Anderson beat Federer in five sets. Federer lead two sets to love and I switched to Craven Week Rugby expecting Federer to go through to the semi. I switched back to tennis and the game was still on - the match lasted more than 4 hours.
Thinking that Federer is just too old to win major tennis titles - he ran out of steam today.

Nadal also had a 5 set win over Del Potro. The mans ability to go up another gear in key moments is quite remarkable. Saved alot of break points. Nadal Novak should be interesting. My picks Rafa though.
Fed I think had been going through the motions. Did not face a top 10 player at all. Same with Rafa too I guess. I just think Roger could not surprise Anderson anymore.
I watched the player interviews after the match and as far as I could make out Federer is unlikely top play in the US Open - it seems as if he realizes that major tennis tournaments is beyond his capacity at present and he imied that his family will decide on the way forward.
I think as another Federer admirer that you are correct in your assessment. Federer is the best tennis player ever - but there is an end to every thing - even to the career of best tennis player ever.

Mike it seems Federer is running into problems. One saw this at Halle where he lost to Coric. To me he has three problems. During the four lean years where he never won a major he lost his top spin backhand to a large degree. Secondly he was bunting the ball back on return of service - thereafter his opponent would put the ball into the corners and Federer was then on the run.
His backhand has again lost authority due to his reluctance to play the top spin backhand due to the error levels involved.
Anderson served very well and his his ground shots with a lot of pace. i wonder if Federer who will be 37 next moth has lost a little bit of his reflexes Name me an opening bat at test level who vs 37.
Not buying the fitness story. His loss to Coric was not as a consequence of fitness. Although the match against Anderson went to 5 the rallies were not long. Federer has lost a little bit of speed. Who wins the 100 meters at 37. The margins between winning and losing are small.
Anderson could win the title but as we have see so often a guy takes big scalp and then loses the next match. But if Anderson maintains the level he displayed against Federer he has a chance.

Anderson had an insane road to the final. It would be a phenomenal feat for him to win even a few games in the final. Amazed that he did not collapse on court after he won.
Draad if you watched the Doks/Nadal game you would surely have noticed how demanding the rallies were as compared to Anderson/ Ishner He may not be in as bad shape as you think.

Well done to Doks. Anderson made a big comeback in the third set but the iron will of Doks prevailed. Doks go to 10 in the ranknngs and Anderson to 5.
The match of the tournament in terms of quality was Doks verus Nadal. Dok s leads their head to heads 27-25 with the hard court season coming up.
Can Doks haul in Federar and Nadal re grand slams.
