Alister Coetzee still harbours Bok ambitions

Cape Town - Flanker Marcell Coetzee still harbours ambitions of playing for the SpringboksDDespite not being called up by Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus in 2018, Alister Coetzee told

Despite not being called up by Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus in 2018, Alister Coetzee told Netwerk24 he hasn’t given up hope of becoming the backline coach in next year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan.

“I think a lot of things can still happen before the World Cup - and I now have experience in Japan. But I believe Rassie knows what he wants and the current coaching team represents most of it,” Coetzee said.

The 57-year-old currently plies his trade in Japan, and is enjoying his rugby again after a torrid time struggling as the Springbok head coach.

He coached the last of his 23 Tests against Scotland in 2017 and he admits that he misses the set-up.

“I’ll always have a burning desire for the Springboks and it will motivate me to work harder and improve my coaching,” Coetzee added.

I can't see him being involved with the Boks ever again. That said, is Stick really a better backline expert than Coetzee? Rassie knows Coetzee very well. I still don't think it'll happen though.

AO

There is one comparison as to whether Coetzee is a better backline coach than Stick.   I think both are BS in backline coaching - but Coetzee is a proven failure - both on SR and test level and the jury is out to  an extent in the case of Stick,   I would consequently say in backline coaching St ick is very likely being better than Coetzee.

I have seen nothing to suggest that Stick is better. Our numbers this year are down in almost every category. Under Coetzee the backs were more productive, our entire attack was more  productive. Sure, our game was lopsided, as he abandoned the forwards as a platform for the backs, but it couldn't be more clear, he is a better attacking mind than Rassie or Stick.

AO BS flows again.   I have seen what Coetzee came up for years - he was clueless  in backline coaching in the 2007 WC - so Jones had to be brought in.  He was a total failure in the Stormers and WP game an he was clueless in 2016.

AO keep referring to 2017 - because factual statistical comparison is beyond his grasp.    How can he compare the second year of coaching of Coetzee to the first year of coaching of Erasmus - when there is no comparison figures for Erasmus available about his second year of coaching.

The only comparison which will be statistically sound will be iro 2015 and 2019 - being WC years.

What did Jones change? We were exactly the same team as we were before him. The real catalyst was Frans, before him, our campaign looked rocky. Where was the Jones factor when Samoa had us on the ropes? Or in the warmup games? Nowhere.

How can I compare? Because Rassie didn't take over the 2016 team, he took over the 2017 team . To omit an entire season of development is ignorant. I know why you loath the comparison, because it exposes your agenda. Rassie has seen a decline in attacking rugby. Show me where Rassie has improved the attack. You are quick to crow that Rassie has improved the team, but you won't compare the year he started to the last year of Coetzee? Do you actually believe what you are saying?

Do you actually believe the BS you spout?   Do you really believe Steyn ever was a better center than Jean de Villiers.

Dimness - look at the number of tries scored in comparison with what was achieved in 2016 and 2012?   Did the tries fell from heaven?

If you look at actual selection left out the BS selections of Coetzee.  Go position by position and indicates what players did Erasmus take over from Coetzee who never was consistent when it came to selections.  I ill just give you the backline selections and the loosies:-

Full back - Le Roux never played for Coetzee in 2017

Wings      - Mapimpi, Dyantyi and Nkosi never played under Coetzee

Center combinations - De Allende and Kriel played exactly one game as a combination under Coetzee in 2 years

Flyhalf    - neither Pollard nor Willemse ever played in the Coetzee years,

De Klerk was in and out at scrummie - more out than in.

Vermeulen did not play at all in 2017

None of the loosies regularly selected by Coetzee in 2017 was in the Erasmus team in 2018.  (eg Cassiem and Mohoje).

Advice - start thinking before you write BS,

Just think a bit when you write BS.   Erasmus had to bring in strings of players to start afresh after the disasters caused by Meyer and Coetzee could be eliminated.

Steyn sparked the Bok's WC campaign. That isn't an opinion, it isn't up for debate either. It's a fact. He did it twice.

What did Rassie inherit?

