Teams Argentina 15 Emiliano Boffelli; 14 Santiago Cordero, 13 Matias Moroni, 12 Jeronimo de la Fuente, 11 Ramiro Moyano; 10 Nicolas Sanchez, 9 Tomas Cubelli; 8 Facundo Isa, 7 Javier Ortega Desio, 6 Pablo Matera (captain); 5 Marcos Kremer, 4 Matias Alemanno; 3 Juan Figallo, 2 Agustin Creevy, 1 Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro Substitutes: 16 Julian Montoya, 17 Mayco Vivas, 18 Santiago Medrano, 19 Guido Petti, 20 Tomas Lezana, 21 Gonzalo Bertanou, 22 Benjamin Urdapilleta, 23 Joaquin Tuculet South Africa 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Kwagga Smith, 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Trevor Nyakane, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Tendai Mtawarira Substitutes: Malcolm Marx, Steven Kitshoff, Frans Malherbe, RG Snyman, Francois Louw, Herschel Jantjies, Frans Steyn, Jesse Kriel. ........ On the Bargies, Creevy is back.....but Ole Cruz is missing again. The Boks bring back the Beast ....along with Nyakane and Bongi. It will be interesting to see whose front row adjustments work better. It would also appear that Eraser is settling on some combinations and players: Am not Kriel. Mostert not Lomp. And on the bench: Frans not Jantjies. Louw not Marcel. ........ But we still have a lock playing 7 and Allende playing 12, so hopefully one more iteration.

This is close to a Bok team that could be competitive in the WC. Weaknesses: 1 Mapimpi still seems very hesitant and vulnerable on defence....Dyantyi would add more aggression. 2 Allende....say no more. 3 Stephanie.....at flank....you see him here, you see him there, but never where he is needed and never effec tively slowing down oppo ball. Fortunately there is Kwagga to do the work, but there is still the ghost in the room.... 4 Kolisi, the ghost, who can disappear for long stretches in matches, indeed for a whole season....but still be entitled to his captain's slot at 6. This wasn't true of Etzebeth, Whiteley or Vermeulen.....out of sight/out of the captaincy. Not so for the 'inspirational' Kolisi. He remains cappie even though it's painfully obvious we are just fine without him.

It seems we have 2 threads for the Bok team announcement.
To re-iterate stated points.
Aug 07, 2019, 23:55

Pretty much the same team that drew with the All Blacks, except for the front row.

The throwing in is a concern. Bongi can probably throw better than Marx.
The general form of Marx has been average so far- at least by his standards.

Frans Steyn being on the bench suggests that Carthuizen is the third choice centre. Steyn appears to be covering flyhalf and inside centre. This might just to test a third choice flyhalf, or replace Jantjies as the bench flyhalf.

Kwagga gets another chance.
Flouw seems assured of at least a bench position to cover eight-man and openside.

Lomp appears to be part of the support crew. Marcel could be joining Lomp carrying the tackle bags.
Duane Vermuelen is the preferred captain, at least in the absence of Kolisi who has transformation points.
The bulk of Dyanti could offer more Manpimpi who has had little opportunity on attack Dyanti is also a better chaser.

I am less optimistic about the Springboks beating the Pumas with that team for the following reasons:-

*   Erasmus apparently  decided that rolling mauls are not the way to go - the selectionn of Mostert proves that.

*   One should start praying Pollard can play 80 minutes - Steyn is a dead loss at flyhalf or center,

*    Hope the rest week results in an improvement in performance o f Vermeulen - he was desperately poor against the AB's

*     Louw is another has been that should not be in the squad - he was almost as bad as Vermeulen was against the AB's

Hope Willemse is back next week - any WC with Steyn around will  be a disaster to start off with,

Maybe a timely reminder that he needs to play and not fiddle around will help Marx.  Etzebeth needs a similar reminder.   ,

Etzebeth, Louw, Mostert, Vermeulen - all these guys were very good and involved against the ABs.

There is a segment of pundits who apparently thinks that if a forward doesn't make a bullocking run or two smashing through waves of opponents, he is not doing anything or he has failed. Look deeper for a change, down where the rough stuff happens and see who is there doing the donkey work to secure possession and plugging the holes when things unravel.

I am a Vermeulen fan and although he did some good things in the Allblacks match, he made more than a couple of errors and did not play to his normal high standards. I expect a big improvement by him.

Edit: Am didn't do much wrong, but he wasn't nearly assertive enough...Mapimpi is lucky to get another start.

