You dio not listen to discussions like Boots & All - obviously not. What Mallett and Skinstad said yesterday painted a very poor picture of SA performances in Super 15. One of the greatest weaknesses is running straight at the first defender - the top deficiency candidates being JJ Engelbrecht and Francois Steyn. No idea about how to play thinking rugby.
The difference between Steyn and Engelbrecht is that at least Engelbrecht has speed - something seriously lacking in Steyn.
You keep on saying he is the no 10 candidate - but I think after White looked at the match last Saturday again - he realised that Steyn at 10 is definitely not an option. He rather went with Swiel than try Steyn again in a position where accuracy in play is required.
You are correct about the thin talent spread - but you are wrong about Steyn even being in the picture - the only SA Center and flyhalf without even one line break and the only SA center who never scored a try. Goal kicking is not the only requirement for a player to be a candidate - there are other even more pressing needs as well.

everyone mentioned IMO is worthy of Bok consideration, but four players in particular who standout are de allende, potgeiter, van der walt and du plessiss.
of that fantastic four i mentioned, du plesiss has the same x factor which mady lady elizabeth such a household name.
what an impressive specimen that du plesiss is, opposition always struggle to take him down and thats scary as fudge, especially if l;ike me u subscribe to the theory that players in their early 20s have not fully reached their core strength, skill set.
when he becomes veteran with some realy rugby nous, hes going to produce performances which will make him a Bok incumbent easy.

I am sure that White is NOT comforted by Steyn's perfomances - either at 10 or 12. You constantly goes on about Engelbrecht's lack of penetration - but Steyn showed considerably less, but that does not seem to bother you at all. Is it because Steyn converted some long distance penalties?

In addition to the above -Jordaan could be useful. Kitshoff is very good but suffering in a lightweight pack with a lightweight hooker - ditto Malherbe. Wille Britz has been outstanding as well. Sithole but too early to assess. Watermeyer looks a good one.Willemse looks promising. Some of these guys need another year.

It may go over my head - but you obviously do not know about discussions on Boots & All and during match breaks by experts. They do not mention names - but illustrate weaknesses in playing. Their demonstrations always comes back to a few players who do th wrong things over and over again. Those few players include without fail the deficiencies Francois Steyn displays match after match.
So - Whoosh right over my head - goes whoosh over the heads of people like Naas Botha, Mallett and Skinstad as well. It must be wonderful to be as brilliant as you are or alternatively be living in a world of make-belief. I frankly believe it is the latter - not the former.
By the way the "subtleties" you refer to are not "subtleties" - Steyn got one MOM award for converting some long distance penalties = that whilst the rest of his game was a complete bugger-up. However, to be lead by journalists about how they see matches - raise a serious question by me about your ability to see what happens on the field of play and assess match performances yourself.

De Jong isn't a success, Lappies isn't playing poorly just not to the standard he set last year. He still wouldn't look out of place in a Bok squad.

You think that some players are successful - so lets look at your following quoted group:-
"Pans like Fransie at flyhalf, de Jongh at centre, Mvovo at fullback, Schalk at flank, Zeilinga, Alberts....all roaring successes."
Fransie ar Flyhalf
You and perhaps some journalists must be the only deadheads who think that Fransie is a roaring success. Because he has kicked five long range penalties does not make up for the fact that -
* he lost possession and gave away penalties 23 times in 7 matches;* he is the only player playing either at center of at flyhalf in any SA franchise that in the 7 games they played in'* every other frontline center playing in any of the SA franchises has at least scored one try - Steyn has scored zero tries;* Steyn has the worst tackle stats of any player playing at center or flyhalf for any franchise;* Steyn is seriously deficient in speed which is the basic reason for the deficiencies listed;* Steyn's passing game is inaccurate and aimless - that is bearing in mind that he does not pass 50% of balls passed to him - he ran straight at the first defender and that prevents any fluency in backline play.
If the above represents a "roaring success" then anybody making such a claim is really delusional. De Jongh
A fl;op on the 2012 EOYT - a defensive flop last year - made two line breaks and scored a try after being put in the clear by Grant. That was followed by 5 cases of losing possession of the ball, aimless kicking while in space - for which he was severely criticized by Skinstad. Very funny this one. One or two cases of good play is not career-defining - consistency is and De Jongh is anything but a consistent performer.
Schalk at Loose forward
He started off well - but then another injury. This guy has played about 5 matches in three years before hios latest injury 0 is that enough to call him a roaring success? Is Schalk always hurt?
Zekinga
As per normal with you any flyhalf that can kick at goal is a successful flyhalf. Zeilinga was in fact bog ordinary ar flyhalf - better than Steyn - but still very average. Roaring success - are you delusional?
The so-called flops are flops in your book 0 butr definitely not in fact - you are so prejudiced that you cannot make any real determination of player performances and then comes up with Bullshit. about players.

I'm not going to argue with a dead head. But say, did you ever wonder why you get it wrong so often? It's simple, you are too quick to condemn proven players and too quick to elevate perfectly ordinary players who do well at junior level. You are confused by effort, which tends to have its rewards till test level which demands skill and physical superiority.
But just in case you go hunting for the latter, it's a multivariate analysis.....not simply pace as spotted by Dave in JJ and by you in Jordaan. You need more. Even the prince of pace Habana brought vision and quick reflexes to augment his pace.
Frankly Oom I doubt you will ever get this right.

