In a challenging encounter at Sandy Park, Bath Rugby faced a stern test against Exeter Chiefs, succumbing to a 35-12 defeat in their latest Premiership outing. Despite the adverse conditions and a spirited performance from some, the overall team effort fell short, leaving both players and fans pondering what went wrong.

Tom de Glanville, returning to the starting lineup, found the game tough going. His afternoon was marred by a collision and a consequential yellow card which significantly hampered Bath’s efforts. His performance was emblematic of a team struggling to find rhythm, scoring a mere 5 on our scale.

Joe Cokanasiga, usually a dynamic presence on the wing, was largely invisible due to the limiting conditions, earning a 4. Centre Ollie Lawrence, despite his best efforts, was outclassed by his direct opponent, managing only a 5, similar to Will Butt who also struggled to make an impact against a formidable Exeter backline.

Henry Arundell showed glimpses of his potential but ultimately was unable to make a decisive impact, scoring a 6. The narrative was much the same for Finn Russell, who, after a disappointing Champions Cup semi-final, found little to exploit in his repertoire against a disciplined Exeter, his performance also rated at 5.

"From an execution point of view we weren’t good enough,"

admitted Johann van Graan, reflecting on a frustrating second half where Bath failed to capitalize on the wind advantage. Captain Ben Spencer, who scored a 6, echoed this sentiment, highlighting execution errors that cost them dearly.

In the forwards, Alfie Barbeary put in a commendable shift, one of the few to start again after a tough game the previous week, earning a 7. Sam Underhill also worked tirelessly, especially when Bath were a man down, and his efforts were rewarded with a try, though his discipline was less commendable.

Ted Hill was a standout, his relentless effort earning him an 8 despite the team's struggles. "You can't fault Ted's effort," would be a fair assessment, as he seemed to be fighting an uphill battle throughout the match.

The less said about Quinn Roux's day the better; a red card 14 minutes in for a high tackle severely handicapped his team, and he earned the lowest score of 3. The front row had mixed fortunes, with Dan Frost scoring a try and earning a 7, but Francois van Wyk being overshadowed by his direct opponent in what should have been a celebratory 50th appearance for Bath, scoring a 5.

This defeat leaves Bath with much to ponder as they approach their final fixture against Leicester, with hopes of securing a home semi-final now in jeopardy. The team will need to regroup and address the issues highlighted in this tough encounter if they are to finish their season on a high note.
