I'm sitting at the office as bored as hell...

So a collegue and I have sat down to discuss who we thought was the best international coach since 2000.

It raised a few intresting questions...

Namely ... how do you rank a great coach? Results? Man management? Tech accumen?

Its quite a subjective thing...

So we broke it down into categories and came up with a leader in each category...

Results: We think Clive Woodward (but not 100% certain)

Man management: Jake White (unanimous decision) and Gatland in a distance second.

Tech accumen: Toss up between Eddie Jones, Poephol Henry and Nick Mallet (Robbie Deans doesnt qualify yet... he hasnt transferred his Crusaders repitour into the Aussie side "yet")

Would be intresting to see all of your thoughts.

You okes are going to poofie in your pants when you hear my selection for man management, but I reckon PDV takes it over Jake. As insane as the man was, the players seemed to have massive respect for his ability to manage them on a personal level...he was a raging lunatic in most other spects, but not his people management.

Graham Henry??? World cup winner, Tri-Nations winner, Bledisloe Cup winner, and a brilliant win/loss ratio.

Yes, Pieter de Villiers and his crowd.....  But, if you fill a room with a bunch of Down's syndrome there will be a lot of hugging going on.  I'm not surprised they got along.

Interesting post however, we need to assess this on results as this is the only benchmark and medium we can measure your question. Nonetheless getting these brains trust to work collectively wouldbe the biggest challenge.

Eddie and Jake showed it could work...however, this may sound a bit controversal to my fellow bok brothers but if it took Eddies influence or an amazing stroke of luck on the draw seeing both the All Blacks and the Wallabies knocked out of the 2007 RWC that saw us win the RWC then I am unsure how good Jakes record really was...as there really wasnt a huge success record for him to crow about prior......Hard to claim Jakes real success when we didnt get to play 5 of the better teams in the world and we had another international coach assisting? Now that will start an argument I am sure!!!!

Based upon what has gone before my head coach would have to be:

  • Graham Henry - Head Coach
  • Nick Mallet - Forwards Coach - he would build a team and not individuals
  • Wayne Smith - arguably the best backline coaching exponent going

stupid argument, graham henry best int coach hands down, numbers dont lie people,,,,

jake white - 4 years Boks, 1 RWC, 1 TriNats title, 66% success

Clive woodward - 7 years england. 1 RWC, 3 six nats titles inc 1 grandslam, 71% success rate
clive woodward - 1 year british lions, 0% success (incl draw with argentina, 3 losses to All Blacks and a loss to NZ maori)

graham henry -  4 years  wales, 61% success rate (including first welsh rugby team to beat the Springboks)
graham henry - 1 year british lions, 33.3% success rate
graham henry - 8 years All Blacks, 1 RWC, 5 TriNat titles, 8 years never lost the bledisloe cup, 85% success rate
and while not relevant, lets not forget henry won the super rugby as well back with the blues.
thats why he is a knight, congrats sir graham henry, these facts show beyond a shadow of a doubt who the greatest international coach is.

@bluebok,

i agree with that. PDV went looking for smit and matfield to lead the Boks, thus not alienating different sides/cliques of the national team.

through thick and thin he stuck by smit, even when media and public were calling for his head, he defiantley said fu*k off, smits the best hooker in the world.

burgers eye gouge, despithe mad eveidence, he stuck by him the whole way, even backing him up and invertedly drew a lot of the attention away from burger onto himself.

its ;little wonder the boys would feel that mad kind of loyalty towards him.

from what i heard about jake white, he had his boys, but htere was more then one report about a disgruntled player having problems with white.

Chippo,

I was not in anyway taking away from JW as I do rate him he was always tactically pretty sound it was just the fact that he was coaching when Graham Henry had a pretty awsome Team. The same could be said about Eddie Jones as he also has a great rugby brain.

TBH I would be fair to assume that the level of intelligence, stratergies and tactics at an international level are very close nonetheless, I chose alos on a group of coaches that I think would work well together.

You don't consider Jake a technical coach? His technical understanding of the game is outstanding. It's interesting to hear South Africans not consider the possibility that Eddie might have learnt a few things from Jake over the years! Eddie is not held in high regard in Australia. He is seen as a devisive influence much like Mitchell; a dictator that is more useful in a limited capacity where someone can draw on his certain strengths.

