38 year old Mayweather remains the best boxer on the planet

Now he ties Rocky Marciano's undefeated string put together 60 years ago. Got to watch out for these 38 year olds. The data just keeps flowing in ... 40 is the new 30.

 Actually Bernard Hopkins at 48 is the oldest..George next. Third oldest is South Africa's  Sugar Boy Malinga at 42.

 Yep, I am sure Mayweather's wife can vouch form his boxing skills.

The difference between Marciano and Mayweather is that Rocky Marciano was a gentleman.

 
And to add to that, Marciano knocked 43 of his 49 opponents out.

He could send you to lala-land with either hand ... and only needed to land once to do it ... unlike Ali who needed accumulative punches on the button to drop you.

Make no mistake, Mayweather is an amazing fighter ... but a Rocky Marciano he is not.

I rate Stanely Ketchel, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jake LaMotta, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran and Tommy Hurns above Mayweather.

The top 5 heavyweights of all time are Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano and some like to throw Ali into the mix, but personally I much prefer the vicious punching power of Mike Tyson.

Rocky Marciano is my opinion is the greatest of them all.

 This story about aging boxers, tennis players and what not is a sickening reflection on the starter who is using it as a motivation for his support of Matfield and the other older players.  He does not realise that performance - not age - is the key to winning in sport.
The people he quotes are always top[s in performance - despite their age - but the rugby players he supports is just not up to standard anymore.   However, most of the older sportsmen he quoted religiously on this site are NOT playing rugby and every code of sport is different and set different requirements.
I agree with you about Rocky Marciano - he was a real fighter and a top[ stuylish bocer as well.      

I have a lot of respect for Mayweather's boxing ability, the man is a genius in the ring, even at his current age, but there is one thing that separates other champions from him and defines them as much better than Mayweather in my eyes, and a lot of others.
The other champions fought whoever was put in front of them, in their prime or not, and were not concerned with losing the "0"
Mayweather has carefully personally selected who he fights over the last few years of his career, where in fact, he should have been instructed who to fight, but he brings too much money to Vegas for that to happen.

Of course this latest rehydrating issue for the Pacman fight has cast a huge shadow on Mayweather at the moment and put into question what really transpired before the fight.

Moz... so many people call Mayweather a runner, and he is, but as they say, the finer art in boxing is to hit and not be hit in return, which, with Mayweather's defensive expertise, he does.
Sugar Ray Leonard was fantastic to watch.  So too were Hearns, Hagler and Duran... proper physical all out wars.  They just wanted the fights.... the money was important but I always got the feeling that the fighter they fought at the time meant more to them personally than the money, as they wanted... demanded.... to know who was best at that time back then.
Mayweather has ducked far too many skilled fighters that were in their prime, the above mentioned names didn't.  
Mayweather holds nothing compared to Sugar Ray Robinson for instance, besides the fact he earned more money during his career.  Robinson fought 14 times in his last year alone, it took Mayweather to do this in his last 9 years, and Robinson knocked out 61 more fighters than Mayweather has even fought.
In Mayweather's own eyes, he is the best ever, TBE, and whilst I rate him very very highly, he does not make my top 15 of all time.

 The Ali era was loaded with great boxers, anyone of Foreman, Norton, Frazier were champions in their own right , frankly most of whom Tyson fought were Bum fighters, he even got knocked out by one of them...Buster Douglas ...and when he copped some decent opposition he took to nibbling their ears... what kind of champion is that?! Pound for pound the greatest boxer in my opinion was Sugar Ray Robinson... he was emulated by Sugar Ray Leonard and Ali....that's telling us something.

It's difficult to find a better top 10 than this, although I could maybe swop a few myself for other names , but in general, this is an awesome list

That's an interesting list you have there DA.

If we're talking of the greatest pound for pound boxers of all time then there's no way I'd include Holmes in the mix ... nor Holyfield for that matter.

There's no mention of Marciano, Louis, Dempsey, Johnson, Ketchel or even the likes of Bob Foster who was an unbelievable Light Heavy Weight.

Guys like Victor Galendez, Randy Turpin, Tony Zale, Jake La Motta, Rocky Graziano, Golovkin, Moseley, Ezzard Charles, Lennox Lewis as well as Mike Tyson in my opinion were far superior to Holmes and Holyfield at their best.

We're talking about a Tyson in his prime ... during the time when Constantine "Cus" D'Amato was still alive.

Mike was hit very hard by his death and went south rapidly after that.

In all my life I have never seen anyone with such punching power. Perhaps the only one who'd come close would have been Stanley Ketchel. I saw some brilliant footage of this amazing middleweight dropping Jack Johnson who was the heavy weight champ at the time way back then.

To me a boxer needs to have a punch. Not necessarily as vicious as Tyson's or Marciano but something decent.

Leonard was a superb craftsman. He didn't have the best punch but it was good enough to make his opponent respect him.

Tommy "Hitman" Hearns was my favourite during that era and what an era it was.

Haven't seen anything that could come close to that period in boxing. A special time.

Name your all time best individual boxer.
As I said earlier, I could easily swop those names for a few others, so it's not cast in stone.  As for Evander Holyfield, I watched most of his fights, and if one reads his accomplishments, he did amazing things from Cruiser to Heavy that had never been done before his time, and there were many greats before him.
I agree, Tyson went off the rails after Cus died, Mike idolized him and it affected him immensely.
Lennox is also one of my all time best ever favourites, and one of the few, if not only, heavyweights to avenge all his losses.  
Lennox told me once that his time in South Africa was one of the best times of his life, even though he lost to Rahman in that fight.
Would have really enjoyed seeing Mayweather take on Golovkin, would be interesting.
I doubt anything could match that era now, you have these tall massive heavyweights at 6'8 or 6'9, and some can box, but others are a waste.
Keen to see Wilder against Klitschko, or Anthony Joshua, and I think Fury is going to sleep early against Vlad.

Lewis  was very underrated, possibly because in the States British boxers were always viewed as having a glass chins.
