Ex Keo

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer believes Bakkies Botha is good enough to still play for South Africa and he singled out Pieter-Steph du Toit as the No 5 lock answer.

Meyer, speaking to the media during the two day Bok camp in Cape Town, bemoaned the hold the Japanese clubs held over players in excluding them from international rugby, and said Andries Bekker’s absence would be massive for the Boks this season. (Andries is world class)

Meyer praised the efforts of several European-based Boks and said if the player was a better option than the local player he’d get selected. In the case of a 50-50 call the local-based player would be favoured.(Correct approach)

However, Meyer said the nature of Japenese club contracts forced players to commit exclusively to the club. Those who play in Japan give up playing international rugby, while the core of those in Europe are still available for selection.

Meyer felt the form of Bakkies Botha had been impressive among the South African veterans overseas while he endorsed the claims of Sharks lock Du Toit.

‘I’m very worried about the No 5 lock position,’ said Meyer. ‘Andries is playing some of his best rugby but he won’t be available. The No 5 lock is probably the most important player in the pack because he runs the lineouts, is heavily involved in scrums and organises and takes most of the restarts. To lose a player of his experience and class is a big blow.

‘I’ve identified one or two players who could be shifted from other positions. (Pieter-Steph) Du Toit has played in other positions but I believe he could be the answer there. That said, it takes two or three years for a young player to become comfortable in that role, so we have to be patient.(Ag nonsense Meyer just ask ou snapster - his under 16 locks would outplay Juandre! Hahhahahahahaha)

I also believe Bakkies Botha can still play for the Springboks. Eben Etzebeth came through brilliantly last year, but how much better can he be with Bakkies mentoring him?’ (Exactly as I  suggested - great minds think alike!!!)_

Meyer, who in his first year was initially reluctant to pick overseas players, included seven in his end of year touring squad. He had also picked Bath-based flanker Francois Louw for the Rugby Championship.

He (Francois Louw) is a perfect example of a player who is based abroad who adds tremendous value. He was probably the player who changed our 2012 season for the better when he came into the mix.’ (But some here dont get it and want wee brussouw back. The mind boggles.)

If Bakkies is playing well by all means bring him into the Bok equation.

What is clear about Meyer, is that he is so out of touch with reality and has no idea regarding the players he has at his disposal. If the man was worth his salt, he would be telling us that our lock position is better than it has been in years.

In Etzebeth and Steph du Toit, we have potentially a world beating pair here. Behind these obvious two we have the experience of Flip to draw on and a long list of young locks who have great potential. Look no further than Lood de Jager, Paul Willemse, Anton Bresler, Jandre Marais, Peet Marais, David Bulbring, Raynier Bernado, Ruan Botha and Jaques du Plessis.

Meyer should also be aware of players based overseas who could add value and with whom he should be maintaining contact.  We have good young locks in Quinn Roux, Carl Wegner and Etienne Oosthuizen based overseas.

Nuts as per normal.  Botha is 34 this year and is no better than Etzebeth and the present locks.   Don't be like Mozart who sees everything of five years ago as still applicable now.

Saffex is 100% correct in this case - so I support him in what he says above.   A coach who is out of touch with the latest developments in world rugby and out of touch with players  at his disposal - what a farce.

I hope Meyer is just messing about that type of stuff, I really do.

Mike, Snapster and Ntanga the subtleties are escaping you. If Bakkies is playing well he could be good for a solid 60 minutes. Allows rotaion and gives younger guys a superb mentor. Guys like Etzebth and Du toit surely could learn from him.

Try and see a more holistic picture.

Thankfully Meyer is thinking broadly even if some here are not.

Forget about wee bresler for one. He is not fit to tie Bakkies's boot laces. We are talking here of an all time great who by all accounts is still palying grea trugby. If so by all means pick him.

Perspective please oaks perspective!   As ou maaaike always likes to say but doesnt carry through on - pick players on what they do?

Ag what complete kak......Bakkies is done at 34, we dont need him. Selecting him would be about as productive as selecting Guthro Steenkamp and CJ v/d Linde last year.

It was a massive march backwards by Meyer..........Meyer could not think broadly if it slapped him in the face. The man is horribly out of touch

 Saffex I agree fully...lunatic stuff.

Hey you forgot to bring back Ricky Januarie from Lyon UO...lol...as well.

This is the type of mindset that still prevails then all what has been said falls on infertile ground.

Its almost as bad as Bolla Conradie still playing 9 for the WP Vodacom Cup side this year and Marius Joubert captaining the Sharks Vodacom Cup side

If it was the world cup final tomorrow and Ezbeth, Steph Du Toit, Andries Bekker all get injured in the semi final,

and their was no other locks in the squad- only then Bakkies would be an option.

Otherwise he can just focus on doing his headbuttes in France.
