 What a douchebag!

Keegan Daniel (Gallo Images) Related Links   Cape Town - Sharks captain Keegan Daniel is reportedly unhappy that there are too many Afrikaners involved in Sharks rugby.

The Beeld website reports that this statement, apparently made recently by the Sharks skipper, has upset the majority of the players.

It has led to a divide in the Sharks team, who have lost their last five Super Rugby games. They are currently languishing at 11th spot on the overall Super Rugby log.

Only six players out of the 22-man squad which lost 32-17 to the Reds in Brisbane last week are not Afrikaans. They are Daniel, Lwazi Mvovo, Patrick Lambie, Kyle Cooper, Odwa Ndungane and Monde Hadebe.

According to Beeld's sources, Daniel feels isolated leading the team, which apparently also has so-called "cliques" among its ranks.

Furthermore, there appears to be trouble in the Sharks boardroom as well, which led to a so-called "Operation Cleanout", with Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl being the first victim.

Van Zyl will be replaced by former Springbok captain John Smit, who will start his new role on July 1. Sharks coach John Plumtree and commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli are apparently the next targets.

Smit last week told a Sunday newspaper the toughest part of his new job will be to "make decisions about the future of people I know and had a close working relationship with in the past."

The Sharks are currently in Perth where they conclude their Australasian tour with a game against the Force on Friday (13:45 SA time).

Is this really necessary?   The Sharks for years have been raiding the free State for players from that area and obviously most of them are Afrikaans speaking.   That led to the present situation in the Sharks team.   It is certainly not necessary to form cliques in the team based on language issues and if those indeed exists it is totally unacceptable and could account for under-performance by the team as a whole..

There are Afrikaans-speaking players who did under-performed this year and some have been off injured and not played sufficent games to assess or are still on the injury list.

If they start weeding out Afrikaans-speaking players other franchises will welcome them with open arms.  However, I doubt it very much whether Smit would allow that one to happen and I also think that he would try and protect Plumtree - who had a horrific problem with injuries this year and also had to put up with a player like Francois Steyn - who did the minimum and did not live up to expectation.

Ja, it is called apart-hate, you hate the other oke who is apart from you, nê.  But this may just be the tip of the iceberg.  Normally when players argue it is because it is the culture of the bosses to allow these things.  But this coconut he is stupid if indeed he did say that because his career will suffer for it.  Lekka dom my broer.

Agree Mike, but this looks like cheap sensationalistic journalism. It surely is doubtful that Keegan would make a comment like this. Sounds to me the journ ou is having a go.

What is certain is that the sharks have played with huge spirit and the losses have been close despite a massive injury count. Sensational fightbacks are evidence of the spirit in the team. Sounds like twaddle to me but who knows anything is possible but from what an outsider can see its unlikley. Keegan does not strike one as being stupid. He has in fact an acute rugby brain for starters and make sense when he speaks.

Frankly I say hats of fto Plum and the Sharks for fighting on so well.

I tip the Sharks to win this week end.

Frankly I am more worried about the Stormers and wait to see who Allistair picks. We might see a big change on course dictated by change in playing personall. We shall see. Where is Groom these days?

trouble in paradise??? interesting comments from keegan daniel and his comments have hit media shores in our neck of the woods, so not quite as simple as fbaricated by the media, like that stupid saffa who beeo1 aka storminged famously quote to saying that SBW had agreed to a rematch with botha, only for bothas boxing promoter to say a day layer that no one in bothas or SBWs camp siad such a thing.

but getting of topic, no need to show evidence of brother beenos PDV like characteristics, its comon knowledge around here.
but what daniels did say just proves my point about the zero leadership the sharks have, what a stupid thing to say, and of course its bound to cause dissent amongst the ranks

dont know why theres a surprise amongst the so called cliques, there are cliques in every temas and groups, in the All Blacks, McCaw has mentioned often that the players he gets on well with the most are the older players like him who have been around a lot more, including mealamu, hore and woodcock.
in the brumbies when fotu auelua first signed up with them, he mentioned that adter intially meeting the team, he instantly bonded with leilafano and scott sio thanks to their natural samoan background.
when the wallabies camp got together, there was mention of a little tension as the only thing the brumbies and reds players did together was train, everything outisde of trianing was pretty much done amongst themselves.

daniels is at fault here, this isnt going to help the sharks one bit and if anyone thought their was the slightest chance of a sharks finals revival, then keegans comments have all but assured how much of a fantasy that is.

leadership in the sharks has been poor since smit left, and no one since has really stepped up and frabbed it by the horns.
i wonder what motivated daniels to speak out like he did, very brave of him even if i dont agree.

Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer

Cape Town - Sharks captain Keegan Daniel has deftly pooh-poohed reports that he is suspicious of an Afrikaans-dominated environment in the Super Rugby camp ... almost without saying anything.

The mobile, diminutive Springbok loose forward (@KeeganDaniel) took to Twitter from Australia this morning (in SA time terms), posting a photograph of him enjoying a convivial coffee with all-Afrikaans squad-mates Jannie du Plessis, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Franco van der Merwe.

The only words attached to the tweet, sent out to his 34 844 followers, were: “Just getting a quick lesson in Afrikaans before training. Your thoughts?”

There was a quick response from the heart of Afrikanerdom in Pretoria, where Bulls captain and another Bok team-mate Pierre Spies (@Pierrespies8) simply said: “Moooooi manne!” (Nice, men.)

The tweets appear to pour cold water over a report in Afrikaans newspaper Beeld, suggesting that the Sharks camp had been rocked by a statement from Daniel - he was not actually quoted in the story - that there were “too many Afrikaners involved in Sharks rugby”.

The piece said Daniel felt isolated as leader and was fearful of cliques in the squad.

It follows a difficult period for the Durban-based side, in which their hopes of making the 2013 playoffs have nose-dived with five defeats in succession, although they have arguably been disrupted by injuries more than any other side in the competition.

The Sharks play the Force in their final Australasian tour fixture in Perth on Friday (13:45 SA time).

Perhaps significantly, Daniel has been retained as skipper even though he is probably due a rotational break.

The side sees the return of prop Jannie du Plessis and flank Willem Alberts.

Seems like the gullible saSuE/aka StormingED is heading for  another mountain load of egg?

By all accounts it sounds like cheap sensationalism....not sure why anyone would believe the  first thing a newspaper sprouts.

Beeno

I had my doubts about this report.  Keegan is a deeply religious young gentleman and a born leader.   He is orginally from Humansdorp - a predominantly Afrikaans area in the Eastern Cape - and I cannot see him uttering that kind of talk.

There is apparently nothing correct about the story and I am delighted to hear that.

If he lied, that flippen reporter, then he must go to Kings Park and every Sharks player must kick him in die ballas.  What type of dog tells lies like that?  Sorry Keegan I doubted you because of some larnie reporter.  Cha my broer.
