This is the best Stormers starting XV for next years season in my opinion.

15.Cheslin Kolbe
14.Juan De Jongh
13.Patrick Howard
12.Damien De Allende
11.Seablo Senatla
10.Demetri Catrakilis
9.Nic Groom
8.Duane Vermeulen
7.Sikhumbuzo Notshe
6.Nizaam Carr
5.Michael Rhodes
4.Eben Etzebeth
3.Oli Kebble
2.Bongi Mbonambi
1.Alistair Vermaak

Overall its a solid starting XV, The 21 year old Notshe is a top class young loosie, plays similar to Carr with Strength and Pace, a great potential player who can also play two positions no8 and flanker like Carr.

The Elusive centre Patrick Howard would do well, he's played very good in the past at outside centre and is in the mould of Jacque Fourie, De Jongh wouldn't be a bad winger as he's got the attributes to play on the wing. Kobus van Wyk could slot in at 14 also.

Most likely Coetzee will not select this starting XV although its worth the discussion. Any thoughts? It's a very great side!

Nice try - but there are a few changes that would be made.   Those include an undertaking by Coetzee that De Allende will play at 13 for the Stormers.   Am afraid that Kebble will be on the bench to replace the no 1 prop and that Malherbe and Cilliers would be the no 3 props.    What about Jean de Villiers and Schalk Burger?   And then there is also Kitshoff coming back from injury.
In the 7's game Senatla is a certainty - is he the same for the 15 man game?   Not so sure - both Van Wyk and Howards seems to be better.   Could be wrong here though.
Barring injuries - the Stormer has a nice squad to select from.  Plenty of cover for each position.

There are some places up for grabs but here is mine:
Kitshofff (One of the best work rates of any prop in SA)
Liebenberg  (If fit still in the top bracket of SA hookers. Otherwise Bongi)Malherbe ( The best tighthead in the country)
(Reserves, Kebble, Vermaak, Cilliers and Harris - if not leaving. Hookers Bongi and Scurra )
Ruan Botha and Etzebeth
(Reserves are Jean Kleyn, Elstadt and Steenkamp?)
Carr, Vermuelen and Schalk Burger. (Schalk Bruger should make the number 7 Bok jersey his own again. Any idea he cant play for 80 minutes is absurd as his stamina is legendary)Reserves, Rhodes, Elstadt, Notshe and possibly Kolisi if he improves.
Scrumhalf Chelsin Kolbe (Reserves Groom, Schreuder)
Flyhalf Coleman/Cat ( Difficult choice)
Centers Jean and Allende(reserves Howard, De Jongh, Taute)
Wings - Number one wing is van wyk. Other wing Senatal/Howard
(I have concerns about Senatla especially after saturday but we shall have to see. De Jongh coud be tried on the wing as could Kolbe)
Fullback Kolbe or Taute if Kolbe doesnt move to scrummie.
There are lots of possibilitiesSo in summary:
Kitshoff, Liebenberg/Bongi, MalherbeBotha & EtzebethCarr Vermulen and BurgerGroom (They will most likely blunder re Kolbe at scrummie)Coleman (He gets his backs moving abit better and is a greater attacking threat. In knock out play go for Cat)
Jean & Allende
Van Wyk, Senatla and Kolbe.
If Senatla struggles bring on Howard
If Jean is not going well Howard.
The fact is that Coetzee really needs to get rotation going so all these players should get a decent run in the Super 16. Form will decide who is going to make it. Injuries will no doubt happen etc. What is apparent is that the Stormers will have a very useful squad and barring bent down under refs and injuries should do very well.
I have a concern re Coetzee's ability to see the wood from the trees but I saw the hand of Smal beefing up the pack against the Bulle. (Rhodes and Elstadt at loose forward). had that not happened the bulle would have overrun us and won the game.
Smal needs to oversee matters and we should get more things right. Much better balance now in WP play and this will hugely benefit the Stormers.

If fDe Villiers is not playing Taute may come into the reckoning at 12.  he was quite good in that position.
I did not want to get roasted - but I think Senatla is a top 7's player - but m hesitant abpout him in the 15 man gme.   He may develop - but will he?  Agree with you about Van Wyk though.
De Jongh as too many problems in defense (he was the secoid worse defender at ceter in Super 15 this  year) and it may even be worse on the wing.   I would rather have a physically stronger wing and the answer could be Howard.
If I have to select a Stormers backline it would be s follows:-
15  Taute,  14  Van Wyk,  13  De Allende,  12  De Villiers,  11 Howard,  19 Catrakillis/ Coleman, 9 Groom.
I would rather have Kolbe, Coleman/Catrakillis and De Jongh on the bench.  The Stormers backline was always lightweight and it counted againstthem in the past - there defense out wide suffered as a result.
Just one question - does Coetzee have a free hand in selections - what is the role of Gert Saml in the background then?

Have no clue as to what Smals exact role is. But obviously he and Coetzee must be in close communication.
Until proven that they cant cut it I would start out with Senatla and Kolbe. Your backline has a lot of pace and is strong and will be huge on defence as well.
We will have to see how Senatla and Kolbe go against strong opposition. I fully agree too many small backline players spells disaster. Groom, Coleman and Kolbe could be more than enough.

Taute at fullback would be a disaster, he doesn't control the game as well as Kolbe at fullback, defensively and tactically. I believe Coetzee will select Kolbe at fullback and Senatla on the wing rightly so, they need to increase their growth at Super Rugby level.

As for Jean De Villiers, the player has been very disappointing this year hence why I'd play him off the bench. It's a logical decision and a easy one at that. The centre combination of De Allende and Howard is fine, I'm sure the chemistry between the two would be spot on.

