Blues to start Marshall at 10  Jan 22,2014 Written by: SARugby.com Editor

Blues coach Sir John Kirwan says Rugby League convert Benji Marshall is likely to wear the number ten jersey in Super Rugby.

The Blues start their pre-season against the Hurricanes next weekend and Kirwan has said that the coaching staff are now likely to hand the 28-year-old the pivot role despite his lack of experience in the 15-man code.

Although Kirwan has openly spoken of his belief that the former Wests Tigers playmaker could develop into a world-class 10, when Marshall first made the move to Auckland the Blues had thoughts of using him as a full-back to give him time to adapt.

Kirwan also said the side will announce their replacement for injured lock Culum Retallick this week.

i havent been able to track too much info on this, but this is the right move.

all talks about his easing into rugby as a 15 was always retarded IMO, especially with the options the blues have with their outsidebacks already.

flyhalf is where benji gave the most success, and it was an area of concern for the blues in 2014.

benjis an old man by player standards, and he hasnt reached the heights he did a few years back when he was the worlds best league player, but hes still benji marshall.

with weepu helping guiding him inside, and nonu guiding him on his outside, im starting to believe were going to see some real good rugby from benji, :o)

Hi Cruz, nice to see you back on here & yes the Chiefs look good but so do the Blues and Saders. Canes are always fun to watch & the Highlanders have got to be improved, I can't believe how things unraveled last year for them last year.
Hope all is well with you and your family. Can't wait for s15 kickoff, kiwi teams are gong to kick some butt, lol

 Hello everybody, here again after the "rugby holiday". Hope everybody is fine, can see some of you are, naru, justwin, cloudy, cruz...

I have my doubts about this, not about playing Marshall at 10 (I've never seen him playing so cannot say about it) but on how they manage the way he enter into the Super Rugby.
If I well understood "Benji Marshall is likely to wear the number ten jersey in Super Rugby" means that they are going to start the matches  with him. This could be a big mistake. For what I saw of League, and I just saw a couple of entire rugby league games during the recent WC, there is a lot much pressure on defense in the union code. Marshall, like everybody, like even Folau who adapted very quickly and very well, needs a time to adapt. If he starts the comp at 10, as a starter, he will be targeted by the rival defenses, he'll be the weakest in a line with Weepu, Nonu, Sailli, Halai, Piutau,...
If he cannot handle this pressure because he's not adapted yet could be very dangerous for the Blues (if the flyhalf doesn't work....)  and for his career in the union code too. Now the Blues are a little bit in a hurry with the flyhalf spot. Kirwan has managed it very badly rejecting Anscombe for Noakes and Kerr or not giving a chance to West and this is not the best scenario for a code switch.

Welcome back Abasquefan, hope you are well!
I hope they manage Marshall well & don't throw him in the deep end. All players need confidence & to have him start at 10 from game one would be a mistake. I don't think they will do this but we will see.

 Time to prick the bubble a bit here ad bring things back to realism.   Before the start of Super 15 last year - the Blues were punted as being potential winners of the trophy - it as even said on the re-Union programme.  However, they ended up in the bottom half of the log - nowhere near being championship material.

The problem with the Blues was they had only four quality players in their side - namely Luatua, Piutau, Ranger and Braid.   The rest of their players were really just about average or even below par.

The question is why were they bot performing satisfactorily?   The answer is relayively simple, and can be summarized as follows:-

*   Their tight 5 was not up to standard and not competitive;

*   Their half back combination was inadequate;  and

*    they had a problems in certain specific positions - such as no 8, 11, 12 and 14 (Ranger being regarded as having in the main being utilized at 13_ where the players were at nest average..

What will make this year different.   Any flyhalf cannot help but being an improvement on the players they used last year.   However, they lost Ranger (by the proverbial mile the best 13 in New Zealand) - so that means bad news for them.

In the tight five they had one player of substance - namely Retallick - still below par,  but a lot better than his dirty-playing show pony cousin Jaws.   They are going to struggle to get decent balls up front and without it no halfback pair can really achieve much.

Likely to end up in the same position on the log as they did last year.

Awesome looking Blues side this year with alot more depth than previous years.

Will be a baptism of fire for Benji when the Blues meet the Hardarse Hurricanes and the Champion Chiefs in preseason hit outs.

Got to admire the Blues though playing three away games before the season even starts against at least two of the top teams in Super XV rugby. Those games will be Awesome.

Don't know how much you will be able to read into the results of these games though as it's an opportunity for coaches to trial combinations but love him or hate him i'm hoping Benji does well and people keep their expectations of him realistic.

 You're either a liar or stupid Mike, at the start of last years S15 the Blues probably had the weakest NZ squad on paper, absolutely nobody was backing them to win the S15, in fact I challenge you to find one article tipping the 2013 Blues as potential comp winners, till then you're bullshitting...again

There were enough write-ups on the Blues on this site to fill a book and there were also euphoria on the RE-Union programme after the Blues beat the Highlanders stating that the Highlanders were the prime team to challenge the Chiefs and that the victory of the Blues put them in strong contention for the title as well.

