Bismarck to captain Sharks
  • 16 Jan 2014
 93  2

Bismarck du Plessis has been appointed Sharks captain

Bismarck du Plessis will lead the Sharks in this year's Super Rugby tournament.

Odwa Ndungane, Jean Deysel and Pat Lambie have all been appointed as vice-captains.

'There is no doubt in my mind he’s a freak, one of the best players in the world, the best hooker in the world,' said Sharks coach Jake White of Du Plessis.

'What I respect is that he could go anywhere in the world and earn five times what he is now and still get the guarantee from Heyneke Meyer about being a Springbok in the next World Cup. He’s chosen to stay here and if that doesn’t show people he’s dedicated to the Sharks then we’re on a different page. It’s not a reward for that, but it shows he is genuine.

'Everyone knows how good he is. I’m hoping that this role of captaincy, but more importantly, with the change in environment we are creating and the people we are putting around him, we will really upskill him in terms of the things he is weak at. He knows what his limitations are, even in terms of how he’s going to be a captain.'

White also delivered some sympathetic words for former captain Keegan Daniel, but was confident in his selection of Du Plessis.

'Keegan will probably be a bit disappointed, that’s natural, he’s been a good captain. The thinking is for me to have a stamp of what I think is important for us as a group. The dynamics in the group are changing, there are some new guys who have joined the squad.

'I’ve worked with Bismarck before, he is a winner and has enormous presence in rugby. It’s not about individuals but what we do as a group.'

The Sharks are set to play a pre-season friendly against English club Saracens on 25 January at Allianz Park in London.

Is Carter on Sabbatical the whole SuperXV? He must be relieved if he is. Although Adidas are considering dropping Carter from his underpants sponsorship and rightly so.

You are 100% correct -  the Cowardly Carter will do anything to be out of rugby for at least six months on a sabbatical so as to avoid playing any SA team -also the Sharks.

I think that he is  hoping that a six month absence will reduce the fear factor to such a degree that he does not shit himself in the change rooms.  What a palooka!!!!

No, he will be fine - as the best hooker in the game, I am more than happy to see a good few years out of him still.

Just because I prefer the younger players, does not mean I would discard class acts like Habana, Beast, Bismark and Strauss

Sharkies getting a bit desperate chosing the dirtiest player in world rugby to captain their side are'nt they?

Talk about fat and useless . Only good for half agame before he's subbed for Strauss.

Or should i say only good for twenty minutes then he's yellow carded for being a filthy little shit. LOL Costing his team the game many a time through superiority of numbers he's a great choice.

And such a great role model for up and coming junior players...You can jump on players with your boots with impunity no worries mate.

Eye gouging is totally acceptable also not to mention throwing your elbow at someones throat.

What an entertainer . I see they screened the Sharkies brains recently with suprising results....

Blackadder

Don't point fingers  - the dirtiest player by a mile is Nonu - followed by Jaws.  The latest photo of Jaws and Du Toit was clear - he was trying to scratch Du Toit's eyes out but his feeble effort was pushed aside by Du Toit.

I would lay a bet - Jaws and Nonu would get more yellow cards than any SA player.

Your best hooker in any NZ franchise is worth less than the worst SA hooker in any franchise.

Jake must surely be having a laugh making the thug Bismarck captain!

You don't suddenly make a 30 year old captain unless you are desperate!! Bismarck has never shown any leadership qualities on the field unlike JDV and Sir Ritchie.....good captains are born and not manufactured.

Kirwan tried it last year with Ali Williams; same sort of loose cannon as Bismarck and it was a dismal failure.

Can't wait until the new captain gets his first red card whilst leading by example!!

LOL!    I would be interested to hear what attributes Bissy apparently possesses that helped Jake determine his suitability as a captain. Of all the possible character traits we could justifiably link to the great Bismark du Plessis, maturity and intelligence would not be amongst them.

One would hope that Jakes decision wasn't solely premised on Bismarcks reputation as the worlds best hooker.  Even Jake, the great pretender, would concede that there are many requisite attributes required of a capable leader beyond Bissys "hooking" abilities.  So what could have persuaded Jake to select Bissy as his teams inspirational leader?

I suspect Jake has cannily identified Bissy's immaturity as a serious liability and he is hoping the captaincy position will help moderate his tendency towards juvenile and petulant outbursts.  Jakes misplaced attempts to rein in Bissys embarrassing tantrums may also lead to some unwelcome side effects.

