He was bumped off in the latest Deon Meyer/ Benny Griessel novel. I kid you not, a fellow called JJ played the role of the corpse. Apparently he dropped the ball once too often.

Beeno will have a fit about somebody else,  I saw Kobus van Wyk playing for the Hurricanes and was in red hot form,  See what a decent coach can make of a player.

Kobus v Wyk should have played 13 A wasted talent on the wing. No point being white on the wing!!

We will never know One of those quality players that slipped the recognition net playing on the wing Good 13’s are scarce, he might have just been a good one Played centre at school and U20 There are some players that should or could have been like Kobus and others that have been but should not have like Morne Steyn. Take Morne’s goal kicking out of the equation and he is a nothing, play a white boy like Kobus on the wing and he lives off scraps ending up under the radar. He stayed at WP for far too long stuck behind Juan de Jongh, so I guess wing was his little bit of salvation. Stupid move going to the Sharks considering they had Nkosi and Mapimpi on the wing, plus Mvovo and Am at 13 His agent did not do his homework

Actually I tend to agree about Kobus ....quite a physical player.

There is something about him and it’s always irritated me that he has not seen the limelight. There is a history of players over the years like him and then others that should never have seen the limelight at all but did.

Dave have to agree with you on what you wrote about Van Wyk.   Playing outside of De Jongh was a serious handicap any player could have.   De Jongh was a poor 13 - the worst aspect of his were his passing game which was often discussed in the media at the time.   Huge handicap that one.

There was one Stormers game against the Hurricanes where Hue Jones was used at 13 and the referee (Jackson) had to assist  the Huricanes to win the game.  Jackson was after the game severely criticized in the New Zealand rugby discussion and he got red in the face when  three of the cases where he was totally wrong was shown during the panel discussion.

The real reason for the backline improvement in that game was the absence of De Jongh  from the team. .

Mike I meant that v Wyk could not play 13 for the Stormers because de Jongh for reasons not rugby was the preferred choice at 13. de Jongh was good in open field play but crap in traffic given his lack of size. I would definitely have played v Wyk at 13 for the Stormers ahead of de Jongh but politics got in the way of that I guess. So v Wyk’s best bet was to compete for a wing spot which he did and wasted his time in the process. v Wyk was a very good wing but being white, would never have cemented a permanent starting spot in the side. He has the perfect attributes of a 13, the speed, physicality and feet of a wing plus the hands and brains of a ball player having played much of his junior rugby as a 12
