Was an unbelievable player in his peak. Top man, top player.

In his hay day good player but not before time was a penalty machine in the end.

Bakkies did the honourable thing by annoiuncing his retirement from interntional rugby.   He new he was not up to standard anymore.
One has to thank him for his contribution to rugby up to and including 2010 - thereafterhe went into regression and at present he really was competing to be nominated for the lowest work rate player in the Springbok team.
Hope Matfield does the same - but he is too egocentric to even consider it.

Shuttup Mike you pathetic fool. A great career comes to an end in as classy a way as one has seen. One is reminded of how Bakkies travelled to play with the Barbarians to honor Jake after RWC07, while some of his team mates didn't bother. A gruff exterior for sure, but a decent man.
Looking at Bakkies on this tour he was not so agile, so I said in another string it was probably time. The great lock knew it himself and leaves the stage, but the memories will remain.

Why should I shut up?  I thanked him for the great service to  SA rugby when he was at his peak and was then honest enough to say that he probably realized he was not up to  standard anymore and did the honourable thing by announcing his retirement.
You - the moron leader - did not want to see it happen and would keep on trumpting him for selectoion based on reputation,   Matfiekd s hould also quit before he fuirther disgraces  himself and cost the Springboks badly  through his presence.

Any of you guys see Bakkies up close?....I'm 6'4" and shook hands with Victor...dwarfed me...but then Bakkies dwarfed everyone. Physically the man was enormous.

Tx for the memory.