Now onto Jake's record. Lets take a look at each year:

2004 - 69%
2005 - 67%
2006 - 42%
2007 - 82%

Here are some obstacles Jake had in 2006; Schalk Burger (broken neck), Bakkies Botha (calf surgery), Jean De Villiers (cracked rib), Bryan Habana (cracked rib), Butch James (groin and knee), André Pretorius (groin), Joe Van Niekerk (C5 & C6 vertebrae), Jacques Cronje (cracked rib), Danie Rossouw (hamstring), Juan Smith (left quadricep), Eddie Andrews (back), BJ Botha (back surgery), CJ Van Der Linde (Leg), Gurthro Steenkamp (broken hand), Pedrie Wannenburg (wrist surgery), Marius Joubert (fractured hand)

Add to this the intense political pressure of 2006 on top of strained depth and you'll see why that year was as tough as it was. Yet we still won back-to-back tests over our TN foes and broke England's strangehold over us.

When comparing Jake to Henry you must consider the fact that each New zealand coach has the benefit of continuity. That is to say that there is a good management between old and new players and nobody really rocks the boat ala de Villiers, Straeuli or Viljoen kind of way. Henry did make blunders and in the end enjoyed total immunity to the laws as the IRB protected the side. So put into context it's easy to see that Henry, whilst being a very good coach, is not the messiah most would have you believe.

The better coaches are not always appreciated either. Take Eugene Eloff who did far more with the Lions than Mitchell - an ex-All Black coach - has been able to do with a much stronger team.

Complete Packages: Heyneke Meyer, Jake White, Clive Woodward, Graham Henry
Technical Acumen: Rassie, Eddie Jones, Campese, Tim Lane, Nienaber, Mitchell

There are a few more that could make either category. I refuse to recognise man management as that is a mandatory function of a coach. To bleat of this being your style more often than not is a red flag for a deeply flawed coach that relies strongly on the strength of character and intelligence of his squad. Not an ideal person to have.

@ der aristokrat,
and what exactly are the blunders from graham henry are u reffering too??? i dont think anyone is making henry out to be a messiah, but to say that the IRB protected the All Blacks by giving them and henry total immunity is the biggest load of rubbish ive ever heard and it reeks of saffas fave past time the blame game.
henry was an outstanding coach, the most successful coach in the professional era bar nothing with his 85% success rate over 8 years., the longset head coaching tenure in the professional era. this is rellevant, cos its harder to maintain a high success rate over a long period of time, then it is a short one like whites 4 year career.
ABs were a great team no doubt and made his job easier, but as wales head coach, he got the red dragons theirone and only victory in their history against the Boks and he won super rugby title, in an era where the crusaders and brumbies was the elite. unlike white, this adds further weight to henrys coaching credentials.
oh and BTW eloff did more for the lions then mitchell did??? i wasnt aware that eloff had won the currie cup and last time i checked, both had similar spXV records, true or false???

u say that jake white was good coach and fair enough cos each to their own, but his record is not impressive as u allude it to be, his one and only TriNats series victory, was by points differential, as all three teams won 2 games each. Boks series win was fair and square, but IMO he who wins the most tests wins convincingly, like PDV did in 2009, or henry did in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

henrys year to year record,,,
2004 - 81.8%
2005 - 91.7%
2006 - 92.3%
2007 - 83.3%
2008 - 86.7%
2009 - 71.4%
2010 - 92.9%
2011 - 83.3%
this includes 5 out of 8 TriNats series, a whitewash against the british lions and a RWC
head to head against the top 6
12 out of 20 vs Boks
19 out of 24 vs wallabies
9 out of 9 vs england
9 out of 11 vs french
7 out of 7 vs irish
8 out of 8 vs welsh

whites record,,,
1 out of 4 TriNat series and a RWC (where they enjoyed a All Black and wallabyless run)
head to head record against the top 6
3 out of 9 vs All Blacks
6 out of 11 vs wallabies
5 out of 7 vs england
1 out of 4 vs france
2 out of 4 vs ireland
4 out of 4 vs wales

the comparisons between the two are insane, especially the big factor that henrys record was over a period twice that of whites,, where its so much harder to maintain a high success rate.

but to make excuses for his 2006 performance has me lmao. u say his 42% success rate was cos of injuries to players and intense political pressure???  yet he managed back to back win over the ABs and wallabies and break englands strangle hold over u??? o_O
first of all, WTF was england doing with a strangle hold over the Boks in the first place??? and FYI, it took jake white 3 attempts at england before he broke that strangle hold.
secondly, injuries is not an excuse, every team suffers it. when a team suffers injuries, what it shows u is the depth that u have in ur country in replacing those players and more relevant to our blogs, it shows the abilities of ur coach to bring the best out of those players, something that whites 42% ratio in 2006 clearly showed him not doing.

like i said each to their own, but IMO, henry backed by facts and numbers is a superior coach to white in every way shape and form.