A dead head is somebody who believe what journalists write about players - and who cannot use his own eyes when it comes to player performances. Who are one-incident jerk that made a mess of assessments and who use stats when it fits his arguments and ignore them when it does not. Who condemns a player without ever seeing him play and write eulogies about failed performances.
A dead head is somebody who believes kicks at goal is all that is required from a flyhalf - who thinks that a few ball carries and a limited number of tackles is all that is required form a loosie - and who invent terms to denigrate players he does not like..
I never write up players without factual performance evaluation - not based on fairy tales like you do. When I mention a player is after I have really looked at his performances over a number of games and then still added that he needs to prove himself during a full series - not only in one or two matches.
So now the following:-
"But just in case you go hunting for the latter, it's a multivariate analysis.....not simply pace as spotted by Dave in JJ and by you in Jordaan. You need more. Even the prince of pace Habana brought vision and quick reflexes to augment his pace"
What vision does the Steyns and dead head players like Alberts brings to the table? The slow reflexes, wrong decisions and lack of pace of those three players are legendary. Quick reflexes - you really are delusional.

Forget about personal remarks. You have never been able to really decipher what Francois Steyn brings to the table other than his long distance conversion of penalties. His physique - which you emphasized all the time - why does that not produce anything like line breaks and improve his tackling? His reading of the game - does that result in seriously flawed decision making as continuously mentioned during discussions by experts?
Sorry to disappoint you - but unlike you I look at trends in performances. If a player over a number of games miss tackles regularly - I try and determine what causes the problem and why does it happen regularly. In for instance the case is with Steyn, the reason definitely is speed deficiency and resultant mistiming of tackles.
How do I know there is a speed deficiency? It is illustrated during games when he is just not quick enough anymore. Look again at the Harris try in the Reds game - where Harris ran past him without him not even attempting a tackle - look again at the incident on Saturday last week when Skosan ran past him.
Does the speed issue not come forth again in his dismal attacking performances? Does that not account for his lack of line breaks and even scoring of tries? It certainly does - he is brought down easily despite his physique with minimal territory gain by physically smaller players.
Has is never entered your mind that Steyn has serious problems with regard to reading of the game and consequential plays are concerned, Why would he repeatedly fail to see an overlap and then use skip passes to eliminate the overlap situation? Why would he not pass balls when the players outside of him has acres of space in front of them?
in 2012 Morne Steyn failed in his goal kicking - but he also produced his standard fair he always did in respect of other facets of play. That standard fair was his normal deficient performance in virtually all facets of flyhalf play. Morne went to France and despite all the protestations he is not the first choice flyhalf of Stade Francais? Why? Because they recognize his only asset is kicking at goal - nothing else.
It is only you who rate flyhalfs only as goal kickers - not anything else. How one-dimensional can you get? Mozart - you look at one incident in games and then builds a players career around that one incident and write message after message about that one incident. It just does not work out and normally results in failure of the player on higher level.

Well if you add all those names to the current squad that is a big pool of players.
Add Visser, SP Marais, Sithole, de Allende, Esterhuizen, Reinach, Kitshoff, Marcel v/d Merwe, Paul Willemse and Labascagne and the Boks are looking pretty in terms of depth.
We have more than enough to choose from in Willie, Taute, Visser, SP Marais, JP, Habana, de Jongh (wing), Mvovo, Jordaan, Hendricks, Rhule, JJ, Serfontein, Frans, Jean, de Allende, Sadie, Esterhuizen, Sithole, Frans Venter, Goosen, Lambie, Boshoff, Potgieter, Jantjies, Hougaard, du Preez, v/Zyl, Reinach, Faf, Beast, Kitshoff, Mellett, Nkayane, Jannie, Coenie, Malherbe, Marcel v/d Merwe, Kirsten, Bismark, Strauss, Chiliboy, Etzebeth, PSDT, Lood, Willemse, Jacques du Plessis, Lewies, Brussouw, Kolisi, Louw, Schalk, Alberts, Arno Botha, CJ Stander, Elstadt, Labascagne, Vermeulen, Coetzee, v/d Walt.
What we don't need is conservative Meyer selecting the likes of hasbees Fourie, Morne, Pienaar, Steenkamp, Bakkies and Matfield

Got to agree once again with Saf
We have so much depth and talent coming through.
Though the SXV results dont look great, we do have some great talent coming through.
If we think back 3 or 4 years ago, we hardly had a 10 to speak about.
Now though Boshoff isnt the final product, he along with Goosen and Lambie are players worth speaking about.
We could go through every position...
Like it or not (read cleverdike) we do have a great talent pool to work with.
Cheers

Unless you missed it completely - like is your case always - Taute had a very decent game on Saturday and may develop further if he keeps up improving. Maybe the public criticism had an effect and he is now trying very hard to perform better.

Saffex, CJ Stander is having a blinder this season for Munster! Got a MOTM in the Heineken cup recently, Bulls best come crawling to him because he's going to be a force to be reckoned with if he qualifies for Ireland!
