Don Mc Lean, one of the very best...his songs will live on and on...music makers like him don't exist today...yes Dr Win, Vincent is a classic, American Pie I do not like....Empty Chairs is one of my favourites.

Now a days its all about doing it with your sister on the pavement.
Back then music was an art form. Talent was a prerequisite.
It didn't sound like two demons copulating like cats in an alley.
Artists like Cat Stevens, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, JJ Cale, David and David, Mike Batt, The Eagles, ACDC, Johnny Cash, Rodriquez, The Animals, Temptations, Traveling Wilburies, Dire Straites, Pink Floyd and even the older songs of the Bee Gees and yes Don McClean.
Things have changed.
Now we have to sift through the trash for anything special.
Guess I'm showing my age.

Hi Lara.
That must have been good. Never saw them live. Can only imagine what it must have been like.
Crazy about them.
The last live show I went to was the Rolling Stones easily 20 years back.
I would also love to see Pink Floyd in action.
Or even ACDC however I guess one would need hair to be a proper headbanger, huh?

Yup Dire Straits is a great live concert , Pink Floyd and Bob Marley were my two faves Pink Floyds Adelaide cocert was a strange one for me ,I was standing in the massive crowd at Thebarton Oval when out of the darkness my room mate from Randwick Barracks 6 months earlier [ he got booted for smoking dope ] strides out of the crowd and says " Oh there you are !" like he expected to see me there in that spot !Halfway through the concert he wandered off never to be seen again !A jumbo passing overhead had many confused thinking "Like wow how did they work that into the show ??" hahahaa.And no its not too late ....are you putting up a white flag ?!!!

There's some real good numbers mentioned here but there are 2 numbers that probably none of you have heard...by far my favourites as far as rock balads go...even Saffex will do his nut and I know Dr Win,Sas and Cloudy will approve.

You have me wrong. My favourite music has always been classical (eg Mozart, Beethoven, Tshaikovsky, Wagner, Verdi) and light classical (eg Offenbach, Strauss) - so maybe I am old-fashioned.
More recent artists I favoured are ABBA, the Beatles, and the 70's artists and music.
I also loved the four tenors - especially Pavarotti - with their performances at the Soccer WC's . Nessum Dorma is certainly one of the best ever songs when sung by Pavarotti.
I do like soul and country music - but it will not be enduring favourites with me.

I prefer Maria Callas singing in Tosca. Although I have to admit I prefer the Rolling Stones to Parsifal. Is that modern enough?

Old Maaik....I know you love classics so do I passionately...In fact classics are my favourites although I do really enjoy outstanding rock, balads and pop of the old ...not the total rubbish and absolute crap of today.
I am passionate about Tchaikovsky,Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, Bach and many of the masters...my greatest enjoyment was watching Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Beethoven's Ninth at the Bolshoi in Moscow,some years ago ( I think 13/14 years ago and Handels Messiah...Joan Sutherland,Kenneth Mc Kellar way back in London by Symphony Orchestra and chorus, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult way back when I was a child in the early sixties...my late mother was a lover of the classics...even though I was a kid it left me with a love of beautiful music.
I've also seen the Bee Gees,the Byrds, Chris De Burgh and many others in the flesh...I enjoy all good music. But it must have attributes with taste.
My diversification is so vast, it's unusual.

Fine with me Mozart ! life too short for old geezers like me ! I know that everyone has common ground , I actually dont mind Maria Callas who while not technically perfect bought her immense passion to her music like no other ,according to her bio she was a bit of a fire cracker too !CC is a Pink Floyd fan ,I wouldnt have picked that but there you go ! And I can vouch for the amazing performances they put up in Oz ,the sound was so massive and clear it went through your whole body from toes to nose !And YoYo Ma rocks the prelude to Bachs cello suite #1 !!!!Night moves is one of those desert island discs I reckon .

I agree, life is too short....done. I actually like opera singers with a bit of earthiness. I also like the bel canto singers like Kathleen Battle, who I met once in St Louis. She has magnificent high notes but falls short in lower register. Superb as all the famous names are, they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