Pakie

Vermeulen was very good and involved in the AB game - sure h was for the benefit of the  AB's.  His main bugger-up was the donating of the ball to them leading to the Goodhue try - even though you and the other Idiot Speakers tried unsuccessfully  to blame De Allende for scoring of the Goodhue try,  That was not the only ball loss of Vermeulen - there was another knock-on and two penalties given away by him - one of which was converted,  So Vermeulen was good - blaas my siel - he only handed 10 points on a platter to the AB's

As for Louw - he made one possession turnover - bit for the rest not a single ball carry and one tackle made in the13 minutes he was playing.  If that is not substandard for an open-side loosie, what is?

Etzebeth needs to be more involved in games - he needs a wake-up call - that is all I said,.

The complete absence of reasonably successful rolling mauls in Springbok Rugby says it all,  Like the case was with Matfield,  Mostert is turning the Springbok Tight 5 into a Tight 4.  Not physically up to standard.   In any event the line-out organization was a shambles in the AB test - s omething which cause accuracy problems for the hookers,

He didn't make all that many errors, Draad. The possession loss that kicked off the AB try was unfortunate, one of the two penalties he conceded was questioned even by the NZ commentators as Vermeulen was on his feet with full rights to the ball. Players who are in the thick of things (to use the old phrase) all the time will inevitably make an error here and there, especially with the breakdown laws as ambiguous they are.

Soft-soaping won't help - if Du Toit made the mistake Vermeulen made - you would write a book about it and Mozart would add two books to it and AO 4.

Already Mozart and AO blamed De Allende for the try being scored and you add your support for the BS they wrote as per normal

Nobody can ever trust any performance and incidents descriptions neither of the three of you give on site - it is always twisted in line with your prejudice and that alone makes it garbage writing.

Actually no, I wouldn't. When have I ever written a book about Steph? My stance on Steph is that he is a solid player, but overhyped in comparison to other players making similarly valuable contributions who hardly get a mention. That's it. I have no other beef with him.

That's mostly my stance .....solid but over hyped and I would add, really a lock. The only reason for repeating myself is the hype never stops, so there's a constant need for balance. The mistake Vermeulen made was spilling the ball .....not allowing the ABs to convert that into a try from 60 metres out. The normal consequence of spilling a ball is a possession change.....the fact that the ABs converted that into a try was down to Am, Mapimpi and Allende. Likewise when Morne never found touch against Oz in 2014, the normal consequence is a possession change.....the fact that the Bok defence allowed Oz to run straight through them from the touchline 50metres out was on them, not Morne. Yes these were mistakes and an especially poor one from Morne. But that doesn't excuse a half hearted, craven response from their team mates in subsequent play.

Pakie, a couple is 2 and more than a couple of errors is obviously more than 2. With his amount of involvement in the match and keeping the opposition in mind too, it is certainly forgivable...still odd for the big man, so expect he will be back with a bang.

Pakie you do speak shit - Mostert could not do the donkey work if he tried. The guy has zero physicality. I’m astounded that a guy like Rassie does not see this obvious fact. The guy is all energy and no productivity. He runs hard at the opposition but invariably gets bounced back. His supporters are blinded by his passion and energy but look closely and powder puff has zero impact physically - something you simply cannot afford from your test lock. What makes it so damn bloody frustrating is the fact that we have so many good options at lock but we choose a bloody light weight.

Mozart

The excuses you thought up about the Goodhue try and the Morne BS kick in 2014 is amazing and show clearly that your idea about rugby is totally twisted,   If Du Toit spilled the ball  like Vermeulen did you would write a book on site blaming only him for the try but because Vermeulen buggered up the try is now the fault of  De Allende and two other players,

Twisted thinking and totally so,  When  spilling of the ball like that occurs the whole backline defense line-up was not in a sound defensive condition and the defense was affectively disrupted - same as happened with Morne's shit penalty kick you blamed the defense against the Aussies.   De Villiers was the 12 in that game - was he to blame as well or was Morne himself - with hios eight tackles made and 7 missed to blame as well?

Keep it up - only you can come up with BS like you did here.  LMAO.

Mapimpi didn't have his best game, but I still back him as our best wing. Nkosi is much improved this year, but still #4 in the pecking order. I choose Kolbe over Dyantyi. Mapimpi and Kolbe are our smartest and hardest working wings.

I like the front row. I thought Malherbe was excellent last year, but he was half a tick too slow for almost every ruck. Fatigue? Whatever the reason, Nyakane is the form tighthead. Beast was never out of the equation.

Damian offers us nothing. Andre is our premier 12, with Frans and Serfontein our only test viable alternatives. J-Raz is selling us very short here on both sides of the ball.

I don't buy Herschel.

