Super Rugby set to expand to 17

A new Super Rugby model has been agreed at a SANZAR meeting in Sydney on Thursday to expand the tournament to 17 sides.

According to a statement released by SANZAR, a sixth South African team - most likely to be the Kings - will be included along with a team from Argentina.

The new structure requires approval from the Unions of each country but would mean that Argentina are included in the tournament for the first time, with South Africa having more teams in the competition than Australia and New Zealand.

"A scheduled meeting of SANZAR's Executive Committee took place in Sydney on Thursday where the future of Super Rugby was among the agenda items," read a statement.

"Today's meeting was another important step in deciding the future of Super Rugby," said SANZAR CEO Greg Peters.

"Encouraging progress was made and we now have a preferred model that involves six teams from South Africa and a new team from Argentina.

"The model will now be taken to the National Unions for approval before SANZAR presents its final position to broadcasters and fans in due course."

What a joke! SA haven't got the depth to field 5 competitive teams let alone 6!

Having occupied the bottom spot in Super Rugby regularly since it's inception, what makes the SARFU think things will improve by further spreading it's meagre supply of talented players?

Looks like there will be 2 Saffa teams now holding up the foot of the table and battling it out with the Argie team.

Bring back Super 12!!

It is becoming the "crap 17", instead of the Super.

I read that some SARU execs were touting a comp with EIGHT SA teams in two conferences with NZ and Oz to play in their own conference thus ensuring at least one SA team in a "Superbowl" style final ,if that were to happen I would just as well watch the ITM .Ridiculous ....

I don't see how this will work, it was initial meant for the best teams from each country to play in Super 10. Now we are super 17!!! What next? We will just end up having longer seasons and less attractive games. Bring back the super 12 format with the official league starting at the end of March.
Each country can only submit 4 teams. But to ensure the quality of the competition remains I would even go one step further. Only the top 3 finishing teams from each country gets automatic league qualification. the rest will have to go into a play-off pool at the start of each season. Play a round robin in a neutral venue where by only the top 3 teams go through, regardless of which country they come from.
So if I had to take last season then the teams that would have to compete would be Stormers, Lions, Kings, Highlanders, Force, rebels, Hurricanes and Blues, throw in a Argentinian team or two and you end up with 9 teams that will have to play over a 9 week period to qualify, starting now . Teams that do not go through can loan out their best players to other teams.

Rugby Union is run by corrupt, greedy idiots. The only question is whether or not they are worse than FIFA.
