Bismarck du Plessis wanted 'to hurt' Dan Carter, says older brother Date September 26, 2013

Georgina Robinson

Rugby Reporter

Rampaging bull: Springboks hooker Bismarck du Plessis.

Rampaging Springboks hooker Bismarck du Plessis may not be starting against the Wallabies this weekend but he will still want to "hurt" them.

Du Plessis' older brother Jannie, who will start at tighthead prop this Saturday, warned that his hooking sibling had a point to prove after being controversially red-carded against the All Blacks in Auckland last week.

"I know that if he gets two minutes he'll fire, because after 80 minutes against the All Blacks he felt responsible for letting the team down," du Plessis said.

Bismarck Du Plessis of South Africa was given a yellow card for this tackle on Dan Carter.

"I know he never intended to injure somebody and he never intended to be malicious, but he did intend to hurt him, if I can say that." (Now the truth is at last out - YES WE KNOW Doctor)

The red card was later withdrawn against Bismarck du Plessis after one of his two yellow-card offences - a tackled on Dan Carter - was ruled to be within the laws of the game.

But the second offence, an elbow in the throat of All Blacks back rower Liam Messam, was upheld.

Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer has maintained the selection of Adriaan Strauss at No.2 on the weekend, relegating du Plessis to the bench, was his stated intention from the start of the Rugby Championship and had nothing to do with last week's incidents.

But Jannie du Plessis said his brother was still hurting almost a week after the All Blacks match and would play "out of his skin" if given the opportunity off the bench against the Wallabies.

"We do play a physical sport, you want to impose yourself physically on your opponent, but I don't think there was any malice in it and I don't think it was anything sinister," he said.

"Getting red carded, I know he really feels responsible for not only letting the team down but the whole of South Africa, because we knew how important that game was for us.

"From his point of view, he would really want to come on and play out of his skin and really make a big difference."

The veteran prop and qualified doctor will play his 50th Test match at Newlands. The Springboks are running second to New Zealand on the Rugby Championship ladder and need a bonus-point win this weekend to stay in touch ahead of the deciding match in Johannesburg next week.

He said he expected Australia to hit their stride at set piece at some point after struggling to adapt to the new laws, which came in for the Rugby Championship.

"It's happened to us in the past as well, in 2009 our pack were more or less the same people, people I really respect and really rate, but we struggled," du Plessis said.

"I recall a game against Leicester where we really got smashed. The guys who played that day were really capable players, so sometimes you just need the flow or the rhythm and the pack needs to play together.

"I think it's just a few things they have to tweak and they know what to work on and they'll probably sort it out."

South Africa: Zane Kirchner; Willie le Roux, JJ Engelbrecht, Jean de Villiers (capt), Bryan Habana; Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez; Duane Vermeulen, Willem Alberts, Francois Louw; Flip van der Merwe, Eben Etzebeth; Jannie du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, Tendai Mtawarira. Reserves: Bismarck du Plessis, Gurthro Steenkamp, Coenie Oosthuizen, Juandre Kruger, Siya Kolisi, Ruan Pienaar, Patrick Lambie, Jan Serfontein

No surprise there for me. Of course taking out Dan doesn't mean a win for opposition these days

What crap is this?   You highlight something and left out the most essential part of the sentence - namely that he never intended to injure Carter.   A hard tackle like Bismarck did  can hurt a player without injuring him - making any player concerned more careful insofar as the rest of the game is concerned.

Your weird talk about the whole incident is indeed rubbish.  It happened nearly two weeks ago and all your allegations have been debunked before.   The Springboks played more than 50 minutes without a player and lost badly and no further story will only serve to try and cause problems where there should be none.

Any talk in the NZ change room without substance is merely talk - there could be no reason to think that it was anything more than conjecture.

Hi Cloudy, I am having fun with the wife on this trip - even got some work done. We are on a high speed train from Paris to Brussels after celebrating wife's birthday yesterday. All boxes checked for "maintaining marital bliss" - main point being I remembered her birthday Hope all is well with you, sounds like  your brother is a avid rugby fan too. Having more than one in the family must crank up the adrenalin, lol
The game between Boks & oz should be good. Pressure on oz & if the get some quick points they may force Boks into open rugby. Then we will see if the Boks can play more than one game plan. Will be good for their development. I will support Boks (but not as far as bonus points , lol

ntanga and Mike, of course I can read English - can you? although I have my doubts! The article is written by Georgina Robinson and it does sound like Bismarck did confess his evil intent to close family members - the cat is out of the bag so to speak!
It does sound Mike like you disagree with any Journalist who is reporting objectively on issues!

Tactics and support, not thuggish play, the key to good rugby Date September 28, 2013

Support: Ewen McKenzie could do a lot worse than have Laurie Fisher on his staff. Photo: Getty Images

WHEN I noted last week that the Springboks have accumulated 79 yellow cards since the card system began, many of them for thuggish play and twice as many cards as the Wallabies, the team's supporters went mad.

Their trolls ranged from the weird ('… Your biased and twisted view of South Africans is very clear for everyone to see. It borders on severe prejudice [other minorities would actually call it racism but I won't go there] … stick to soccer mate - it's clearly your game.') to the deranged ('Stop acting the c---, Spiros. Get a life or f--- off. And your latest mug shot makes you like you're wearing a cheap wig - I'd get it changed if I were you').

