Why do the boks seldom use the advantage that they get during a game, to try and do something creative like a chip and chase, cross kick, chip over kick, or even a drop goal in some cases if within the range.

We do it sometimes, but in my opinion, nowhere near enough.

Some teams still often utilise this opportunity a lot, and the most notorious player, that I remember, to really milk this for years, was George Gregan of Australia, back in the day.

I just don't see us using this opportunity often enough, and if it doesn't work out and you fail to get any real advantage, the referee brings play back to where the infringement happened to start with anyway, so you lose nothing.

Any thoughts, or am I wrong in thinking this?

I just think we don't use it to it's full potential.

DA I have said before that inside the 22 with advantage we should mostly put a high ball into the in goal area at a location where we have players to contest it.....this could be a standard drill. Far more will come of this than toothless phase play against a stacked opposition.

100% correct Mozart, I completely agree

You stand to lose nothing, but 7 points to gain

We just don't utilise this option often enough

You may be on to something here DA. Our default option is a drop goal attempt or chip through. Moz, you are right, a well placed up and under dropping in the in goal area should basically boil down to a try 50% of the time.

We seem to be satisfied with the three points ... either a successful drop ... or if missed, the penalty. ... where as the thumper into their 22 could well be rewarded with a 5 pointer, perhaps even the full 7 points if converted.

It's so logical ... and yet ...

Perhaps they're afraid of the counter. What else can it be?

Blue, if I'm the coach of a team that is on the attack and the ref shouts penalty advantage and one of my players kicks the ball in any way shape or form, I'll bench that player for the next 5 games.

When you're in the opposition 22 and you get advantage, there is only one thing to do and that is to go for a try. That is the time to try the party pieces that you've practiced on the training ground or to throw a hallelujah pass or at least take on a defender, not kick it away and hope for a lucky bounce or a 50/50 aerial contest.

I cannot think of even one instance where a kick is justified when you're on attack with an advantage. The most frustrating of all is when the glory boy fly-half tries a drop kick because he's supposedly got a place kick opportunity anyway of he misses . . . so basically the team is settling for 3 points when there's a chance for 7.

If I could change one law in rugby it would be that any advantage is over the moment the ball is kicked. No waiting to see how it bounces or if it goes out of touch or anything like that, advantage over.

Be bold, use your backline and go for the try.

You miss the point....the kick which the NH teams use fairly regularly is designed to give you a better chance to score the try. I suggest looking at the Laumape try against the Lions, where Barrett playing under advantage immediately kicked to brother Jordie, who tapped it to Laumape for try.

Rooi, if the ball is kicked under advantage if no advantage is gained the penalty is still awarded. That's why some if the best fly halves execute kicks, e.g. to a player who is out wide. ABs do this often. No real risk & if player out wide is not properly marked or is good under the high ball you have a decent chance of getting a try.

"Rooi, if the ball is kicked under advantage if no advantage is gained the penalty is still awarded."
Yes, and more often than not you'll end up with 3 points instead of 7. The point I was making above.
I'm saying that advantage should be over as soon as the ball is kicked, not depending on how things work out. That's all. I'm not saying chip kicks in the opposition 22 should be outlawed . . . kick it away if you want, just don't expect to get a freebie place kick if your glory-boy flyhalf missed his drop kick or if his silly chip kick didn't work.
I've watched a lot of rugby in my time and I refuse to believe the chances of a try are the same if you chip kick or put up a high ball compared to if you pass it and keep the ball in hand. I suppose at the end of the day it depends on if you want to watch a poncy little flyhalf taking endless kicks at goal or if you want to see teams running in tries.

The answer is clear and plain: because SA playstyle (if it is to be called that way) is oriented toward destroying other teams'playmaking and hit them on the counter.
SA can not build their way to their opponent's22. It is beyond their tactical and strategical depth . They could include the most accurate kicker in the world, the talent will be spoilt in the lack of collective ability that is that absence of a team that is SA.

That player is not even born in SA. There are some other guys like him.

As bewildering as it might look, in order to fit their quota things, SA are reliant on people who were born outside of SA.

As it was mentioned by another poster, it 's been the same song for now 25 years. While other countries managed to get a few non white players out of a limited pool, SA has not managed to train one single decent non white player. Not a single one. You could have expected a few world standards in the mix. Nope, not even one good enough to be drafted by NH clubs, that are greedy on all kinds of players and hired regardless of the level.

The time for recknoning is over, people must see it as it is: SA will not train any non white quality players.

The solution was made clear many times: termination of SA rugby. The existence of rugby in SA is conditioned on its merit to be, SA rugby must deserve to be.

Remove the disguise of that quota story, let the selection be as people wish it and then end SA rugby when it has shown it does not deserve to be. Put the condition of merit on the existence of rugby in SA: 2 WCs out of 3 to be won, 8 out of 9 4Ns to be won.

So all the teams who resort to the in goal/cross kick haven't studied the stats....I guess is your "I have to be contrary" point. And then just to confuse the issue further you introduce your view that advantage should be over the moment the ball is kicked. LMAOFY!

Yes I fully agree with that, Redneck ... in fact I spoke of it a few months back.

Why the attacking team is allowed a do-over after they've ruined their opportunity with an aimless (hope it works out) kick is beyond me.

It's the proverbial "mulligans" ...

It allows them to be reckless and not suffer the consequences for their rash, stupid decisions.

That doesn't work for me at all.

I'm relieved to see my views are the complete opposite of rugby noobs like Dumb Ass and Moffie.

All we need now is Baboon-ou to advocate kicking the ball away when you have advantage and it'll be case closed.

Some strong stuff doing the rounds in your hood.

The sight of the SA show is enough by itself. Maybe you need strong stuff to avoid seeing it though.

You seem a bit surprised by this.

I'm certainly not..... with you being the sad pathetic person that we now all know you to be, I expected nothing less.
