 The Australian press savaged the "woeful" Wallabies on Monday after England exposed their inadequacies on the first match of their European tour, with much of the criticism directed at coach Ewen McKenzie.

 

England came from behind to win 20-13 at Twickenham on Saturday as the Wallabies' bid for a tour "Grand Slam" toppled at the first hurdle.

Australia's rugby writers were in malevolent mood as the team chalked up their sixth defeat in eight games under new coach McKenzie.

 

"This was a loss to a developing English team with an erratically functioning lineout and faulty goalkicker, and unfamiliar combinations throughout -- yet the hosts were mildly miffed with the style of the win," The Sydney Morning Herald's Paul Cully said.

"That is an insight to how the Wallabies are really perceived despite flattery in the lead-up. There is blood in the water on this tour and every side in Europe knows it."

The Australian's Bret Harris said: "The dream is over. Australia, wake up!"

 

"The Wallabies' loss to England has not only ended their chance of winning the Grand Slam, but has continued their regression under new coach McKenzie, who now has a 20 percent winning record," he said.

 

"The Wallabies now have to pick up the pieces of a broken dream and find a way through the rest of what is shaping up as a very treacherous tour."

McKenzie replaced New Zealander Robbie Deans as Australia coach following the British and Irish Lions' 2-1 series win over the Wallabies in July. (Please come back Robbie - all is forgiven...)

 

Greg Growden, writing for the ESPNscrum website, said Australia could not look for scapegoats.

"The Wallabies had enough possession, enough time in important attacking positions, to get themselves out of the mire," Growden said.

"But they lacked the intelligence, the plan and the confidence to finish it off, just like any team that has lost the knack of winning. And when you are relying on players woefully out of form, nothing of value gets finished off.

 

"The Wallabies are masters of talking themselves up, but when the big moment arrives, you discover their talk is so, so cheap."

Australia play Italy next week before facing Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

the officials influence cant be ignored, but its hard to take seriously from the likes of mackenzie in the post match interview, as he cries ref every single test.

one thing about the aussie media is, the love it when austalian teams do well, but its a high for them when the lose, no surprises to see the media ripping the wallabies apart again, wonder if aussie media is run by kiwis and POMs, lolz.

i do agree that the wallabies talk themsleves up way too much though, media dosnet help matters, cos the higher they are raise, the more impact when they fall.
but the wallabies need to just STFU and do the job.
All Blacks dont talk themsleves up as much as the wallabies (fans do though, especially me, LMAO, ) and they have a record worhty of talking up, but the wallabies, jeebers, its like they will never learn.

Ewan now has a 25% win percentile. That's pretty bad. In fact, it's disgusting. Who is worse? Well, not many. Certainly a long way off from Straeuli's 52% and Dean's 58%. You can talk of officials all you want, but when you aren't doing the right things and you have bigger problems then it's not really a factor. Australia were not the better team on the field on Saturday and that IS the key point. Ewan has now blamed Deans and suggested he inherited a "broken machine", but then why does he have less than half of Dean's wins? You can't even say they've been competitive. Too much mouth, too little honesty and clout. The ARU essentially slit the throat of Wallaby rugby by betraying Jake. What a stupid thing to do. I predict the rest of the decade is going to be a dark time for Australia. I just don't see anything good happening right now, and Lynagh agrees with me.
