Injured captain Richie McCaw has been included in the All Blacks squad for their trip to Argentina and South Africa.

A decision on whether or not McCaw, who injured his left knee against the Pumas in Hamilton, is available to play against the Boks will be made later in the week in Argentina. If he's not available, then Matt Todd will join the squad in South Africa.

'We believe that the best chance of having Richie available to play against South Africa is by having him travel with the squad and getting "hands-on" treatment from the All Blacks medical staff,' said coach Steve Hansen.

The All Blacks have recalled veteran Piri Weepu following a late injury to scrumhalf TJ Perenara, while flyhalf Tom Taylor has been confirmed as the injury replacement for Dan Carter.

'TJ has suffered a stress fracture in his lower left leg and is expected to be out of rugby for at least six weeks and, therefore, will miss the rest of the Rugby Championship,' said Hansen. 'It's obviously a huge disappointment for him and us because, even though he hasn't had any game time yet for the All Blacks, he has been developing well within the squad.

'We have selected Piri as a replacement for two reasons: one, given the environments we are going into, it would be unfair to bring in a novice halfback; and secondly, we have also seen advances in his game in the areas we asked him to improve in.'

The All Blacks depart Auckland for Argentina on Saturday, and play the Pumas at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata next Saturday and the Boks the following weekend at Ellis Park.

Whether McCaw plays or not is not the issue here.  He remains an insirational leader and motivator of troops and whether we like it or not, just his mere presence inspires the team.  Cleaver move by the coaching staff.

Yeah ... as is the norm, we can expect McCaw to play a few and then injure himself ... play a few more and then injure himself again ... till he finally decides to call it a day.

heres the real truth, mccaw always was a carthorse. i givec the fella credit here he has good hands and he can support in attack well but the myth ends there. what else does he have? ahh yes immunity from the refs. now ytou see why he is included they simply have to have him on the field he doesnt have to play well just be there.
