Arno Botha (Gallo Images) Related Links Italy: We're not on holiday Terblanche: Boks by 15-20 Jake's Brumbies thrash Rebels Durban - Uncapped loose forward Arno Botha has been called into the Springbok starting team in the place of the injured Willem Alberts for Saturday’s Incoming Series opener against Italy at Kings Park in Durban. Kick-off is at 17:15. Botha’s place on the replacements bench goes to Marcell Coetzee, who played in all 12 Springbok Tests last year. Botha is the third uncapped player in the starting line-up, along with fullback Willie le Roux and scrumhalf Jano Vermaak. “It’s never ideal losing an experienced member of your squad the day before a Test and I feel for Willem, but I also have the utmost confidence in Arno and Marcell, who I rate as two of the most exciting young loose forwards in South Africa,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. Commenting on the injury, Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts said: “Alberts picked up an oblique abdominal strain earlier in the week and the decision was taken to withdraw him Saturday’s Test, but he should be ready for next week’s Test against Scotland in Nelspruit.” Damn Lappies should be on the bench instead of Coetzee

I would also have thought that the better bench selection would have been Labuschagne.  He is a much better player than Coetzee - but bank on it Meyer will alsways make a fool of himself.   I would NOT have selected Alberts in the first place - so his removal is in fact an improvement.

I would also have gone with Labbers. It will be interesting to see what Botha makes of the 7 position.

This appears to be a faster Bok pack and faster backline as well.

Alberts is no loss, shown no real form this season. Botha is a far superior player. We now just need to move on from Spies and Louw

Saffex

Alberts should never have been under consideration at all.   If Meyer could not see he was not matchfit in the last two games he played in - he must have been blind.    But then we know Meyer's capacity to prefer some dubious players that did nothing in Super 15 - yet makes his starting line up.

In the meantime I am delighted that Botha is in the startig line-up - he should have been there in the first instance.

Yeah I am a little irritated that Meyer has just resorted to selecting players he selected last year and has not rewarded form. Players like Jannie, Kruger, Alberts, Louw, Spies and Basson should not really have been in contention. Hell while Morne has had a better year, he is hardly a world beater with ball in hand. Why are we back to Morne starting at 10. Apart from Willie and JJ, Meyers selections are predictably conservative. Botha is in through default

alberts is no loss, but he did have value, but great to see arno botha get a shot.

i rate coetzee but it would have been nice to see lappies get rewarded too, end of the day Boks are spoilt for choice.
spies startign and coetzee on the bench makes sense in a way, cos they have an experienced player in spies to help balance the newbie factor and coetzee on the bench might only be in his 2nd year as a Bok, but is the most experienced of all the 2nd year garduates.

mornes selection is logical, every flyhalf in SA has been kak other then him.

i always thought the Boks are making huge mistakes selcting players who are based overseas and players who are leaving, but while the Boks might have some depth, the quality of that depth of SA based players is something i think i overrated big time. ive officially changed my position regarding this matter.
