This is an exerpt from an article by Ryan Vrede, the same chap who was too pessimistic on Pollard. Still, he seems like a smart chap and produces opinions, not just warmed over news like most of our "reporters". In this case I couldn't agree more:

" There is an outside chance that coach Heyneke Meyer will look beyond Hougaard as his starting scrumhalf, although, having selected him in the match 23 for all the tournament's Tests thus far, it's hard to see this happening. It bears discussing nonetheless, and there are strong and ever-growing calls for the Sharks' Cobus Reinach to be granted an opportunity.

Reinach was consistently good in the Sharks' Super Rugby campaign, but failed to impose himself in their matches against the tournament's elite teams like he would against lesser ones. This raised some concerns because it gives you insight into the mental constitution of the player. In Reinach's case, I'm not convinced he has the mettle to be considered the answer for the Springboks in the position.

But all eyes should be trained on Hougaard when the Springboks resume in a fortnight. Meyer has some time to work with Hougaard one-on-one without the pressure of a match on a Saturday and this will undoubtedly benefit him. Whether that translates into Hougaard being able to deliver the level of performance that contributes to a Springbok victory against the Wallabies at Newlands remains to be seen.

Now in his sixth year as a professional (in which period he has mostly been a run-on starter), Hougaard's shortcomings can no longer be written off as those of a rookie, and he can't be accommodated in Springbok squads on the basis of what the selectors believe his potential to be. My position is that he would be far better deployed as a winger, but it appears that option is off the table.

In light of this, it's time for Hougaard, as a scrumhalf, to shape up or ship out."

Wish I'd seen some of Reinach, but I was in Super Rugby hibernation this year. Some good points by Ryan, I agree with his take on "Hoggard". The Boks deserve better than what we currently have at scrumhalf. I just don't see a clear leader in the upcoming pack.

Reinach is another Hougaard. He is good with the ball in hand, but his kicking is average and his passing is ok, but not great.

Faf De Klerk looked the best this year.

I tend to agree Faf looked terrific. But then he couldn't seem to keep his Lions place. I never understood why. But then I never understood why van Zyl as an aspirant Bok scrummie buried himself behind Hougaard at the Bools. We seem intent to disrupt our scrummie talent.

According to the article Reinach failed to shape up against the Crusaders - .  In the round robin match he scored a try and in the semi-final he was by far the ebst scrummie in boith sides - so he did not shape up.  Against the Waratahs - he did not play because of injury  - so the writer has been sucking coke about non-performance against top teams.   When will you stop quoating inaccurate reportds from some rugby writers?
So you could not agree more - but based on what - your falsified match descriptions or what?

... and what about Sarel Pretorius?

Faf had the benefit of a well performing pack of forwards in front of him ... and this helps a lot in his own performance.

I had the impression that Meyer had decided on Fourie du Preez right from the start and all the other scrummies were there just  to fill the gap while Fourie was not available.

Sarel would certainly be much crisper than Hougaard. Kinda like the Willie Le Roux of scrummies....many don't take him seriously. Willie overcame that bias.

Love to see Faff in the mix.

It'll never happen though.

Du Preez is his man for the world cup.

Fafk Deklerk must have done something like violate team conduct or had an affair with Ackermans wife because he was in top form before he was dropped to the bench.
He is in the mould of a classic scrum half.  Nippy around the base of the scrum with a fast slick pass and good kicking game.
Hougaard, Reinach and Sarel Pretorius are like half wingers and half scrumhalfs. Great rugby players, but average scrumhalfs

Its simple Meyer will be of no benefit to Hougaard as Meyer likes a kicking scrumhalf. There is no way conservative Meyer will ever give Hougaard the freedom to play his natural game.

Hougaard is our be option at 9 but only under a proper coach.

Hougaard is NOT a wing just like Frans is not a 10

In the article Ryan mentioned Reinach failed to impose himself and is not convinced he has the mettle to be the answer in that position but he didn't give any specific facts in reference to why he failed to impose himself during the matches. I disagree on his view mainly because there is a good source that indicates Reinach has been way ahead the others based on his super 15 performances, in comparison with Hougaard there is slight difference of mentality which you could easily notice but Reinach has played brilliant rugby throughout the super 15 helping his Sharks team to the playoffs with tries, whereas Hougaard hasn't played more superior and hasn't done all that much for the Bulls.

The territory kicking which is used in our game by a scrum half may not suit Reinach but it is also fair to say it doesn't suit Hougaard either because the kicks doesn't put any pressure on the opposition nor does it go over the touch line the majority of the time. Aaron Smith and TJ Perenara are not the greatest scrum half kickers either if you know their approach you would know but they can still be effective at a international level which is why there are selected, having said that I do think Springbok coaches are in higher regard with scrum half kickers compared to All black coaches which is unfortunate. In this case I think Reinach should start in the remaining matches to see what he can do, the springboks can not win the RC anyway so its worth experimenting on.

In the last matches of the SR season Reinach was IMO a little bit disappointing. He's a very good prospect, he's already one of the bests finding gaps and breaking lines but his decision making skills (distribution of the game and pace of the attack) have to be improved. Each time he was replaced by McLeod the change was evident, the team got pace and the attack was more fluid.
IMO McLeod was the most in form saffa scrummie during the SR. But with 30 yo (as S. Pretorius) I doubt he's the answer for the boks.

Meyer made a big mistake betting on du Preez, Pienaar and Hougaard and not developing more depth. I don't think any of them will reach the RWC, at least in form. Du Preez is expected to return on january 2015 and the japanese competition finishes on February so he's going to play very few matches before the RWC, some on february and then nothing till the RC on July.
Pienaar and Hougaard are now a liability.
He forgot about van Zyl and de Klerk. The first has IMO the best passing btwin the saffa scrummies and Lions' player is the most complete: good passing, kicking and decision making and very sharp finding gaps and breaking lines

He's also currently injured, he would've played for the Pumas in the Currie Cup otherwise.

Ho ugaard was terrible on Satuirday.  Onxce I looked at his game again - he was absolute BS - sad to say.   Every kick he launched can best be described as rubbish and he kicked away turmnover ball as well.   His one pass was so wide off the mark that the AB's picked it up and attacked.
He is the same as Morne Steybn - a diabolically poor reader od the game and a worse ball kicker and handler can hhardly be imagined.
We should be grateful Hougaard played for only 45 minutes - imagine the damage he would have done in 80 minutes.

To the top with this one - I want Dave to have a seizure about the latest comment.   He should also have a look at the thread Hougaard's dreaded box kicks.

Aside from the poor kicking issue from Hougaard - He was having the same problem Pienaar was having which was passing to the forwards at the wrong times on various occasions, that also ceases that the article and Mozart's perception is not precise.

Faf De Klerk is also another good scrum half but was he better than Cobus Reinach this year? No not by a close distance and there's not much of a point trying to look past the man, the only SA scrum half that can match Reinach's ability and mind-set is Sarel Pretorious who is a above average player, He is better than Faf De Klerk for sure.
