Yes pleased to see Roger win but in fairness, his opponent was playing with an injured.
I doubt if the guy would have won as Roger is playing magnificent tennis......but credit to him for persevering.
Yes at 35 you can still play tennis with the top players but not rugby, unfortunately, we Saffers have found out.

McEnroe feels Roger is playing better than ever, and I have to agree. He now comes over his backhand on deep balls he used to chip. He could be winning the US Open at 36 in two months, although that tournament on hard courts on and in humid conditions tends to be a bit more of an endurance test.

He didn't chip in the earlier part of his career. He lost his backhand for a few year, got a racquet with a larger head and got his backhand back. He is an amazing player.

Congratulations to Federer - he really deserve the win.
Just a question why did you not congratulate him and carry on only about his age? I am su re if Federer saw about how you refer to his age only he will be affronted.
Please note that sportsmen should be evaluated on PERFORMANCE and not on AGE, You seem to think otherwise.

He would primarily hit the slice off his backhand when he was a younger player....which is why the Nadal hevily topped forehand into the Fed backhand dominated their contests. He hardly ever used the topspin backhand for service returns....he does now.
17 Jul 2017, 07:55#7
Nonsense ... Federer has been hitting top spin backhands for an age now.
It's not a recent development.
It's not the 35 year old man that won Wimbledon ... it's Roger Federer that won it.
17 Jul 2017, 08:31#8
Yeah, he also won Wimbledon at 21. Moz, your obsession with age is tiring. For every "old" player that wins something, there are ten spring chickens winning something else. Also, Federer was gifted this tournament because all the top seeds were already removed by others or injury. Lastly, Federer is a special case because he is in a league of his own. His level of play is so high, that even when reduced by age, he is still as good as the top 5 in the sport.
That said, well done to him in cementing his place as probably the best tennis player ever. I like him and find h im to be a great ambassador for the sport.
17 Jul 2017, 09:24#11
At one stage there was an argument that anybody who is approaching or has reached 30 was over the wall and stuffed. Basically almost on Zimmer frames. That, IIRC, is what triggered this whole age thing.

Federer has always sliced but in his best years he could hit the top spin back hand and in fact had the best back hand in the world. He then stopped hitting the topspin back hand relying almost entirely on slice and chipped return. It was in this period he did not do as well as usual.Last year we began to see the top spin back hand return when Federer used as larger racquet head. His backhand today is back to what it was and hence the results. Federer will regret not having sorted out this problem earlier if he has any regret regarding his remarkable career.

The discussion was about the contact sport of rugby - not tennis. In any event Federer is a special case in tennis. So I would rather keep away from this obsession about the age of sportsmen. Mozart has an obsession about older rugby players - especially when Meyer was the coach. Madness seems to be effecting some of his minions as well.
17 Jul 2017, 13:40#15
Bollocks Beandip.
Perhaps you should stay away from tennis as well as rugby. You are undoubtedly confused about both sports.
Federer has dazzled us with his top spin back hand for years now. Don't blame us if you've onLy noticed it for the first time last year. He has every shot in the book and he uses them all brilliantly.
LOL!!!
Those noekie rations are taking it's toll.

Federer is a statistical anomaly. He is like Kelly Slater in surfing.
Kelly Slater is the youngest and oldest world champion ever. He proves and disproves both arguments about age.
Was this age, or just a sportsman that is 20% better than everyone else- and was fortunate to never pick up serious injuries during his career.
A rugby player like Christian Cullen was the best-attacking player ever. Then he got one knee injury at 24 years of age, and he was no longer international standard. He lost his pace and step off the mark.
Sometimes injury catches up faster than age- especially for players at the top of the game from a young age.
In rugby, the statistical average is that players will peak during their 20's, and decline in the 30's. But this can be a rigid and dogmatic viewpoint as it does not always apply in all cases.

You guys are clueless:
'All together this tells us that Federer has been hitting harder and flatter on the backhand against Nadal in 2017 than he had in their head-to-head in the past 5 years. But how?
..
One explanation is that Federer has gone away from the defensive slice by stepping in and taking the backhand earlier. Stats from the Tennis Abstract support this conclusion. If we compare the 2014 Australian Open semifinal to the Indian Wells Round of 16 match, the frequency of Federer’s backhand slice is down 50%.
..
Obviously the benefits of this more aggressive strategy weren’t unknown to Federer 3 years ago. It just seems to have taken some time to put it into execution. Whether we can attribute the change to the addition of Ivan Ljubicic, the switch to the bigger racquet, an increasingly relaxed game perspective, or something else is still a matter of conjecture'
....
Wake up or don't comment if you have no clue what you are talking about.