Good post card , dont let ou sasucks detract from what you say.
How many times must  one hear that injuries are to be ignored.  One of the really silly things one hears. No country or team has limitless depth. Star players are not repalceable etc.

Another thing take away cheating refs and the abs can halve their success rate. One bad call by a ref and the  abs were booted out the world cup by France to many tears. Ou podv in his book records over 40 errors by BL yet we lost by the slimest margin against Oz.

By the way the reason the abs lost against France was also because ou henry played  a very conservative game - departing from the abs style. Poor judgement as he should have known better.

@beeno1,

thats right, no team has limitless depth, star players are not replaceable, but south africa and NZ have depth that other countries can only dream of, so while those injuries may have hurt the team in 2006, theres still no reason to lose to the likes of, ireland, sorry did i say lose??? sorry, i meant theres no reason to get raped by the likes of ireland. 32-15 FFS could it BE anymore emabrassing, i suppose if the All Blacks were to lose to the irish by such a margin, i too would be making every excuse under the sun to justfy my teams inability to win games that should have done. oh and FYI, here a list of some stars in the Springboks embarrasing loss to the might of ireland where rugby is the 4th most played sport,,,, francois steyn, jean de villiers, bryan habana, juan smith, jhon smit, pierrre spies, cj van der linde, ruan piuenaar, wynard olivier, jp pieterson, but ur right beeno1, how on earth were the Boks ever expected to win against the might of ireland with this mob??? LMAO, :D

as for the loss to france, yes the forward pass led directly to a try that won them the game, but at the end of the day, ABs should never have been in a postion to lose it like that and france were the deserved winners on the day, and unlike the masses in SA, ill be damend before i use the weak excuse "it was the refs fault" cos thats a joke of an excuse. i didnt expect it when NZ used it, and i dont accept it when saffas use it, but given the amount of sh!t that NZers got from using that excuse (myself included, even though i dont subscribe to that refs fault theory), i have as much sympathy for u guys as u did for us.

and u of all people should be the last to talk about tears when getting booted from the RWC, cos u guys have been the biggest crybabies ever. and believe me i love hearing it, it dosent get old to me cos i ALWAYS ROFLMAO, if ur Boks are half as feminine as their fans, expect a lot more losses to come ur way, and no matter how good meyer is, he wont be able to change that.

and please beano1, we lost cos we played conservatively??? i love it when people make sh!t up and act like such knowers.  the reason we lost the final in 2007, was for many factors that snowballed into the forward pass avalanche, we played carter injured, dont why they did cos no one player is bigger then the team, but our reserve flyhalf nick evans also got injured leaving us with no specialist 10 on the field. so if u really believe that injuries shouldnt be ignored, then think about it aye.
another factor was leaving top players out of the match day 22 altogether, cos of what i assume was henrys underestimation of france. but in the end its all redundant, cos france won end of story, and as for ur unsubstantiuated comments about henry playing the conservative game, meh, stick to what u know, cos this is clearly not it.

and what is up with u???, u bag PDV like theres no tomorrow, but he releases a book and all of a sudden his word is gospel??? i love the hypocrisy, but that is testmant to the love u have for the Boks and their inability to replicate the All Blacks success.
on the bright side as long as the Boks have fans like u, the Boks can rest assured that any loss will be everyone elses fault but theirs.

Henry blunders:

He started with the deeply flawed flat attack in his debut season which was slaughtered. New Zealand finished bottom that year and were very lucky to beat the Boks at home - a try in extra time!

2005 they beat the weakest B&I Lions side I can ever remember and again got lucky to beat the Boks with another try in the last minute (Boks lost Pretorius in injury time and had no kicking option to clear pressure at halfback).

2007 the biggest blunder of all. He dropped Mauger from inside centre and messed up the balance of the team and ultimately blew the WC with a poorly timed conditioning program and gameplan as they had a very poor World Cup from start to finish.

In 2009 they were exposed again for being one-dimensional. It was actually a performance that was more reflective of the headless chicken aopproach of de Villiers in 2008! watching them repeatedly run their way out of their 22 was a sad sight.

