If the Boks were in a world cup right now with all players fit - my team starting team would include players that are effective at the breakdown- along with a few that are strong in other areas.

1. Beast/ Kitshoff

2. Bismark

if he is still international standard.

He is/was very effective at the breakdown- better than most loosies at the breakdown

Bongi on the bench or starting.

3. Coenie.

Very effective at the breakdown.

Backup or starting- Nykani- can scrum on both sides of the scrum. He can also have an effect at the breakdown

4. Eztebeth  - backup Snyman

5. Mostert-  effective at the breakdown

Steph Du Toit as backup- and can cover lots of positions

6.  Marx

He makes more steals than specialist fetchers. He is also mobile.

Kolisi as backup

7. Vermeulen- / a Donkey twin

effective at the breakdown. Also good in the lineout, so he should be able to cover the number7 position with ease- especially when compared to the likes of the donkey twins.

8. Whitely. Not great on the ground, but he is a good linking player between forwards and backs. Brings pace to the back row.

When you say "effective at the breakdown" ... what do you mean?

Beast does not play to the ground ... nor does Kitshoff, Nyakane, Etzebeth, Bongi, Coenie, Pieter Steff Du Toit, Mostert, Whiteley or Kolisi.

If they did then we wouldn't have so many issues at turning ball over to the opposition.

Is this just another attempt at vindicating the quota?

Thought you'd throw a few white faxes into the mix, huh?

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaaaa!!!

Good thing there's an edit button.

?"" few that are strong in other areas."  (e.g Speed in the back row, power in the front row etc)

@Cleancut, my guess is that you have never played rugby- or understood it when you did play in the 6t h team.

I see ... so it has nothing to do with the "breakdown" ...

It's just a list of your favourites you'd like in the Bok mix ... right?

Power up front? Nyakane? Really?? Perhaps if you turned the rugby ball into a cheeseburger ... he'd fight all comers off to get at it.

Bismarck? Oh please?? Done and dusted.

Bongi? Power?? Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaaa!!!

I see Kolisi the useless makes your side.

I have a question for you, Shark? What race are you? Your constant demand to see useless quotas in the mix leads me to believe that you are a black man.

A desperate black man at that ... who's only concern is getting the colour mix right.

Please confirm!!

SB

It would be much better to forget about Bismarck - he is over-the-hill and there is no poroof that he is not.

Marx is NOT a loosie and wanting to urn him into one is really funny.   Aside from being losing all perspective as to what Marx mean in the scrumming set-up - you will lose a major contributor to scrumming by moving him to loosie.

As to your other loosie selections they are flawed as well.  We need a real breakdown ball protection and recover amongst the loosies and I am not sure that Vermeulen will be useable in future.   All the players listed by you is just not suitable.

The benchmark specialists for breakdowns could be Pocock, Hooper, CJ Stander (who failed this weekend against Pocock) and Richie McCaw.

Jaco Kriel, Philip van der Walt (Sharks) and Lappies Labuschagne are IMHO the only true fetchers in SA, but none of them are anywhere close to the Springbok team.

It is my overwhelming opinion that if a team does not have a specialist fetcher, the same will happen like it did this weekend to us against England where we lost the turnover battle with 9 - 4.

Bismarck (as backup to Malcolm Marx) should not get close to the Bok squad ... far to much of a  magnet for penalties or yellow cards.

@clevermike you said Vermeulen would be too old- and he was probably the man of the series. He turns 32 later this year and will be available for the World Cup and some tests before this.He is reported to be playing in Japan this year, but other reports are that he may also play Super Rugby for the Bulls- next year.

If the Boks have to play in poor conditions there are numerous teams that should beat the current Bok breakdown. Even in good conditions, the ball retention is not great.
Marx has made more turnovers than most or all specialist fetchers, certainly vital ones in SuperRugby.
Bismarck may be too old but. maybe not. He will be 35 next year, but playing in France he may be well conditioned and not overplayed.Unfortunately, he is a penalty problem when he is out of form.
Bismarck has good breakdown skills and won many turnovers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujRGEDDhLFc

The trick for RWCsis to have players that are older (32+) but not too banged up & still with good skills. ABs look after such guys especially in the year before the RWC. So players like Bismarck & Vermeulen fit this description. Problem is Erasmus doesn’t control there workload. IMO Erasmus needs such players so he has to go after them.