An important article written for SA SuperSport website by Brendan Nel, the voice of the Afrikaans rugby polity, makes it clear that the supporters are in a different space on the thuggery issue to that of the team's coach, Heyneke Meyer.

Nel writes: 'The Boks have been their own worst enemies and have deserved the tag of a brutal, bully team at times, one that goes outside the bounds of the law when they don't get their way.'

Meyer, Nel explains, has appointed Chean Roux as a technical analyst to work out how the Springboks can make 'an inward change' to their thuggish approach to the game.

Somehow I knew ol Homowa would bring this horseshit to the board … sniveling all the way … with snotty nose and a trembling lower lip to boot.

If Carter can’t take it he should rather go do something else.

And if Homowa gets too emotional with all the violence and aggression and physicality of rugby, perhaps he should rather take his little powder puff and pom poms and go support the local synchronized swimming team.

What a baby!!!!

I did not disagree with the article - I merely said that you distorted the whole impact of what was said completely.   It is a fact of life that a hard tackle can hurt a player - that does not mean that it is the same as cause injury to a player.    Any hard tackle could and would hurt a player - after all they are not made of steel.   A hurt player may be more careful if he stays on the field of play and may do things differently - by being more careful to avoid another hard tackle - later in the game.

Please get into you head - the tackle of Carter by Bismarck was a legal tackle and he was not off-side.   That was the reason for the expulsion of the Red card by the IRB.   Furthermore Carter said the injury resulted from him falling awkwardly - not from the tackle  itself .   The only one who discredited himself was Read in lying to the referee by his "no arms" comment

Mozzie, r u still sore after our Team NZ loss? Get over it Mozzie, we already did!
Unclean...enough said
Mike, don't twist Jannie's words! Jannie said Bismarck intended to hurt Carter - I take Jannie's word for it because - he is a close family member, he is Bok, he is a doctor! and you should to Mike. Bismarck wasn't trying to win the ball to set up the next phase of play to score a try, to gain a penalty from Carter holding on to the ball infront of the sticks! No, he wanted to hurt Carter.
Let's ask Jannie again:
hakwa: "so Doctor Jannie, in your professional opinion as a Doctor, a Bok and close family member, what was your brother's intention in the tackle of Dan Carter?"
Doctor Jannie: "well hakwa, I must commend you for following our progress closely for many years and for your objective views (unlike Beano) but but he did intend to hurt him, if I can say that."
No further questions your honour!

So nobody may tackle Carter because he may get hurt in the process?   That is the crux of the matter.   Stop whining and accept the matter as happened.   What about the tackles of Retallick and Nonu - both highly illegal and dangerous ?   Nobody is moaning about that - because the tackled players did not put in a Hollywood act.   So please forget about the Biswmark one.

Ha ha Hakwa you taking a statement made in english by an afrikaans bloke and reading what you want.
Intending to injure is flying into a players neck illegally. Its not our fault Carter can not take a tackle anymore. If the AB's want to continue being soft fucks, quit the game altogether. Your 30+ year old boys bones are brittle now. Wee McCaw also limped off after having a guy fall on him...Younger bones can take the pressure.
Dont write shit up like an oke knew he was going to hurt a bloke with a legal tackle. Shows your rugby ignorance. Have you ever played this game??
The only intention in that game was the ref to fuck it up and make sure the AB's win...Embarrasing. Scraping home against 14 men!

yes, Boklogic, funny enough, I started on the wings and graduated to Number 2!
Come on boys, admit it, Bismarck wanted to hurt Carter! Heck, if I was Bismarck, I would want to hurt Carter legally or illegaly.
Your attempts at trying to play down his intent by trying to focus on the legality of the tackle does not take away the fact that his intent was to hurt him.
Look guys, don't rush to man up and confess - if you don't mind, please confess in order of the list below to avoid the rush

Hey Steinlager.
"DC should have seen him coming"
and there lies the mystery - When Aaron Smith passed the ball to Carter, where was Bismarck? I believe Bismarck was standing next to Carter on his blind spot and Carter's body obstructed the view of Bismarck next to him otherwise Aaron Smith would not have passed him the ball!

"flogging a dead horse" It will stop after Ellis Park!

Hakwa, even if Bismarck was sitting on Dan's shoulders, he was well within his right. Offside is not in the question due to there being no offside line.
Unlike McCaw and co. the Boks know the rules and Bismarck did fucken superbly to put a shot on Carter. Even if he did not injure Carter, he certainly did good by his team because Carter would have been well shaken up and his nice Jockey tighty whitey underpants that he models would have been a brown write off after that play!
Look on the brightside, Barrett came on. Carter may have been well off his game and making sure he does not get anywhere near our forwards again.
In the heat of battle, every player wants to "injure" every opposition player they tackle. Its when they do it illegally that it becomes malicious intent and just nasty. The laws around what is legal and whats not are there to make the game safer. The fact that Bizzy was well within the laws of the game is testament to his intent to play hard rugger and nothing more. Injuries will happen in a collision sport. Its up to the players and conditioning coaches to make sure themselves and their players are in peak physical condition to be able to take these legal but hard hits. Carter knew what to expect the minute he became a professional rugby player. Just like McCaw, his old bones are brittling up.

Boklogic I was having a conversation with Steinlager about the science of why an opposition might be missing from your peripheral vision and also your half back's peripheral vision. We might even have to Test Aaron Smith for colour blindness as maybe he was trying to pass to Bismarck and Carter got in the way!
