Andries Bekker played outstanding throughout his career for the Stormers and Springboks. He became an essential part of the team at lock and is highly experienced with over a 100 caps at Super XV. This year he's played great at the Japanese club Kobelco Steelers and I think some need to pay more attention to his performances.
I'm sure Meyer has already set his sights to opt for Matfeild and Etzebeth as the two lock paring but it would be rational to at least replace De Jager for Andries Bekker in the squad. I'd prefer Bekker over De Jager and Matfeild any day of the week.
Do you think there is any chance Bekker will return in the Springboks? To involve him in the next years world cup wouldn't be a bad idea whether he's starting or not.
This is a link that shows what Bekker has to offer. Great ball carrying, good defence and lineout takes.

Andries Bekker
Sorry I disagree. Some overseas players should be ignored but not ones that are capable of doing well for the springboks like Andries Bekker, Bryan Habana, Francios Louw. You don't wanna leave those players out do you?
What issues did Bekker have? Be specific.
I can't recall, it had something to do with personal issues tat affected his on field performances.
You got to leave these overseas players out at some point. Why not bite the bullet and develop the next guy?
Jammer, read once where he was on holiday in Cape Town .
Agreed Jerome ... Always have been a Bekker fan. His exclusion was a puzzle right from the start.
Meyer's been bitc-hing about not having 5 locks yet not once have I heard him mention Bekker's name.
Makes me think that there may be an issue between the two.
I too would have brought Bekker into the mix ... right from the start. Actually that's a no brainer!!
Etzebeth and Bekker was a very good lock paring, Bekker was arguably the best lock in the world at the time hence why the overseas clubs wanted him. He is playing superb at the Kobelco Steelers club if you look at his recent performances this year.
Biltongbek leaving out overseas players it will not improve the team whatsoever. Bryan Habana still got another 2 or 3 years in him and played good enough, to leave him out just because of him playing at a overseas club is absurd. There is no other winger that can replace him at the moment. Senatla still needs to be developed more.
Blob, I do not know why Bekker's not in the mix. It puzzles me.
I know Meyer has been on Matfield's case right from the start, trying his damndest to bring him back from retirement.
That to me was a clear enough sign that there's no room for anyone else concerning the 5 jersey. I thought Bekker may have taken the hint and left.
Jerome ... to be quite honest with you ... I don't like Lood at all. I don't regard him as anything special. Not at Provincial level and definitely not as a test player. He's immature as a person and too easily intimidated.
He's a 4 lock ... not a 5. Why Meyer tried to make him one is beyond me.
Willemse would have been my choice as lock cover with Bekker taking the starting 5 jersey.
Yes we know that.
Why was he never approached?
Fourie and Du Preez were? So were a host of others.
Leaving out overseas-based players may not help us win the next test match but it will send out a clear message to the promising youngster who's ready to go and make money in France or Japan but still considers himself good enough to play for the Springboks.
Go play overseas when your career is winding up and give your best years to your own country.
As far as I know Bekker signed a contrac t - similar to the previous one of Jacque Fourie - that excludes hin from playing internaionals. What it means is that he has excluded himself from playing in any internationals until 2015.
As to the rest of the present foreign club player sin the squad local players are vastly better than them. Here we have Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, JP Pietersen, Bakkies Botha and Gurthro Steenkamp.
Previous Springboks like Francois Steyn, Jacque Fourie and Zane Kirchner falls in the latter caegory as well.
Lood has been fine for the Boks and the criticism overly harsh. He MUST be kept in the squad. He can only get better. No more silly comments about Lood please oaks - wee cc especially - has the oak any clue at all!!
With the player exodus we have had and which will continue, if not accelerate, due to a worsening exchange rate, quotas re job placements, poor governemnt etc, not picking worthy overseas players would be a disasterous policy.
Biltongbek in the long term we may not have any players here to select from!!! Predictions are that the rand will continue to weaken. The amount to be earned is becoming irresistable to players. Watch out for what happens after the World Cup. What would happen if the pound was then worth say R24! Few years overseas and you are made for life. I would advise all SA players to seek their fortune overseas if they get the chance. Speaking as a CA of course!
So when looked at logically Meyer has not erred in not picking the unavailable Bekker (got it wee cc) and he is correct in principle to pick overseas players but his selections have been off the mark.
In the end we cannot on principle not pick star players/ best in position just because they are overseas.
It' s a very troublesome issue.
Draad expect Bekker along with a few others to be back here in Sa next yar to stake a claim to a world cup berth. The expect a big exodus following th e RWC.
I am not emotional at all mate, I like things in black and white, it is the grey areas that complicate things, you can discuss many issues that are impacted when overseas players play for SA.
You can question their commitment over money vs loyalty and pride, not that I have an issue if someone choses money.
You can discuss availability of players, not only for tests but preparation.
How do you measure these players against their peers at home?
How can a selection of Pienaar and Steyn be as potent as a combination of Hougaard and POllard or Reinach and Lambie? Players get to know each other, they get a feel for each other.
Then there is culture of South African rugby, something you live with every day.
Player management and conditioning, players playing in Europe are for example playing rugby 24/7 50 weeks a year.
Many, many, maaaaaaany issues
I would like to see Bekker return in 2015 RWC.
xx
Loyalty in this sport only extends for so long ... then it's onto the next guy.
I understand your reasoning and can see your logic of local players benefiting from it, however would still like to see our best running on and competing.
Some quality players are being ignored ... like Willemse for example. Chances of him EVER geting a shot is highly unlikely. I too would be tempted by the mighty Euro and Japanese Yen.
10 years from now and your done. Then you take your battered body and go seek an income elsewhere.
Strike while the iron is hot, I say .
What a fool...I didn't mention anything about Matfeild being superior over De Jager, I merely stated Bekker is a better option than Matfeild and De Jager for the reason being De Jager is not quite ready at test level.
The Japan league actually got some talented players with a lot of overseas players but obviously not as good as the other leagues. Whether Bekker is playing in the Japan league or not he is still likely to dominate and play his usual game.
You are the ignorant one out of the all that probably would prefer the low work rate player De Jager over another class lock.
Jerome, hence my edit you plank.
Lood low work rate are you fucking stupid?????????
You removed you're post I see lmao. Typical.
Yes you idiot as I read your post wrong, I thought you were stupid enough to tell us that Matfield was better than Lood, but given your rugby ignorance, I'm sure that is your call anyway.
You have to be one ignorant prick to not rate Lood, easily one of the best 3 locks in the whole S15 this year
Oh please ... Lood is useless.
Average club player at best.
Yes the same who was easley pushed into touch by Barrett!!
He could have a future as a Bok but he will need harden the fuck up.
Getting pushed out by a flyhalf shows much about how fragile he is with ball in hand.
Really you would expect a lock to stay in the field of play in that situation against a flyhalf.
Look... The player needs to harden up more. There are better options than De Jager. Bekker and others is the real deal!
So the fact that Lood spent the whole S15 making metres and S15 teams of the week has you clowns concluding he needs to man up.......wow.
And for the record Barrett was assisted in pushing Lood out, the same Barrett who ripped the ball off Matfield with ease
Typical from Saffex lying as usual.
Barrett was not assisted in pushing Lood out at all. In fact if you watch the repla y on a different angle you can clearly see for yourself Barrett made the tackle on his own. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbVkhBjE5gI
