Ambitious Bastareaud looking for more than a holiday in New York2019-11-08 20:39Mathieu Bastareaud (Gallo Images)

Lyon - Former France international Mathieu Bastareaud said on Friday he is joining New York's Rugby United to go on 'holiday'.

Bastareaud, 31, who retired from Test rugby after being left out of les Bleus' World Cup squad, is heading to the US after his final game with Lyon this weekend.

He joined the French club on a temporary deal as cover during the tournament from Toulon after making his senior debut as a 19-year-old with Stade Francais.

"I'm going to New York for a fun holiday, but I'm also competitor. I'm also going there to be at the top of my game and to win something," he said.

"I want to have a new experience in an unknown country. I've only been there once and that was to sign my contract.

"I've played in the Top 14 for 12 years. I started quite young. It's a lot of pressure, a lot energy," he added.

The 54-time international, who will feature for the Barbarians against Fiji on November 17 before crossing the Atlantic, said playing in Major League Rugby will be a drop in standard.

"There's a lot of ambition to develop rugby in the US, and why not host a World Cup? I'm going there with a lot curiosity," he said.

"I'm not expecting the same quality as the Top 14 or the European Cup. They like to play a lot, like in Super Rugby, but at a lower quality."

The powerful ball-carrier has changed position during his time at Lyon having played six matches at No. 8 after a career as a centre.

"The fact of discovering a new position has changed my job in the space of four months. Playing with the forwards is totally different," he said.

"In the backs, we're used to shouting at the forwards when they forget things. I understand better now. I'm happy with what I've done in the position."

New Zealand's two-time World Cup winner Ma'a Nonu will also play in the 12-team MLR after having signed a deal with the San Diego Legion, with the new season starting in early February.

He'll love it in New York, 16 oz steaks vs all those French salads.

16 oz steak thoughts have made me hungry. The steaks in the UK are pathetic- more suited to vegetarians than real meat lovers.

This player tortured us. Was a very good centre. I don't envy the yanks who will be facing him. If only they knew!

Very pace-deficient as a backline player.    His torture was bearable sine France did not beat SA often.   Fofana was a much better center than Fatso.

I suppose breaking almost every tackle, and running over the best player in the world isn't impressive enough.

He did not break almost every tackle 0 he did break tackles at times at a snail pace.

The Boks could not cope with the physicality. He was by far the best centre on the field.

When did that happen - piss brain?   The Springboks played a teat in 2018 where Bauteraudd carried the ball 8 times for a 7 meter gain in territory.   His opponent in that game carries the ball 11 times for a 30 meter gain.    That shows you up for talking crap once more.  Happy Distortion Day to you.

He ran over Kriel and Steph. The game Mostert, Bongi and Louw saved.

People can’t get over how big Mathieu Bastareaud has got on Major League Rugby debut

Rugby fans have been commenting on the size of French Rugby star Mathieu Bastareaud after images appeared on social media of the French star in action.

Mathieu Bastareaud played in his first game for Rugby United who is based in New York!

Many fans were commenting on how the centre seemed to have put on a few pounds since he joined his new club from Toulon in October.

The Frenchman joined as a big signing into the MLR this year and many fans were shocked to see the pounds that he had put on in this game.

Here is the translation for this tweet showing the larger than life man…

“I wouldn’t want to overburden him because I really admire him, but he is just not there…

Looks like he is renting a house above a Mcdonalds. This person needs Roedoelf Straulie to be his coach, team manager and logistics coordinator at KampStaalstraad.

A player that either you can either love or hate but overall very effective on one hand and on the other quite a thug.

Give him some due when he goes for the line nobody can stop him...rather like trying to stop a charging buffalo. When he hits you it's like running into a brick wall, although he's getting on now he's as dangerous as an ageing Dagga Cape Buffalo.

The Yanks will enjoy him.
