All Blacks Sevens coach Tietjens rues loss to South Africa

All Blacks Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens said mistakes at vital times cost the team their first Cup win on American soil since 2008 when they were downed by South Africa 14-7 in today’s final of the Las Vegas Sevens.

“We lacked accuracy at in the set place and that cost us, it cost us one try at least. The guys gave us their all, but we weren’t good enough, that’s all.”

The loss was a repeat of last year’s final and was the second tournament in a row that the All Blacks Sevens have been out-punched by the Blitzbokke. The loss has cost the All Blacks Sevens their lead in the IRB Sevens World Series after four rounds with South Africa now leading by one point from New Zealand.

Tietjens said the nine game suspension handed down to strapping Canterbury forward Sam Dickson for contact with the eye area of a Fijian player in their pool game rocked the team. “It was quite disruptive to the side as we only found out fifteen minutes before the quarter final against England.”

Dickson has been a regular member of the All Blacks Sevens having won selection last season. Tietjens said Dickson was “devastated. He couldn’t believe he had to go to the citing commissioner. I really feel for the guy. He has never been the aggressor. He couldn’t even recall the incident.”

He said after careful consideration the suspension would not be appealed, ruling Dickson out of the upcoming Wellington leg. He pointed out that even if an appeal shaved several games from the penalty, Dickson could still not play the full tournament and that was not ideal.

New Zealand now heads home to the next leg of the IRB Sevens World Series and will again face Fiji, who didn’t even qualify for the quarter finals in Las Vegas, pool play along with France and Spain.

Tietjens will name his starting 12 on Thursday and it may include one of the stars of the National Sevens Akira Ioane who was originally selected for Las Vegas, but was unable to obtain correct travel documents in time.

“Akira Ioane will be a contender – he is big and fast and had a really good Nationals,” said Tietjens.

The makeup of the Wellington team will be finalised after fitness tests on Tomasi Cama and Sherwin Stowers who missed Las Vegas through injury and Ben Lam who has recovered from a serious leg injury at the tail end of last season.

NZ in las vegas are a lot like that saying always a bridesmaid,,,

hope that ben lam, sherwin stowers and tomasi cama are all available for the wellington 7s, cos were going to need them in order to stop the blitzbok momentum.

another tough pool for NZ who again have fiji, but if all goes according to script, both NZ and fiji in particular shouid be able to advance to the quaterfinals.

the pool is shared with france and spain, and france can be considered on the smae level as australia who had an upset win over fiji in las vegas which saw them advance to the main quater finals, and fiji compete for the bowl.

a little worried about the wellington leg of the tour, as NZ arent as strong as they should be considering its in their backyard, they have won there twice in the last 5 years, very similar to the blitzboks and SA, but the blitzboks managed to win their home leg this year, so hopefully NZ can replicate the home advantage and win it.

GO NZ 7S!!!

Personally I think the AB Sevens has a slight problem - they do not have enough speedsters in the game - they try to win games by using their players to maximum capacity by clever passing  and play - but they lack real speed.   It was once again evident in the try of Kock in the Las Vegas match.  The defender should have tried to tackle  him - but he just did not have the speed to do that.

@mikey,

crazy talk bro, i dont think ur up to speed with the NZ 7s team if u think that speed is an issue.
s curry, p mickelson, raikabula, naholo and kaka who is the 2nd fastest in the 7s circut after americas isles, and all are known speedsters and all were starting against in the final.

the try to de kock was a result of mistake from kaka who i rate a lot, but his throw in the lineout was poor and thats one of the things IMO that tijens was referring too about set [lay errors.

as soon as kaka threw that lineout ball and it was possession of the ball was up for grabs, that blonde saffa whose name i cant remember was who made the try.
the blonde dude had mickelson rushing up on him and he tapped the ball to cecil afrika, who was running at full speed for the gap between his defender and ambrose who was also marking kok.

with kok running on the outside at full speed, afrika who is one of the 7s worlds best playmakers summed up the situation perfectly and did enough to put ambrose in two minds who hesitated for the slightest of moments, but was enough for afrika to pass a brilliant ball to de kok who was already on the outside of ambrose.

koks try had nothing to do with NZs lack of pace, it was NZ not doing the fundamentals and blitzboks taking all the correct options and executing it flawlessly.

IMO there was no one that would have stopped that try under all those circumstances.

 Mike, I dont think NZL have an issues with pace. Infact, if we stood both teams 3 fastest on the tryline and told them to race to the halfway line, we might lose overall.

That try we scored where Kyle Brown tapped back off a stray NZL lineout was a classic reason why possession is key in 7's. NZL were lying deeper, SA were slightly flatter as we were expecting to defend. The minute we won the ball, we had 4 guys at full pace against some pretty flat footed defenders as one of them rushed up and that creates holes that these athletes are well versed in exploiting. This what makes them the best 7's players in the world. The fact the NZL forced us to the corner was a positive thing on their part as from that situation, a simple switch play should see you under the posts.

It was a good game and at one stage NZL had completed 21 passes to our 0. I thought we were tickets then but we absorbed pressure well. By the start of the second half, SA had completed 43 passes to NZL's 23 so that just shows where the game was won and lost. We starved NZL of possession. When two teams as defensively sound as NZL and SA meet, its always gona take a moment of magic or individual brilliance. Hang onto the ball long enough and it has to come. Much easier to attack than defend as we all know.

Sorry to upset you.  Mickelson is a player that is faster than he appears to be - he is a long striding runner and I may have under-assessed his real speed.   I think there are one or two real speedsters in the AV Sevens - but on the whole the Blitzbokke is a much speedier side  than the AB side.   At least that much is implied by the commentators - who constantly refer to the speed issue of the SA players.

@mikey,

"Sorry to upset you."
i have no idea what i ur talking about. nothing anyone here has ever said has ever upset me, im an uchiha, an ice cold blogger, lolz, :oP

"I think there are one or two real speedsters in the AV Sevens - but on the whole the Blitzbokke is a much speedier side  than the AB side.   At least that much is implied by the commentators - who constantly refer to the speed issue of the SA players."
no offence to the saffa folks here, but i wouldnt be surprised if ive watched more sevens than any saffa individual here.
during that time, its the kenyans whose pace has been the most commented on by the commentators.

also wondering what commentators were seen on the broadcast to SA, cos the guys commenting on the broadcast i saw didnt constantly refer to the SA speedsters.

i would be interested in knowing as a fact if SA is a speedier side, it could be, but i wouldnt bet the house on it, especially as giles kaka recorded the second fastest time after that yank isles.
TBH though, it wouldnt surprise me if that was true though, but its not a straight out fact as u implied.

@foreverarizona,

" I dont think much...or ever about the all blacks...I think other teams should take this approach as well.That way their own ego will diminish."

the dodo bird didnt think much about what was on top of the food chain either, look how well that turned out.

teams cant help but think about the All Blacks, especially the number 2 Boks who have won one from their last 9 tests.

how can the Boks not think of the All Blacks knowing theyre on the cusp of winning 1 test from 10, 11 by 2014 RC/4nats end???

how can meyer not think about the All Blacks when he has a big fat 0% in his AB win column???

answer is u cant, All blacks are to much of a bench mark team, and those at the bottom are always mindful of the king of the jungle who rests on top of the rugby food chain.
