Brodie Retallick's spectacular return to test rugby after a year out has been put on hold for at least a week but possibly more depending on the findings of a scan.

The big lock, who was quite brilliant in the two Bledisloe Cup tests, damaged his shoulder in the first minute of the clash against the Pumas in Nelson and the damage to his rotator cuff is significant enough to ensure he definitely won't play against the Springboks this week in Wellington.

It will take further exploration of his injury to determine how quickly he'll recover with All Blacks coach Steve Hansen suggesting the worst case is scenario is a six week layoff, which is why Blues lock Patrick Tuipulotu has been called up to join the squad.

The rising force that is Scott Barrett, who had another strong game in Nelson, will ensure the All Blacks can cope against South Africa without Retallick.

The bigger issue will be how well Retallick copes. The world's best lock didn't enjoy being out of test football for a year and having just made his way back to full fitness after breaking a bone his chest on the eve of the series against France, his mood might be a little dark if he's forced into another lengthy stint not playing.

If he is consigned to a six-week break, Retallick will miss the remainder of the Rugby Championship and be targeting a return for the third Bledisloe against Australia in Yokohama on October 27.

The prognosis for Ngani Laumape was more upbeat. He has a low grade strain in his knee and should be back within two or three weeks.

There won't be any need for midfield reinforcements as Ryan Crotty will be available this week and as long as an X-Ray confirms that the medics are right to believe Sonny Bill Williams has fully recovered from a shoulder injury he sustained against France back in June, then he too will be available to play South Africa.

Rieko Ioane, who damaged a hamstring in Sydney, is also back in the frame and the All Blacks, other than Retallick, are likely to unleash what most would consider to their top team against the Boks.

"There will be some changes obviously because we didn't pick our number one side last night if there is such a thing," said Hansen.

"I would imagine there will be changes. Some guys played well last night and put their hands up but it will just be a matter of when we do our selections that we have the right horses for the right courses."

As for what sort of course the Springboks represent, Hansen is in no doubt about that.

Despite the fact they slumped to a second consecutive loss against the Wallabies in Brisbane and have been well beaten in their last two visits to New Zealand, the Boks will tighten up and find a new level in Wellington.

That's always the way when they play the All Blacks – they put previous form behind them and deliver a performance that is at odds with their regular form.

There's that, and the fact that the All Blacks set out this year with the stated goal of driving their game to a higher standard.

A year out from the World Cup, they want to start embedding the gameplan to the extent that much of it flows unconsciously to enable the accuracy and intensity to increase.

There is the final incentive of knowing that a bonus point victory will seal a third consecutive Rugby Championship.

If they do, it will also be the third consecutive year they have been crowned champions with two games left to play, but Hansen was eager to play all that down and to reiterate that South Africa, with a touch of desperation about them, will demand the best out of the All Blacks.

"They will be a big challenge," he said. "They pride themselves on lifting their performance especially when they play us. They have lost two now so they will be pretty desperate and we will have to match that and be pretty desperate ourselves."

Sounds like Retallick will be out for 6 weeks, I doubt the scan will change that much. This will allow Tuipulotu to get more playing time which is a good thing. He's no where near the level of Retallick but needs to improve going into the World Cup. Scott Barrett just keeps improving so it will be good to see more of him.

Ioane could be back boys... Boks be wary. I recommend you reinforce your defense so I would start that bloke De Allande. SBW and Nonu would probably give the thumbs up on that one

We'll need more than a few AB injuries to have a chance in this game.

South Africa's biggest problem is defence. None of the SH sides have good enough defence. The SH is falling behind the NH.

Jaw's deep crisis has to touch all rugby folk....poor chap might be on the sidelines for 6 weeks. Perhaps he can bite through some steel cable as part of his therapy. And we are going to lose to these woosies!

Agreed Aug, I have been saying it for a while, the player selections etc are just a side note, our real issue is defense.

Rubbish!!

Select the right players and our defense improves considerably.

Select the right loose trio and suddenly we're winning the collision ... and contesting the breakdown as we should.

Selection is key in every aspect.

We have a very good defense coach in Nienaber. The issue doesn't lie with him ... it lies with the players that Rassie insists upon.
He is 8 tests down and he still doesn't know who his starting 15 is.  In fact his bench is also a puzzle to him.

Beast or Kitshoff ... Mostert or Du Toit  ... is Kolisi on the openside or the blindside? ... Is Flo the fetcher or is it Kolisi ... This week it's Jantjies, next week it's Pollard ... then it's De Allende and Am ... later it's De Allende and Kriel ... and even later it's Esterhuizen and Am.
Total confusion.
He doesn't know whether he's coming or going.

The All Blacks can field their 3rd stringers and still thrash us by 30 pts.

Defence in the Southern Hemisphere isn't good. Even New Zealand have exhibited shocking line integrity. Defence is so poor in the SH that if you watch New Zealand you'll even see a space of a meter or more between the ruck and the pillar defender.

Even when we were getting quick ball with few resources tied to the ruck, what was our attack? We had a lot of quick, clean ball in the past few tests. Just Wait until we go north, when we actually have to fight for possession.

BS,.... the AB defense is the best in the world alongside the Irish,.... the only 2 teams using a truly rushing defense
what aussies and boks are employing is nobody's guess,... but it's a disaster,... past weekend I watched the New Zealand NPC game Canterbury-Wellington and both teams were using a rushing defense more structured and better applied that anything seen from both the boks or wallies in the RC

New Zealand do not have the best defence in the world. Not even close. None of the SH teams would rank in the top 4 or 5.

ABF

It is vey difficult to discus anything with that guy.   He is so blinkered that any real rugby discussion is way beyond his capacity,

I'd rate England and Scotland better. New Zealand's key strength is their attack and ability to attain quick ball.

Lügnerin, this is how people have a discussion or debate. Notice the lack of insults. You should try it some time. Some people even say that it's more rewarding than insulting people!

Moz you know damn well the last person to ever be frightened by Itsabutt was the midwife .A fter she got over the shock of its hideous visage the poor woman then had to call in the jaws of life to extract its over sized melon.

They don't score as much because they don't have the same attack proficiency. New Zealand is unique to tier nations in the way they use their forwards. They select forwards with good handling and running ability. Look back to the IRB stats as early as 2001 and you'll see that they used their forwards more, and not merely as battering rams. It's how they create their width and the backs thrive off that platform. This is the strength of All Black rugby. However, throughout the SH, defence has lost its edge. Line integrity and speed isn't good enough. A long way from what it was in the past. This Change in philosophy since the ELVs is erring SH rugby. New Zealand stay the number one team in the world, but the NH is moving up and pushing the rest down. While SH rugby dies a slow death, the NH grows in strength.

France? You refer to defence, and then speak of tries scored by the defence. If we look at past results, the All Blacks score more freely against SH opponents in the majority of instances. If we review the All Black defence eve the past few tests though, we can observe the line integrity issues I have been talking about. Issues which were brought to light both by Australia and Argentina. Will the Boks do the same? Maybe. Its hard to know where Rassie is moving.

Re ad again ,France was the best defensive team in the last 6n but scored less than 2 tries per game .In the last 10 games vs NZ \England have scored 15 tries 1.5 per game vs 34 for NZ or 3.4 per game.

Just checked and it was 8 tries each over the 3 June tests for SA vs England .

So tell me where exactly does the NH have it over the SH as regards defence ?
