He seemed more alert, did things with a bit more pace and his cross kick for Willemse was spot on. That said the midfield was dominated by Kerevi and his 101 metres. He was the the man wrenched the game away, along with young McDermott who exposed the Stormers around the fringes. The South African teams still haven't made the leap to offloading.....much is made of passing, but it's the backup runner that simply isn't there, time and again. Marais seems to have a groin issue, but heis an absolute zero even when healthy. Kolisi was better but is still blown off the ball far too easily. Willemse looks dangerous, but makes school boy mistakes. Malherbe is at best solid in the scrums he never dominates. Coetzee had a good game and is a strong addition, but he defused some good Stormers attacks with mistakes. The Stormers could have won all three of these road games, but the pure intent is not there. Some player has to lift this team....but where is that player.

Kitshoff, Bongi, Eben, Psdt, Kolisi and and and...

Apparently Steph and Eben didn't play but it makes no difference.

They've got a lot of supposed big names but it's been yonks since any of them put in a performance worthy of their rep.

And it's scary to think that the Bok pack is predominantly built around these guys.

These are the test level players that are as ordinary as can be at SR level.

PSDT aside, nothing out of the ordinary really.

For me, PSDT and Kitshoff are the only ones currently deserving of a starting spot in June.

Stephanie has tried hardest.....but without much to show for it. He needs to play at lock next to Eben who is the one player who has impacted a few games.

Plum, our poor lot beat the Sharks in Durbs...something your lot can't even manage at hime.

Jokes aside, our full pack rarely gets dominated. We have poor management at the top, we've got a poor coach, the director of rugby is prevented from doing his job...and we are basically bankrupt.

PS, stop your Eben bashing

Draad

That's true.

Just wish they had better spirit. What I saw from the Sharks last night, that's the energy and synergy that would be great to see from all our teams.

Sure, I'm a Lions fan but the bigger picture means a whole lot more to me. I was actually cheering for the Sharks yesterday. AM, Bosche, DDP, Mapimpi, all those guys. That's what they are capable off and I want it all dude. They way they attacked the ball on the ground...awesome. Territorial play, just as good.

When you watch varsity ball, their backs function as a cohesive unit much better than our SR sides much too often. It's baffling.

Sure defensive tactics at the top are more defined. But where are the support runners, why the plethora of unforced errors, why the slow ruck clearouts and why the poor decision making?

Teams just seem to forget that there are things you can do which the opposition have no control over. It's the old "control the controllable" cliche.

Teams that are full of the "best" players in SA. They should have their controllables down 100%. But when you watch game after game, you realise that they don't. Not even close. And there no eexcuse for it.

When you add those unnecessary errors to the errors forced on them by good play from the opposition, and then look at how small the margin is very often, it's easy to arrive at the conclusion that they'd win a lot more if they just cut out the unforced nonsense.

And its guys like Eben, PSDT, Kitshoff(not so much), De Allende, Bongi and others that one has to look to.

As a coach, it would be perfectly reasonable to say "You guys are supposedly the best, why the fuck are you making mistakes that you've known not to make since high school?"

You could ask De Allende why he is not running off his outside centres shoulder at every single opportunity instead of only rarely. Why at his pace he still thinks running laterally is any sort of advantage to him or his team.

You could ask Eben why he still loses so many balls in tackles. Why his support play is so poor, Even when compared to other local locks. Why he fades so drastically so often instead of bossing proceedings at key moments like. Why he still reads the game just as he did when he first turned pro.

Going through the Stormers, and most of our other teams you could ask similar basic questions about controllables to many of our supposed best players. And for the most part, there aren't really many good excuses for it.

A great example is Dyanti jumping to catch a high ball when nobody was within 40m of him? The guy is a Bok wing FFS? Jumping is purely to gain aerial advantage when necessary. The rest of the time it serves ZERO purpose. He ended up dropping the ball.

Maybe we need to start admitting that our general standard is lacking. We want to play world class rugby but we're making mistakes that would drive my U14 coach insane. Unforced and stupid mistakes. Every week.

De Allende has not been as bad as some have thought.

I wonder when folks will fully take on board the fact that if the wee abs back line had been coached in teams in SA they wouldn't function either. Rugby is a team game and our backlines don't operate propey as a unit and seldom get the lose forward support they should. Again a coaching issue.

All this is cleay seen by the way the backs keep going to ground, the poor passing and handling skills, few offload, support players not running good lines or even being on hand to take a pass.

Selection wise small little wings like Seargel are picked when it is very apparent he has no hope of competing  at the top level.

The stunning thing to me is that they don't need to reinvent the wheel. Just watch what nz and even Oz teams do!!!!

One does sense an effort is being made, poor though it is, to get up to speed but it's taking far to long.

Hell, we're still having the same debate and making the same observations and comments since re-admission.

Plum, I feel your pain...and I also don't understand why the Sharks can play the way they played last night and like fools the next week. WP played like pansies against the Bools, played like men against the Canes and the Sharks...the loss today and against the Blues were unfortunate. We needed the luck going our way in at least 2 of those losses... damn!

PS, what a choke by Da Bools.

Damian runs laterally because he needs space to be more effective. He lacks upper body strength, and thus struggles to assert himself as a direct runner. This has been a problem at 12. He is a more natural 13, but he cannot read play well enough to play in the most difficult defensive position on the field. He cannot read play period. He has been adding the chip more liberally to his game which isn't surprising, as passing isn't going to work. The saddest thing of all is that the Damian we saw in 2018 was the best and most complete version of himself to date. In fact, there was a clear turning point from 2015 SR to the RC and then the World Cup. Three distinct phases of progression. Still not good enough.

@Herr Draht: The Sharks dominated the Lions because they are a physically inferior side. When the Sharks encounter another strong pack, they become an uncoordinated mess. They can't control their possession, leaving the backs to work on the back foot, struggling for a platform to strike from. This has been very frustrating, as the Sharks have the best backline in SA.

Probably why the Bools beat them too then. The Bools seem to have a better pack this year.