2011; Henry blew the TNs with another venture with the flat attack that Australia and SA stuffed in two consecutive games.

Hi Guys,

It appears that there are good arguments for and against from all perspectives some pretty compelling and some a bit confusing???

TBH whether we like it or not history and results will judge the success and the record of the individual coaches mentioned. If we looked at what Henry and what Jake achieved it is clear that Henry's record is superior no matter what spin or conclusions we place upon his tenure.

Der does make some very good points though that point out some glaring failiures but as Sas pointed out his tenure was over 8 years and that is a long period to sustain consistency.

Jake's record for a 4 year period even though not as impressive, it still is impressive nonetheless. However ther are also many glaring issues that Jake must take responsibilty for as much as the circumstances he was faced with, and I believe Jake was an organic coach and grew accordingly but the argument could also be given to Henry...afterall he now has the two highest accolades in the world of rugby - RWC Champions and NO#1 ranked team in the world....now that was hard to write - but facts are facts - Believe me in 07 we all lived in euphoria when our beloved Bokkies held that mantle.

I would pose a better comparison would be that of Clive Woodward and Graham Henry as both controlled their national squads for two cycles???

It is interesting that NZ have never had to face the political, internal, historical, controversy and corruption that SA have hade to endure. This alone has made our plight the most challenging against all odds. We as a nation face turmoil and deal with inconsistentcy (administration) and a lack of continuity year in year out. The fact that we have such a great record only highlights how well our coaches have done. Jake had to face more in my eyes then PDV did even though he goes on a fair bit about his tenure was blighted with more challenges than any other SA coach.

The AB's have had to contend with the expectations of their passionate nation and their will to be recognised for a nation so small....I will always respect the Kiwis for a very good reason. They are a small nation and yet produce arguably the best talent year in year out. 05/06 the two best teams in the world were the AB's and the AB reserves however that meant nothing in 07 when they lost.

I visited my brother who is a doctor in small town NZ in the central north Island he supports the Hurricanes but his heart is always back home. He has settled very well and after 6 years he has come to really respect and enjoy what NZ offers him and his family. I visited him last year and we went to two SA RWC games and it was an amazing time. He has some very loyal kiwi friends and I am indebted that they have taken my brother and his family and treated them with great respect. What I saw when I was there was pretty much the same as what I see with our supporters at home...................Two extremely proud, passionate and verbal supporters.

However, if we look at the comparison between Jake and Henry I believe it is hard to compare as it is comparing an apple with an apple, but one in an "apple pie" and the other simply eaten in its "raw" state....I hope that analogy makes sense guys????

Anyway great arguments love reading these posts - keep it guys, as its great to read posts that actually have sound and intelligent arguments.....there are a couple of craazy ones in there but we all like humoru also...hehe

@der aristokrat,

regardless of us not agreeing, i am enjoying the debate, especially as ur arguments have a lot of subtance (unlike ur No1 fan ben10). FYI im a very big fan of SA and Springboks rugby, i watch the currie cup and all saffa teams as well as NZ teams in the spXV religously and im often defending ur clubs on NZ sites which like saru.com, are chock filled with one eyed supporters. IMO the RWC is a joke, a tournament that comes around once every 4 years, but gives it winner the title of world champion which goes unchallenged for the next 4 years. the IRB No1 ranking which the All Blacks have held for almost 80% of the time since its inception, is a far more accurate account as top who is the world champion, cos it takes into account EVERY single rugby test match.
im also a believer that theres no shame in the All Blacks losing to the Boks or the wallabies, even with whitewashes like in 2009, it has happened before and it will happen again. it dosent mean i like it, but i have mad respect for our TriNat brothers (not the aussie spXV clubs though) and thats why i rate beating the Boks in south africa as the ultimate scalp, IMO its better then beating the aussies anywhere and better then winning the RWC.
if i also came across that i dont rate jake white, then that was not my intent. im just saying that henry is a better coach then white. u say im bleating stats without taking them into context, but the reality is, u can look at the stats upsidedown, sideways or standing on ur head, but they still wont change. an aussie commentator said it best when talking about robbie deans, u can take all the good work and solid foundations that the coach has built with the team, but its the results in which u are u judged by.
BTW, what stats on jake white exactly did i take out of context??? cos ur so called blunders on henry (which i will address) were sadly mistaken, but before i do let me quickly address ur other issues.
those utube links, ive seen them all before, icluding the ones on poc0ck and brussow, but that does nothing to educate me on IRB being biased, at best it shows the incompoetence of the referees and nothing else. IRB has two saffas on its board, as do NZ and other main players of rugby, the point is, the evidence while overwhelming on poor reffing (which no one needed to see in rolaind case) it shows ZERO about IRB involvment, so save the davinci code theories for ur countrymen where its all the rave, cos i deal in hard evidence and not he said she said.
also, i take it by ur no comment on mitchell vs eloff, u agree with me???