The desire to conform to the expectations of a respectable captain might convince Bissy to curtail his naturally pugnacious and excessively aggressive approach. This could prompt him to overcompensate, severely limiting his advantage as the best hooker on the field. Also, the distractions and added responsibilities that come with the captaincy role might overwhelm poor Bissy, a man who has never come across as particularly sharp or gifted (more slow and dimwitted). Nor does he appear to possess the communication skills required of the modern rugby captain.

This is a ludicrous move by Jake "the pretender" with no significant benefit other than the unlikely possibility that the responsibility could expedite Bissys maturation process resulting in a more stable, well hinged, team player. The Sharks would be far better served by giving the responsibility to someone else thus freeing up the Sharks greatest asset to ply his trade unhindered.

Why is it that this thug only ever tries to act tough when the "target" of his menacing attacks are on their backs and incapable of properly defending themselves? There's no denying that this prat is a very good hooker but beyond that he lacks character and integrity and is not the kind of person I would want my kids to emulate and/or admire . It still shocks me how Bissys zealous aggression and thuggery is highly regarded and revered by the Saffa fanboys. The guy is a chop.

The New Zealand supporters must be pissing themselves and they shout murder about Du Plessis as a result.

There first objection to Bismarck is based on "intelligence".    While Bismarck is not on the same level as Jannie - who is a qualified medical doctor - Bismarck has a B.Com degree.   How many New Zealand player have degrees one wonders?

Seondly they are apparently not aware that Bismarck has been the Springbok vice captain since 2012 - showing that he has leadership capacity.   Being the Springbok vice captain   definitely qualifies him for selection as Sharks captain.

Then there is the squeal about Bismarck being fat and lazy.  And that he cannot play for the full match - because he is subbed by Strauss.   What a joke that one.   Both are regarded as the top two hookers in World Rugby - why not alternate them in tests or subbed them?

The biggest scream is about dirty play.   The worst incident ever was when Hore put an opposition player in hospital - no complaint about that and not a whisper by Hansen as a result.   Then a big play is made about Bismarck's legal tackle on Carter in the  Eden Park test - which was ruled as illegal by the referee and later nullified by the IRB.

As a hooker Bismarck is a very hard player - with a really negligible record for yellow cards - he never had a red card as per IRB records.   The problem is they fear the player and is trying their utmost to discredit him - what a load of rubbish is being spouted on this Board as a result.

Sorry - my AB and NZ friends - you are barking up the wrong tree here.

Surely there are better candidates than Bismarck, he needs to keep his head down and concentrate on his game. This has been tried before and didn't work.

@Wardad: You are quite ignorant. South Africans quite viciously castigate their own players. Schalk was the most hated player in South Africa in 2009! But New Zealand? The multiple spear tackles? The throat slams? The stamping, punching? Despite repeated video evidence New Zealanders, in the majority, DENY ALL illegal activity. The fact of the matter is that Islanders are by far the dirtiest players in the world and New Zealand are guilty of more dirty play than South Africa. It's in fact rather one-sided. Who has South Africa got to compare with Nonu, So'oialo, Collins, Heymans, Hore, Rocokoco, McCaw? Nobody. Bismarck, the dirtiest Bok of the modern era can't even compare, his acts being too far and few between. But alas, we shall bow down to New Zealand. With such arrogance one could be forgiven for thinking this little blott on the globe was the United States in all it's past glory, or perhaps more, Atlantis itself! But all this falls on congested ears. The proud cannot be taught, and will thus remain forever in ignorance. Good luck to you and your chosen path, you will surely need it.

Does it really? An eye gouge in 2003, clearing a ruck with force in 2009 (legal, but banned none-the-less), a headbutt in 2010, one knee drop against France in 2005. Bakkies reputation is an over-bloated load of nonsense. Granted he loves the tag, but it has little substance. Nonu literally got through more foul play in last years Super rugby campaign than Bakkies did in his entire career to date. So lets stick to reality shall we?

I am sorry if I upset anyone - but I do not like unfounded and insulting allegations against players.   The allegations of lack of intelligence on the part of Du Plessis is totally unjustified.

The story about dirty play is also really not substantiated by facts.   Allegations are many - facts are few.   I can remember only one yellow card against Bismarck over the last 3 years.   I doubt very much whether there are more.  Fact is he pit in a hard legal tackle on Carter - which makes him a pariah amongst the NZ rugby supporters.

I believe we can taunt players about there performances - but personal attacks is really off-target.

If you ask AB and other New Zealand players about Bismarck you will find a lot of respect for his abilities amongst them.   For instance I noticed that when he came off during the Barbarians game he was chatting away with Piutau like they were the best of friends.