Jerome your pack is CRAP........a far, far better pack would be

1.Kitshoff 2. Scara 3. Malherbe 4. Etzebeth 5. Ruan Botha 6. Kolisi/Carr 7. Elstadt/Rhodes 8. Vermeulen.

I'd have Taute at 15 with Kolbe replacing de Jongh on the wing and I'd start Kobus v/Wyk at 13

My bench would have the likes of Kebble, Mbonambi, Kleyn, Rhodes, Carr, Schrauder, Coleman, Howard and de Jongh in the mix

I have a problem - we are in desperate in need of a 13 and I think Meyer has put his mind on it that it woud be De Allende.   Coetzee indicated that he has given Meyer an undertaking that De Allende will be played at 13 to give him time to grow into that position.
I am not sure about Howard at 12 though - but he may be the right choice.

Rubbish you're preferences in players are far more irrational. Most of the players you have on the bench should in fact be starting.

These are the substitute players you named:
*Michael Rhodes (A quality loose forward who occasionally plays out a lock, his speciality is strong ball carrying and is decent in lineouts, overall he is for useful than Ruan Botha at lock.

*Patrick Howard ( Definitely one of the best backline players to come out the province and has been talked about frequently as a potential bok player in the future, he's got good strength and pace, he breaks the line quite often. Why leave him out?

*Nizaam Carr ( Awarded WP Player of the year and has been promising year in and year out for WP and Stormers, he is a integral part of the forwards, a crucial first choice player. Why leave him out?

* Bongi Mbonambi ( The new transfer this year is a very versatile hooker, Mbonambi is faster and stronger than Scarra Ntubeni from what I've seen and does all the basics well from what a hooker is required to do.)

If anything it shows you're lack of knowledge on the Stormers players, you would have to be have one stupid brain to not select the players I've named above who you regard as substitute players. You don't understand the value of the players and what they can do. Get real!

Jerome, you have to be a complete and utter idiot to select useless Vermaak over Kitshoff, but best of all Kebble a loosehead over Malherbe at 3.

Not to mention a flank in Rhodes at lock over quality young locks like Kleyn and Botha

You are bloody clueless....your side smacks of rugby ignorance of the highest order.

Prejudicial Dave....this is about the best you could come up with about Kolbe, who you had in your 4th SA team

September 24, 2014, 13:57:44

Kolbe is a great little player but test rugby would be a step too far physically for him as a 15. I would only consider him at wing or potentially 9 if he has a pass on him. Would I select him for the Boks.......no I would probably not

Game over.

Every player has their shortcomings. With the rampant, mobile Lions forwards the reason you cant have a 70kg fullback might well become painfully apparent this coming weekend. Sort of similar to how the Sharks monstered Kolbe last year.

Or Kolbe and Senatla could shred them....both scenarios are plausible. Personally I think we will be lucky to dodge the Lions superiority at scrum time and in the loosies.

Lets face it - the 'little' guys are going to get smashed occasionally but if we put stigma aside the evaluate the facts, it probably doesn't happen as often as what hype would like to suggest.

With Gio Aplon I started to get legitimately worried about him with the amount of times he was getting knocked out on the field at one stage. I am not sure being a quivering mass in a wheelchair at 50 years old is worth it.

Put it this way - it might not be as easy or happen as frequently that a smaller player gets dominated as suggested but it certainly can be said that it is a little more dangerous for them on a rugby field.

I got you Dave....of course he doesn't meet your criteria. OOm to be honest I have no idea what the team should be. It's not a pressing issue at this stage, we have a CC final a new Bok squad and a YE tour which are more top of mind. But if pressed I hope we can sell Taute back up north,  that seems like a good plan.

You couldn't answer the simple questions, why leave out the players you consider bench players particularly Patrick Howard and Nizaam Carr? I stated a brief segment of why the 4 players should start and why they are superior to the others but you can't reply why they are not.

I am no expert as far as props are concerned I must admit. I am a fan of Steven Kitshoff of course, he'd be in my starting XV if he wasn't injured although I am curious to know how Alistair Vermaak would perform in Super Rugby.

Saff In addition here is 2 video links that showcases Michael Rhodes highlights in Lions and Stormers. The player is way more versatile than Ruan Botha as a lock from what I've seen. Michael Rhodes is stronger with ball in hand and is defensively very good, not to mention he is useful in lineouts when he is played at lock. Another player you listed on the bench. You are the one that is clueless.

It's true however its all part of the experience playing rugby, players overcome certain obstacles and learn from mistakes which Rhodes has done. The player has matured this season and is promising. The 2 videos links I posted above shows how effective he really is in different aspects of the game, Ball carrying, Defence and Lineout Takes.

Back to the Cheslin Kolbe discussion - He has been the best fullback by a mile in the Currie Cup this year, the player is such a compete fullback that is good under pressure. The doubters are putting in the weight card saying he's too small for Super Rugby but it has been proven that players don't need to be 100kg's in order to be effective, Tim nanai Williams is around the same weight and has become well known at the Chiefs, having said that I think his weight is fine, body physique and strength is fine also. I'm sure he'll do well in Super Rugby.

You obviously are one of the doubters that prefer Taute over Kolbe as seen in this thread. Taute is way behind Kolbe in terms of abilities, in attacking, defence, tactical kicking and other aspects. Can you elaborate more into detail as to why Taute is more preferable?? I don't understand.

From what I have seen Taute played better at 12 than he did at full back.   I have no problem wi Kolbe at full back - but he may have problems in Super 15 in view of his size. He is likely to eb their first choice full back in any event.
Kolbe on his own may not be a problem - but adding in two other small players - Senatla and De Jongh - could have real defensive problems in the backline.
