Aussies deserved to win the quarter-final

 Hi, I'm new to the forum. Hud Rickit, the name and I support the mighty Crusaders and the All Blacks. It was good to see another country bleat so loudly about the referee's performamnce in a World Cup. Agreed, it was Bryce Lawrence's worst referee-ing performance and that's saying something. But it's not what lost SA the game. Pocock was cheating and was alllowed to the the ref, right in front of their posts, yes, yes, I know. But what cost SA the game and a chance at the mighty All Blacks, was that you had SO MUCH possession but didn't know what to do with it. That comes down to not changing the style of rugby played since the 2007 cup. That, and keeping aging stars like John Smit on well past their used by date.

Bring on the Super 15.

Have to disagree(guess it won't be the last time either hahahaha) with your header. I was at that game and I bumped into an Ozzie afterwards, in his words Pocok's transgressions were embarrassing and our possession was nullified by his cheating. True, we held onto Smit for far too long, Bismark made a huge difference when he came on and I daresay Habana should also have been replaced a whole lot earlier.

The combination of an inept referree and the cheating Pocok plus an over the hill John Smit colluded to bring about the Bok's demise. The Boks would have been a tougher proposition for the AB's than the Wannabees.

A heary welcome rickity, but not an auspicous start!.

You may recall the Boks lost by one point. BL robbed them blind and had a fair competent ref been on the park we would have won comfortably by 20 odd points.

Whatever our failings we were by far the better side and only a disgusting display by nz ref of the year BL prevented a comprehensive Bok win. We played moe than enough rugby to beat an badly outclassed oz side.

Dont come with this rubbish that a ref can rob you blind but you must look to your own failings when in any event you lose bya point!!! That is absolutely illogical. We were mor ethan good enough on the dy t owin at a canter.

BL should be banned and there should have been an investigation. The abs were booted out of the previous wc because of one forward pass  - we had to endure far far more than that so don't even try t oequate the two situations. This was naked robbery. Then to make BL nz ref of the year after a display like that  - well the mind boggles at nz behaviour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Win at any cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A very curious stat is this. Duting the 2011 tri nations the abs got 1 yellow for every 43 penalties. OZ got 1 yellow for 7 every penalties and the Boks got 1 yellow for every 6 penalties. In the final we saw our Craig Joubert hand the wc to the out classed abs - so we are also at fault here. The stats I show clearly indicate both oz and SA  refs favour nz sides. What else can explain such an outrageous difference.

No the wc was a total farce and one nz should never have won. An average Fog side showed how they were ready for the taking. Get the Japies prevailed.  Bok would have given the abs a  hiding in final and the abs knew this. Well done BL nz ref of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

 I live in Queenswood - so it's Reds for me.  New here like hudrickit.  I don't want to say much at this stage, still trying to catch-up.  But I see some hatred and some really non-rugby nonsense.  Who gives Denny the right to call people names and then request them to participate, bit two faced Japie woh does not even live in his own counrty.

As for the game - cry all you want!  You play the game and there is an official who will officiate the game - We won fair and square.  To cry now is typical of losers. Lets debate RUGBY and leave the name calling and ref blaming out of it - it smacks of an ill upbringing if you ask me.

South Africa didn't know what to do with that possession? This seems to be the best anti-South Africans came conjour up. Simply put together a retort that is based on a rather limited perception that the Boks cannot play attacking rugby. Sadly that has been enough to deflect attention from what is clear indication of corruption in the game. Allow me to share with you some facts of that game.

It is very clear from these stats that the Boks were in actual fact running rampant here. Bryce not only impeded the Boks from being able to retain the ball at the breakdown; very specifically he haulted the Bok attack in Australia's 22. He used his influence as ref to eleviate pressure in the Aussie 22. When the Boks broke the line and scored tries they were wiped off the board. In all 21 GUARANTEED points were taken from the Boks in those three tries alone! I terms of tries and penalties alone from pressure in Aussie 22... well, it's patently obvious that the Boks were easily denied in excess of over 30 points in that game. The only area of the game the Boks failed to dominate was the breakdown battle in key phases.

Quite clearly the Boks succeeded in completely nillifying the core of Australia's threat. As I've said before, Australia are very frail to physicality and cannot impose themselves if you cut down their space. The Boks finally, under Nienabers excellence, took heed of Australia's humiliating losses over the previous few years and stuffed them. Here are South Africa's backline stats in contrast to the above:

So we can safely conclude that the Boks backline not only succeeded in defensive brilliance but in actual fact outclassed their opponents ball in hand. The only facet of play that the Boks stuttered in was the breakdown. This is the key area that cost the Boks the game. It allowed Australia to alleviate pressure and clear their lines many times. Despite the Boks being hindered by this they still broke Australia thrice and managed to completely dominate them. But for the points wiped off the scoreboard the Boks would have won this game by over 30 clear points. That much is a conservative valuation.

To conclude I would like to take a brief moment to address New Zealand's 2007 exit from the World Cup. New Zealand were matched in all areas of play and were unable to mentally subdue and defeat their opponents. They were by no means beaten by the ref, nor a forward pass, but an overlap that had one Frenchman clear through. Here is something to take into consideration before responding to this.

At least the Ozzies fired that crooked ref Marks who destroyed the Sharks season last year. Why didn't nz do likewise to BL - but no they make him nz ref of the year!!!!!!!!. I still believe that the last four years of SA test rugby were let down by a buffoon of a coach and a failure to meld SA power rugby along with some more enterprising back play. With great centres and wings, it is unfortunate they don't see much of the ball. Habana only seems to get his hands on it if he intercepts the pill.

With regards to Bryce Lawrence, he has admitted to having a shocker. I agree that SA shoulda/coulda won & that Aussie defence crossed the line into cheating. But that is rugby, every team plays to the ref, and SA is not lily white on that! The key is to adapt, & I think you missed Bakkies Botha simply dealing with Pocock's infringing. & Beeno's stats, if accurate, are intriguing but show that ABs play to the edge of the law better than SA - i.e. smarter!

Final comment wrt the vitriol. I agree with TeraNova wholeheartedly. The attacks are personal and mindless, why attack a typo for goodness sake. btw, Denny, where you live doesn't equal who you support, so what is this about egg on face? Some growing up is needed because this is juvenile stuff and reflects poorly on SA supporters if it is indicative, an element which enables the sweeping generalisation that SA rugby supporters are boorish. So, even though I've only just signed up after being invited, I can quickly see that I'm in the wrong company. Life is too short to waste my time here.

New Zealand are not smarter, they merely preferred. It's quite clear what they are doing. Did you not notice Joubert LITERALLY turn a blind eye to New Zealand in the final. He literally made an effort not to see a lot of what they were doing. Very uncharacteristic. The stats Beeno posted are very accurate. I researched them in 2010 as well. Here's a link I want you to watch. And I want you to honestly tell me that the Boks would have gotten away with even one of these illegal tactics. Tell me how it's just the way things go that one team has an enormous advantage in playing outside the laws.

An inept ref was not the only reason we lost the game.A combination of Pocock's cheating and the Boks inability to finish of their chances were contributing factors.

With all the possesion and silly mistakes like knocking the ball forward with a try beckoning the Boks have only half a right to be peeved.The game was theirs to win despite everything conspiring against them.Simply....they blew it.

Anyway memories are too painful so this is my last comment on THAT game.Lets move forward.Exciting times ahead with HM as the new coach.Can't wait for the Poms in june.

...all and all i thought it was a very good game and the best team won on the day.
