...The axe has swung for three referees in Super Rugby after some performances in recent rounds.

Argentine Francisco Pastrana, Australian James Leckie and South African Lorens Van der Merwe have also been culled for the rest of the season.

Looks like the Kiwis are the only ones producing decent refs...shame really...

SANZAR Game Manager Lyndon Bray said, "We have always strived to have strong accountability within our team and importantly, accountability for the competition. As such, we have always sought to conduct ourselves in a fair, transparent and open manner.

Australian Andrew Lees has somehow miraculously dodged the axe by the looks after having a shocker at Loftus awarding tries against the advice of the TMO

...and how Stuart Berry has dodged the axe after two absolute shockers is anybodys guess..he must have some friends with very deep pockets i think...

Its been reported that SA referee Stuart Berry should be grateful to the male members of the Kenyan parliament.

Thanks to them, his handling of the Reds-Lions match was only the second most outrageous thing to happen on the African continent in recent days.

After a heated debate that so enraged female MPs that they stormed out of the chamber in protest, Kenya's parliament late last week passed a bill formalising polygamy.

Last year it was the Kiwi refs - this year it is spread out a bit.  Watch out for more kiwis to  bite the dust as the series goes on.  The NZ TV monitors were useless as a start = they should also get the chop.

Must say I'm also surprised that Stuart Berry survived the cut but I hope all the squealing ref-bashers (and there are a lot of them) are taking note that SANZAR do monitor refs and do take action where required. Francisco Pastrana in particular looked out of his depth.

How many times do we have to listen to blubbering crybabies like Baboon-ou, Moffie and Arthur John whining on and on about how the refs aren't good enough? Well, here's more proof that SANZAR are prepared to take action and try to improve the situation even if it means that less qualified refs will now be given an opportunity to prove themselves . . . but just wait for the high-pitched, indignant and self-righteous blubbering if they don't!

The real problem isn't with the refs, it's with slack-jawed half-wits who never played rugby and don't have the foggiest idea about the laws but who sit on their couch at home pretending that they know more than the world's top referees who have to make their calls without access to slo-mo replays and hi-definition close ups.

Ah but there's the point Rip, they don't have to make their decisions without the benefit of slo-mo replays. The technology exists. And they should use it, because the number of errors is unacceptable. Contrary to this being a positive for your case that refs are great sportsmen who blow a fair whistle, I'm more inclined to believe the NZ commentators, who were scathing about the Bargie ref....another little tin pot dictator trying to please his masters.

By the way, can't your dentist help with the slack jaw?

Cricket umpiring seems to be worse these days than when we had men who relied on their own judgement ,experience  and skill ,men like Dickie Bird and the like .Hot spots and eagle eye and all the rest seem to have made a slow game even slower ! So it seems that even with an array of aids at their disposal umpires/refs still cop flak from all sides ,maybe the players should just take it on the chin and coaches can take it up later when  when the game is peer reviewed ?

We'll someone needs to remind me why we are trying to force a foreign ref into S15. Ok I get it that it's practice for the 4NC with Argentina involved but that comp is ruled by a panel of the top refs from the countries. Just like the WC - so if the barg ies can't supply a ref good enough then tough shit. Why are they trying to coach a ref into the position and degrading the S15?

It is all well and good cutting crap referees, but why were they allowed to referee a match in the first place. Who selected them, who trained them, why are they making mistakes and not following the guidelines.

Okay, one at a time . . .

"It is all well and good cutting crap referees, but why were they allowed to referee a match in the first place?"

Because they are/were the best refs available. There are no better or more qualified referees to choose from. This is as good as it gets when it comes to refereeing. If you know of better and more qualified refs, please be sure to let SANZAR know!

"Who selected them, who trained them?"

SANZAR selected them based on their refereeing record in local competitions and based on recommendations from the three unions. I'm pretty sure they were all initially trained as refs at club level and they progressed through the ranks to Super 15 level because they were the best. Once at Super 15 level, they are given certain directives on how to interpret various laws and what emphasis to put on certain offences etc, but I'm pretty sure these top class refs are no longer trained on the laws of the game or how to referee, they're recognised professionals at the very top of their game.

"Why are they making mistakes and not following the guidelines."

Ummm . . . because they're human and . . . ermmm . . . humans make mistakes? Do you know of any rugby players who never make mistakes? No? Do you bleat and cry and whine every time a player makes a mistake? If not, why are the refs any different?

For the umpteenth time, the current panel of S15 refs are the best referees that the southern hemisphere can produce. Yes, the non-performers are being held accountable for poor decisions and they are either being replaced or having their responsibilities downgraded, but you and all the other tearful ref-bashing crybabies need to be aware that the refs replacing them will not necessarily be an improvement . . . they're refs who previously didn't make the grade and they're being given an opportunity to show if they can do better than their predecessors. There are no guarantees so get ready for more loud, pointless and counter-productive bitching from foot-stamping and ignorant dolts like you!

Rooipoes last week you were raving about how good the referees are, and this week many of them are being punished for poor performance, and others are considered lucky to escape sanction.
All further examples of your ignorance and acceptance of your own low standards. Many of the errors are so basic that it is incompetence, like the Argentinian referee.
"SANZAR Game Manager Lyndon Bray said, "We have always strived to have strong accountability within our team and importantly, accountability for the competition".
If the people at the top of the organisation can only chop and change referees without any solid plan for improvement, then they need to be replaced.