Steph is okay against certain opponents in certain games. He can be horrifically exposed. An accident waiting to happen... again.

Kwagga at 6 is a tease. We won't have him there at any point during the WC. The politicians were complaining when Kolisi was subbed, imagine not playing in a WC game? Particularly a big one! I had my doubts about Kwagga but he really did put his hand up throughout the All Black test.

Muck.... Allende waddling back, trailing the play after Goodhue started a metre behind him, was feckless play by one of our senior players. At least Am made a full hearted effort, as did Mostert.....Mapimpi and Allende acted like it was somebody else's problem. No respect for those kinds of players.

There is no difference between the effect Mostert and Stephanie have in contact... complete myth. As for the Mostert not effective in mauls balls......totally disproven two ways: 1 Empirically..... the Lions had the best maul in Super Rugbywhen Mostert played for them. 2 Analytically.....there is no way the ball taker in the lineout can add much to momentum. He is vertical and often facing backwards. What he adds is accurate lineout takes and smooth offloading of the ball to create momentum. Nobody better at that than Mostert. Mostert is10 times the rugby player that Lomp is....and Snyman may be better yet.

Huge difference -  Du Toit is physically stronger and much so,  Du Toit tackles players back 0 Mostert cannot even do that with a scrummie.

How any matches did you watch the Lions play in Mostert's last year?

So lesson no 1000 to you - because of slow intake.  The ball catcher do organize the forming of the maul and thereafter co-ordinate functioning of the maul.  Obviously has to have the strength the stands firm while his supporters form up behind him.  Problem is Mostert is not strong enough physically to initiate the forming of the maul,  Remember France last year when the maul went backwards by meters before Du Toit took over the co-ordination role.  Comprehende????

No difference between Mostert and PSDT in contact - wow what utter shit. I tell you what let’s forget the past and judge their effect in contact this weekend. It’s going to be one way traffic but let’s all pay special attention to the physical element these two players bring to the game - forget the runs in space, forget the line outs or low tackles made. We focus on hard hits and carries with ball in hand or effecting clear outs - the physical stuff Steph vs Powder puff

His average carrying distance is twice that of Vermeulen and Louw - and your assessment is dim as per normal.   Look at the situation in tests this year:-

Vermeulen  - 10 carries -  19 meters  beating NO defnders

Du Toit       -   9 carries  -  38 meters making 3 lean breaks beating 1 defender

Louw          -   9 carries  -  5 meters beating No defenders

Mostert       -   9 carries -   5 meters beating No defenders,

Idiot - try again - you are too stupid to interpret anything.

All based on one long run against the Wallabies....his clean break, with nobody in front of him. Clearly this data is not statistically significant....too few data points. If we take just the NZ game in which Vermeulen also played the picture is quite different, with Vermeulen much more productive in their one common game. Bur best go to a large sample....Super Rugby: Stephanie 95 runs for 466 metres Vermeulen 88 runs for 526 metres. Case closed.

Must I remind you again of the four bugger--ups Vermeulen made in the AB  test?

We  have the test career runs of Vermeulen - outstanding player before his injury in 2015,  Played no tests in 2016 and 2017/  In  the tests he played in 2018 and his year - bar the first two England tests where he looked like the Vermeulen of old - his performances  were all sub-standard  to average in performance.

Pity - but his present Springbok performances have been questionable.

Muck once again....don't change the subject. Nobody said the neck injury never had an effect on Vermeulen. But in spite of it he remains one of the most effective fetchers in test rugby. I am also looking at the present, the whole of Super Rugby 2019 where Vermeulen outgained Stephanie by 6 metres a run vs Stephanie's 4.9 metres per run. A productivity leap of 22%. Your point is destroyed. Now make another point if you want, but dont link it to this point in a transparent effort to save face.

In Super rugby there was one 60 meter run - nothing else of real value,  You compare carries, bit not defense - why?
Anyway - you can believe what you want about the present performance scenario - like you did with so many other over-the-hill players - living on cloud 9 is your way - not mine.   To many nondescript performances on test level in 2018 and this year in the one test he played he failed badly,  No amount of cover-up by you will cover that one.

Steph ranked 28th out of the top 30 South African ball carriers in super rugby, carrying for 1.7 metres per carry. Thor ranked 15th with 3.8 metres per carry. Lets put it this way, Dan du Preez was the most utilised carrier in super rugby, with 211 carries, for 2.7 metres per carry. Thor beat the number one rated carrier this season. You cannot begin to question Thor's effectiveness in relation to Steph any more than you can run whilst standing on your own foot.

To add insult to injury, Thor was the second best pilfer this season. We need this man in the starting XV. It's non-negotiable.