so called henry blunders,,,
2004 - 81.8%
henrys debut year started with two tests against RWC champions england, where they were smashed 36-3 in the first test and 36-12 in the second (FYI white lost his firs two against england).
yes we lost the TriNats that year and the Boks were deserved winners, but as we both know, the series finished with all three countries winning all their home games, as for that win in the last minute, errrrrrr should i apologise for that???  considering the Boks scored three tries to one, u could also argue that the Boks were at fault for not putting the All blacks away.

2005 - 91.7%
the weakest British lions team??? u sound like a kiwi with that much conviction seeing as how NZ have won 76.3% of their matches with the lions while the Boks have only won 50%. i remeber UK media hyping the lions up to be the strongest ever and blamed mangemnet for the unsuccessful tour to NZ.
but i will humor u mr aristokrat, lest say that was the weakest lions team ever in history (LMAO), how exactly is that henrys blunder???
and cmon bro, pretorius was injured and u lost a good kicking option, that is all part of the rough and tumble package that comes with rugby. tell u what u should though, u should start a petition where teams are only to play other teams if all their players are injury free, and if any player should get injured during the game, it is immediatley stopped, untill that player/s is deemed injury free, lol. and again, pretorius injury another henry blunder???

2007 - 83.3%
i take it that ur convinced that henry didnt blunder in the TriNats??? especially as we beat u in both tests, including the All Blacks 33-6 complete and utter domination of the Boks in the last test.
but ur right, henry did blunder with team selections and i mentioned that earlier when i was repoding to ben10. there was also playing carter injured which IMO is just stupid as it leaves the door open to the exact thing that happened in that quater finals. all this was on henrys head, but a poor RWC from start to finish??? get ur facts straight, we faced italy, portugal, romania and scotland and ran them off the park accumulating total points of 302 for vs 35 against.

2008 - 86.7%
u didnt mention anything, but just wanted to say that the All Blacks beat the Boks in newlands 19-0, 4th time that the All Blacks have held them scoreless and the first time any country has done it on SA soil.

2009 - 71.4%
while it was definately henrys worst year, his 71.4% was still better then whites 3 of his 4 years. wasnt a big fan of the way the All Blacks instent need to run and morne and FDP masterfully controlled that game, it was also pierre , spies best perofrmance ever IMO and i remeber screaming at the TV for someone to tackle him lol.
but while that was henrys worst TriNats outing, he didnt let it wear him down and we progressed on the end of year tour with conviction, unlike the Boks who lost to saracens, leicester (o_O WTF???) france and ireland, while the All Blacks won all their EOYT test matches.

2011 - 83.3%
could u be any more wrong??? the reason we lost the TriNats was simple, henry prioritised the RWC over the TriNats. after the spXV the crusdaers who have the lions share of the All Blacks, were all deemed to have been worn out after a long laboirius season which saw them play no home games due to the earthquake. hence henry and co making the desicion that crusaders and key All Black players would not be travelling to SA to play the Boks. this team was missing, owen franks, richie McCaw, kerean read, dan carter, brad thorn, conrad smith, maa nonu.
this was the blunder on henry and prioritising the RWC and not giving each test the respect it deserves is what cost us, cos IMO our full strength team would have beaten the Boks in PE. my only reasoning is that henry thought even if we lost to the Boks, we could still win it in australia aginst the wallabies, but the wallabies played the first half of that test as if their live depeneded on it and put the All Blacks on the backfoot, we came back to dominate the second half, but the damage was already done, and im not talking about the wallabies first half, im talking about not sending the A team to south africa to lock the TriNats up once and for all.

the reality is, most coaches would kill for stats like these, despite the unsubstantiated claims of blunders. yes henru made mistakes, he is human after all, but his mistakes are outweighed by his success in such a manner, that ur blunder argument is on the verge of a rant. but to best sum it up i will steal and modify a line from u, ur take on henry is a joke.
