I was having a fat debate with a few mates about the best bok team since readmission.

the one position that caused us much headache was the number 2 pozzie.

Our selections were based 100% on skill and player ability in their respective side.

Between 5 of us, we couldnt decide on James Dalton, Bismarck or Smit.

The arguments were...

1. If you forget Daltons shit attitude, he was a world class hooker.

2. Smit fitted the Bok game style better than any other hooker. His tight play was better than Daltons and Bizzie ang his lineout throwing was top notch.

3. Bizzie's athleticism is unparalleled... which = awesome work rate.

What about Uli Schmidt or does he not count since not really readmission. Its between Smit and Bismark. If I was coach, I'd go with Bismarks raw power - very close call though, for in his younger days Smit was great

Dalton looked the part. But he was not in the league of some of the guys he played against, like Keith Wood. I think you'd have to give it to Smit at this stage....a quality performer over a number of years. Bismarck could stake a strong claim if he maintains his current level for a few more seasons. Lukas von Biljon was phenomenal until his neck injury...he could have been up there.

Smit suited the Bok set-up and was certainly the greatest captain the Boks ever had but if it comes down to pure fisical power, skills, aggression, ball - carrying, tackling, defending and domination, Bismarck is a cut above the rest, followed closely by Uli Schmidt although Uli's dirty play would of cost the modern test team quite dearly. Uli was a sheer 'malkop' and for a doctor...a crazy man!!

There are several aspects of Bismark's game one can admire, his physicallity, mental toughness, never goes MIA , work at the breakdown and committment to the tight encounters. Smith had a less abrasive approach but at the top of his game, he led well, lineout throws were good, the better scrummager and a generally good defender.

Two totally different players, both very good at their best but from a pure hooking perspective I would choose Bismark. Dalton was very competetive, never shirked the tough stuff and was the quickest of the three by the proverbial country mile. He also seeked to stamp his authority on the opposition. I quite enjoyed his attitude and combatitive spirit.