Bloo another shi.tty little attack from you. But as usual you miss the point. It's not an 'obsession with age'....it's an attempt to demonstrate age doesn't matter until it shows it's effects. And increasingly for many sportsmen that point is shifting later, which is a good thing. Apparently totally missed in Pamplona by mongs like you.
17 Jul 2017, 17:27#20
Rubbish!!!
It's just another fabrication coming from the fool with the "old age" chip on his shoulder.
As usual he's doing his best to sound all "clued up" ... much like the time he insisted on giving us all the "counter ruck egg laying 101" lecture ... and we all know how that turned out ... LOL!!
Federer plays the shot he thinks is best suited as a response to the one received. He mixes it up. It's what makes him so special. He has every shot in the book and so selects accordingly.
His top spin backhand is an effective weapon ... so is his backhand slice. Both are beautifully executed and he uses each every match as it suits him.
To say that he's suddenly a much better player because of a single tennis shot is about as absurd as it comes ...
"Wake up or don't comment if you have no clue what you are talking about." ... one would think you'd have taken your own advice ages ago, old man ... and yet here you are ... still spouting the same old horsesh!t you've been spouting the last 5 years.
17 Jul 2017, 17:42#21
Of course age is an obsession with you. It has been for a few years now.
You've tried your best to show how an old rugby player can compete with the youngsters ... but sadly that backfired badly ... and so we're onto other sport desciplines now ... till they crash and burn.
Venus was just another attempt to vindicate the elderly . How did that work out for you, Chip??
BlueBok has it spot on.
If you weren't obsessed with your own old age we wouldn't see your constant references to the aged doing well against the young.
You have an issue with getting older, Chip. You've seen that you can no longer do what you used to ... but instead of accepting it as fact, you're trying to sell us another Mozart whopper.
Is that why you're going to all these concerts now? To show all the youngsters how youthful and hip you are?
Mutton dressed as lamb.
Haaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaaaaaa ... pathetic.

No age doesn't bother me yet, I'm still playing off an 8 handicap and knocking it past most 40 year olds. As for Venus, a 38 year old who got to the Wimbledon finals with an auto-immune disease proves my point perfectly...as does Feds win in Oz/Nadals runner up there and voctory in Paris. So far of the 6 major tennis titles this year ....4 have been won by 30 plus players. Two by Fed at 36, one by Serena at 35 and one by Nadal at 31.
...
Case closed.

Age maniac at it again, you have yet to congratulate Federer on his performance = it is not his birthday and not his age that counts. Case closed.
The age story is only raised by Mozart - everybody else said in the past that age is not a factor when it comes to sport. The norm is not age at all. Mozart's mania on the issue started with Meyers mania to select non-performers based on reputation. Mozart defended Meyer all out and is still carrying on about it.

How many threads have you started pointing out some 30+ athlete that has achieved something? Lots....you know...like someone obsessed with age! Ankle biter my butt, more like got you by the throat.
18 Jul 2017, 07:55#28
Lastly, I'd also like to point out that I don't give a rats arse about age. If a player is good enough, he should play, regardless of how old he is. So please don't assume to know my stand point on the matter.
18 Jul 2017, 09:08#29
Wow ... Old Chip is certainly hot under the collar. His frail old heart is pumping blood at a hell of a rate. Perhaps he should sit down a spell ... gather himself.
LOL!!
Ummm ... Roger is 35 years old ... not 36. If you're going to promote the elderly try at least to get their ages right, Chip!!
As for Venus ... she's just turned 37. Look it up. We have the technology ... use it ... it should help you with your "facts" ...
And ... umm ... Raffa Nadal ... he's also just turned 31 in June. He hasn't won a major yet at the age of 31.
It's always an exaggeration with you, Chip. Twisted facts. One bull sh!t story followed by another.
If it's a player you don't like then you make him out to be worse than he really is. If it's a player you like ... like Frans Steyn ... then you make him out to be a god amongst men.
You exaggerate everything ... blow everything out of proportion. Whatever it takes to promote your argument. Everything you state as fact should be checked first. Chances are it's just another fabrication. Codswallop.
In short ... you are a liar.
8 handicap ?? Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaaaa!!! Yeah right? Just another exaggeration. I'm surprised you can even pick a putter up.
A frail 71 year old man "knocking it past most 40 year olds" ... ?? Is that with them standing up straight or on the floor laughing at your 30m drive attempt?
I guess all the boasting about your wonderful, successful life is also just another deluded exaggeration.
As I said ... Mutton dressed as Lamb
LOL!!

18 Jul 2017, 12:30#34
There are many good young tennis players. They are just not good enough.... yet.
18 Jul 2017, 13:21#36
Mills Raonic.
Gregor Dimitriv.
Alexander Zverev (20 years old and no 12 on the ATP rankings and the youngest in the top 20)
Kei Nishikori
Those are some on the seniors rankings. You have to bear in mind that you do not often find players that young at the top of the seniors rankings. That is because, unlike rugby, you cannot push youngsters onto the senior scenes and then hide them in a team. It is an individual sport where you have to swim or sink. There is no place to hide.
If you want me to name good up and coming youngsters I would have to quote you the top 10, or so, on the junior rankings. Given your track record with these kinds of lists, I would probably have to make that the top 200 on the juniors rankings.
