I rather think they are. It's now three years since the RWC. In terms of starters the only new players since 2011 will likely be Willie, de Allende and Lood. I'm assuming Etzebeth will come off the bench.
That's a small post RWC crop compared to 2006. And in 2010, the third cycle year, our 2007 team was still in their prime.
And if you look at those four players, only Willie and Etzebeth are incumbents. Loos has to prove himself against tough opposition and De Allende is a concept.
So we turn to our 2011 RWC team and Habana, JP, Jean, Morne, du Preez, Beast/ Steenkamp, Jannie, Victor and Louw are still the best in their positions.
The new crop...Serfontein, JJ, Taute, , Hougaard at scrummie, Lambie at flyhalf, Goosen, Jantjies, Coenie, Coetzee, Kruger etc etc.....have all not seized the ring. They have had lots of chances, but failed or played at a level which won't worry RC opponents.
We have locks coming through. I like Willemse ....Etzebeth is spectacular. But where are the new loosies, centers, props, wings? There are players coming through....but not great players. That's why the older chaps haven't been dislodged. Matfield has to be diminished, but he is still the best 5 lock by a mile. Same for Habana, same for Jean...same for Jannie.
Meyer must look back to 2005 and wish he had his chance then. The new youngsters are shadows of those great players.