  1. Kitshoff: 21 caps under Coetzee.
  2. Marx: 14 caps under Coetzee.
  3. Wilco Louw: 5 caps under Coetzee.
  4. Am: 1 cap under Coetzee.
  5. Bongi: 14 caps under Coetzee.
  6. Mostert: 18 caps under Coetzee.
  7. Jantjies: 21 caps under Coetzee.
  8. Kriel: 18 caps under Coetzee.
  9. Damian: 15 caps under Coetzee.
  10. Kolisi: 15 caps under Coetzee.
  11. Malherbe: 5 caps under Coetzee.
  12. Willie: 41 caps under Meyer and Coetzee.
  13. Faf: 11 caps under Coetzee.
  14. Eben: 23 caps under Coetzee.
  15. Whiteley: 14 caps under Coetzee.
  16. Steph: 24 caps under Coetzee.
  17. Pollard: 6 tests under Coetzee (2017)
  18. Mapoe: 11 caps under Coetzee.
  19. F Louw: 14 caps under Coetzee.
  20. Beast: 22 caps under Coetzee.
So, of all the players Rassie has blooded Dyantyi, Nkosi, Mapimpi, André, RG Snyman have been the biggest contributors. The core of Rassie's team was established before him. I could probably find more references. Rassie has given alot of cheap caps out.

Go to who actually played in the RC in the backline and see where  your BS gets you.   My assessment was 100% correct when it came to came to actual backline and loosie selections,   You write total BS and expect me to accept it.   Take Willie for instance - Coetzee enver selected him as far as I remember.

How many tests are played per year?    There are in fact 28 tests per year.    14 and below indicates no regular selections.   And a lot of the caps were bench selections and did not feature regularly as well.

How the hell do you get to the well-established based on the actual selections in games provided.   Was the center combination well-established when they played together as a combination exactly once in two years. exactly once in two years .

I wonder why you think your BS streams all the times based on entire nonsense since in fact what you said did not happen.  .

Actually, the average is 13 tests a year. There has never been 28 tests in any Bok season. 10 tests is almost an entire season's worth of rugby. Even 6 is enough for an entire RC campaign. That's a lot of experience. So, when all is said and done, Rassie inherited alot of experience and a core group of players who were introduced by other coaches. Your narrative that he inherited "a mess" from Meyer is utterly ridiculous in the extreme. He has a much deeper pool of players than Meyer. He is benefitting from the experimentation of Coetzee too.

Meyer was all about the WC. His reputation depended on it.

Was his own doing as well. Had he not blamed so many losses leading up to the world cup on "building", "testing" or "preparing", then he may not have had to fall on his sword.

He did give young players a shot. But then when they were doing well, his ego took over and he tried to control them.

That mistake smacks of a few things. None of them positive.

Meyer and Coetzee are the only reason I hold out hope for Jessie Kriel. Guy suffered both of them and made it out with some respectability.

Pollard aside, the others that did are all forwards. Fuck me, those two twits dropped Willie and Faf.

Meyer was out of optins at the end. It was clear as day to any team that if you stood up to the snail paced rumble he thought was a strategy, then you'd beat the Boks.

He turned them into a one trick pony, and the trick wasn't so awesome.

Very little of what he did points to a guy that was thinking beyond the WC aside from winning it and retaining his job.

If hat were to h appen he could again "rebuild".

Are you stupid - I obviously refer to the two years Coetzee was coach and fact is I indicate the wrong number of tests over two years as 28 and not 24.   There are routinely 3 tests in June, 6 in the RC and 3 in November.

Your idea is deluded anyway,   When Cane took over frim McCaw he had 16 starting tests under his belt already,  Less than 10 tests can be regarded as a learning curve for test players.   It is only after that when players can be regarded as seasoned test players.

I gave you a near to full test starting line0up when Meyer took over as coach,  In his first year he did not start off with them - but soon enough went for Steenkamp, Van der Merwe and Bakkies Botha as well.    How come Meyer did brag before  the infamous Japan test in 2015  that the team to be fielded was the most experienced Springbok team ever if what you wrote is what actually happened in the Meyer era - inclusive of the situation in 2012.

You routinely make wild statements on site and when analyzed there are indications directly opposite to what actually happened,   so  my advice to you is to check facts before coming up with laughable stories.

Plum is a thinking person - read what he wroite above about your deluded dreams,