Lets try and keep the situation real when it comes to discussion of players.

@Cloudy. This is  Botha's so-called resume in 12 years of international rugby:

2003. Accused of eye-gouging. That was dismissed but he was still suspended for "attacking the face".

Six years later, in 2009 for "striking" Phil Waugh. This was the "strike":

2009 Also saw the infamous Adam Jones incident.

The next two incidents was the one on Gio Aplon and the stupid one on Jimmy7 Cowan in 2010. No SA supporter that I know has condoned the last two. Not even Bulls supporters.

He then received a yellow card when he retaliated, after being punched while lying on his back, at the beginning of last year. He again received a yellow card a few weeks ago after being punched himself again, IIRC.

That is six yellow cards in 54 games for Toulon, 50 for the Blue Bulls, 95 for the Bulls and 78 tests. That is a six cards out of a total of 277 games.

My favourite example of boks as a team acting like thugs is the 92 flogging at Twickenham with bok Captain Krige leading by example ! Streuli covered himself in merde by pointing at 2 of his concussed players and famously saying "do you think we knocked ourselves out !?" not realising that Woodward had extra footage showing Krige aiming at an English player missing and knocking out his own boy ! The game is utterly replete with this garbage from the boks ,check it out .
Mike I was referring to sum-stew who seems to think Maccaw is guilty of foul play ? What did Maccaw hurt greyling [ a small not too smart fish ] in some bizzarre fashion ?

Least you can rain on their parade eh Cloudy ? You should check out the Twickers game I mentioned [it was 2002 ] ,the bok Captain Krige in 4 minutes used more foul plays than the ABS in 40 years ! and the rest of the team was in on it too ! absolutely disgusting and worse still Krige was skiting about how he was going to rough the Poms up before the game !Mind you no ABS team has ever lost by I think it was 53-3 ? the shame just blew them outta their tiny wee minds and they lost it big time !

That was the game when the referee - I believe O'Brein - a Kiwi referee of ill- repute - red-carded a Springbok player for a so-called late tackle on Wilkinson in a deliberate effort to cook the match.   That same O'Brein was caught out sending e-mails to encourage them to ref SA teams out of the Super 15,   O'Brein was later the IRB referee panel head and vanished into thin air subsequently after being caught out crooking - if my memory serves me correctly.

There is a difference between Poite and O'Brein.   Poite was incompetent - O'Brein and  Bryce Lawrence were crooked referees trying to cook match outcomes.

N o credit to New Zealand's image - that one.

January 17, 2014, 12:02:51 Ok ceradyne thanks for the stats.  So ma'a has played 133 super games and 85 test caps and he's 31 years old.  He has another 3 years to catch up to Bakkies, as we are comparing the two, I could only find one yellow card for Nonu but because I am a cloudy-headed female and apparently knows absolute zilch about rugby....I could be wrong but I am sure someone will correct me because they always do.

The big difference is that Nonu is seen shoulder charging and high-tackling in  almost every game that he plays without getting sanctioned and then fat Hansen comes  up with the  most feeble excuses that you can think of. Much has been made of Bismarck's elbow charge and while I am in no way condoning it, one of the Franks props is also regularly seen tackling head-first like he did in the game between the Sharks and the Crusaders at Twickenham without any sanction either. As far as Bismarck's elbow charge is concerned, you will recall that I said that it was illegal and was rightfully sanctioned.

Mike what the hell are you dribbling about ? a kiwi is responsible for the boks disgusting display in the 2003 twckenham game ? You have no credibility left on this subject ,I cannot fathom how you condone the most blatant and disgraceful thuggishness in any game by the boks full stop ! So a bok player gets red carded [ and I have just watched the game again in full ,the barrage of late tackles on Wilco in particular was horrendous] and you see this as justification for krieg and Labuschagne and others to play in the filthiest manner possible ? You have deffo lost the plot and it illustrates what I mean about  bok fans finding anything they can to justify their grubbiness ,I suggest you have a read about the match or better still watch it ,disgraceful...
In Kriges book " Right place wrong time  " he agrees with Paddy O'Brien who after watching the replay was stunned at what went on behind his back From the Boks and said he should have red carded at least 5 more boks !,and Krige to his credit agrees !!! ,so Mike you may need to revisit that game it may be an eye opener .A read of Kriges assesment of that game might help too...unbeleivable where he states that he in his own words prior to the game "deliberately went out to hurt the English " and as the game itself went on the red mist descended and he decided to take as many down with him as possible [ one of whom was his own fly half ] and after the match was worried that he had ended one English players career after he deliberately hit him in the neck .
