savea
William Alberts as a fetcher.  ha ha

Why select AB props when their scrum creaked so often this year? Ben smith has certainly not convinced at centre.  Cooper looked better in the NH when his team dominated the collisions...pretty awful in the RC. Cole is a laughable choice at tighthead.
And to mention JJ in a discussion of a world team blows the mind.

Conrad Smith was probably the viewers choice as best 13 this year, but only because he was at best solid, nothing special. JJ got the better of him and for me JJ was the best test 13 this year

Disagree, all the Kiwi fans on here rate JJ and I know all my Pom mates think he has added a whole new dimension to what is required at 13.......they correctly see Willie and JJ adding the attacking clout SA have lacked for ages.

Its only the conservative Saffa's who cant see past the ponderous ordinary crap that the likes of Fourie has dished out this year. But no surprise there, the same clowns think Morne is the answer and better still they think Morne is better than Cooper......I kid you not

Put them in a RWC final and I guarantee you Morne will be better than the Quaalude.

I'd have Quade with his hands tied behind his back ahead of Morne......its insulting comparing the two. Morne is not fit to polish Quades boots.......at best he might be in line to tie his laces.

Imagine being a rugby follower and preferring Morne over Quade........it beggars belief.

15. Either Halfpenny/Dagg/Folau. My choice would be Halfpenny given a great 6N, Lions tour and solid EOYT. 14/11. You have to have Ben Smith. The other slot could easily go to Savea/Habana/North. 13. Conrad Smith/Davies. Smith edging it for me 12. Jean de Villiers since Jamie Roberts injuries have robbed him of game time against better opposition. 10. A tough choice this year but Dan Carter is still a cut above the rest imho. 9. Aaron Smith didnt have consistent competition. Perhaps Khan Foutali'i 8. Read with Duane/Parisse backing up. 7. Hooper was the most consistent openside this year 6. O'Brien/Messam/Luatua with Messam edging it 4/5. Really can only be Brodie and Eben with Whitelock/Charteris backing up. 3. Mas with Franks/Adam Jones challenging. 2. Bissie and Strauss 1. Corbisiero with Healy/Jenkins challenging. Didnt see much from southern hemisphere looseheads

I cannot begin to understand how Halfpenny finds favour ahead of Folau, Willie, Dagg and Mike Brown

Halfpenny has been recognised by the IRB as one of their players of the year. He was the player of the Lions Tour. You may think those accolades are not valid somehow but it shows a lot of knowledgeable rugby people differ from you.

Why because he has a great record with his goal kicking? He offers very little with ball in hand, is solid enough under the high ball and hardly a force in the tackle.

Its complete bullshit that he has been nominated. He is a handy enough player, but not even close to being the best in his position.

I would agree that his attacking play isnt the best but all round many pundits disagree with you concerning his nomination

He is the one poor nomination, the rest are spot on. Folau, Dagg, Willie, Foden, Beale, Hogg and Brown are all better 15's

That is your opinion. It seems other people dont just rate attacking play. Call it a philosophical difference

Reality is, too much credit it given to goal kickers...............look no further than Morne.....a very average rugby player with a great boot. Kicking should never define a player

Wehe! Guess which ignorant rugby noob hasn't twigged that #6 is the number given to the blindside flanker in every country but France and South Africa.

I do not look at individual matches to determine the true value of players - I look at a series and then comes up with the list.   Based on that there are several players who should be disqualified from the list of top players.

The disqualification players playing for the Springboks are Fourie, Morne Steyn - Willem Alberts - Jannie du Plessis.   In the case of the New Zealanders I would say it is Dagg, Nonu, Woodcock and Franks (both brothers).

Bearing in mind the actual performances of players in a series of games, I would say the following lists are candidates for the various positions - but in some positions there are in fact no outstanding players (like 13) - so we have a problem in those positions:-

15   Israel Folau, Brown, Leigh Halfpenny, Ben Smith, Willie le Roux (the latter 2 were also good as wings)

14/11 Ben Smith, Bryan Habana, Julian Savea, Willie le Roux, JP Pietersen, George North

13   Davies - the rest all have question marks and was not really outstanding

12   Jean de Villiers

10   Dan Carter

9   Very problematic - Aaron Smith (?), Fourie du Preez (?), Will Genia (???)

  8   Kieran Read, Duane Vermeulen

  7   Opensiders - Hooper, McCaw (?), Cane

  6   Blindsiders  -  Messam, Luatua

5   Whitelock, Van der Merwe (?)

  4   Etzebeth

  3   All problematic

  2   Du Plessis, Strauss

1   Beast, Corbisiero (?) - the latter had a very few recent games

Some players had very few games/series to judge the upcoming younger players and some have shown real talent in parts of the games - but nothing in others.    Some for instance looks good in attack and produce nothing in defence - some are penalty machines because they try to get the better of opposition by illegal means, etc.

Well as long as we are doing the history thing......here is Peeper selecting Eben Etzebeth and Alberts for the world team......hahaha. He also selected Piutau, the Bus, the Quaalude, Old King Cole and Ben Smith at centre. And of course Dave is selecting JJ.

This was November 2013, at the close of the test season. Cooper and Folau had very patchy to poor tests. Duane was playing his best rugby, arguably better than Read that year.