You may not have backed them to win - but plenty others did.    So please don't come with that kind of bs when there are real issues to deal with.

I do not think they are much better this year - the positives are getting Marshall at flyhalf and replacing Ali Williams.   The negative is losing Ranger.

For the rest they are still basically the same team - seriously deficient in elements of the game - especially in their tight 5.  There really were only 4 players of real substance in that team last year and those were Ranger, Piutau, Braid and Luatua - adding one in Marshall will not turn them around - especially in view of the loss of Ranger.

The Blues usually start the season well especially in the home derby games. However when they take a loss or two their form dips until eventually they can become easy beats as their season drags on.
The tight 5 remains a problem and not since the days of Sean Fitzpatrick have they had a tight 5 than can match the Crusaders or some of packs in South Africa.
Benji Marshall looks good but in some ways just another Carlos Spencer wannabe.

Clever mike in what order would you rate the NZ franchises then.

I take it you have no hope for the Blues franchise without even seeing them play.

 I do feel that the inclusion of Nonu, Marshall and Kaino will improve things for them markedly. Last years result counts for nothing as this is a new team and comparing last year and this years team is like comparing apples and oranges. No mention either of Frank Halai ?

So given your lack of excitement for the Awesome Blues, say you were to buy a NZ Super XV jersey which one would you buy then if not a Blues jersey ?

Take your pick from these Awesome jerseys below as one of them will be worn by 2014 Super XV champions.

 Awesome

Just one question - is Nonu in Super 15 an asset or a liability?   They had to put pressure on Kirwan to take him into the squad - nobody else in fact wanted him.   Last year he was a disaster for the Highlanders - so I am not at all convinced of the asset issue.

Both the Blues and the Hurricanes have forward deficiencies in their teams and that ,makes an assessment difficult.   We will have to see how they perform in the first three weeks before one can really make an assessment of who is going to do well and perform better than they did last year.

Obviously the only real thing one has to take into account is the performances last year and what can be logically expected this year.   However, based on the form last year and the changes in squads this year I would at this early stage say the NZ conference log would be in the following order:-

*    Chiefs

*    Crusaders

*    Blues

*    Hurricanes

*    Highlanders

To my mind only the Chiefs and the Crusaders have a realistic chance of making the top half of the overall log.  But rugby can be unpredictable and things like serious injury to key players and ebbs and flows in player forms can play havoc with predictions.

 Is Nonu a liability to a team that had a perfect season well that surely must be a rhetorical question.

So goes without saying that Nonu was an Awesome asset to the All Blacks epecially against the Springboks - for some reason he lifts his game when circumstances necessatate. His defence was at it's best at Ellis Park if you remember.

Now comparing Nonu the Highlander with Nonu at the Blues would be like comparing oranges and apples would'nt it.

This year he will have quality players inside and outside of him so i'm expecting some inspired performances from Nonu who has matured i think as a player.

I'm also expecting Awesome things from the Hurricanes this year as they have some Awesome players in their team. The coach is a complete muppet though so that could trip them up.

In summary i think you could throw a blanket over the top four NZ teams as they are all Awesome and they will truly hammer any opposition teams that have the misfortune of meeting them at home.

 The way these teams travel will be the difference as per usual but all NZ teams except the Highlanders pose a major threat to opposing teams while on tour .

It's gunna be Awesome.

Awesome

Nonu did lift his game for the AB's - but was a serious liability for the Highlanders last year.   I think his problem is psychological - something like "I am so good - I cannot speak to highly of myself" - meaning like he puts no real effort into his Super 15 performances and that pisses off his management and team mates.

I think he is a problem on Super 15 level and would like to see if my assessment is wrong - for the Blues sake I hope he comes right - but he had problems with three different franchises now for three years running and I cannot see how it will change.

His defence is a major problem inasmuch as he always aspire to be carded for dangerous tackles.   He was one of the players who missed the tackle on De Villiers when he scored his try in the Ellis Park test.

 Oh I see Mike, you post up some absolute bullshit about the Blues being tipped to win the S15 before the season started and you don't like being called out about it.. If you don't like being called stupid don't post something so grossly factually incorrect.
  BTW most pundits were tipping the Blues to be near the bottom of the NZ conference at the start of last season, they had no marque players, Ma'a Nonu left JK in the lurch, weak forward pack, if anything they punched above their weight, but feel free to run with your version, no matter how stupid it is.

Try and recover the RE-Union programme after the second round last year and see what comes up.   You will find some really extreme praise singing and a forecast about the Blues great prospects  and on this site the NZ supporters were proclaiming that the Blues will be a contender.

There is one thing about some NZ supporters - they lose reality completely and there is no deficiencies in any NZ team - so forgive me if I reached the wrong conclusions after the normal pre- and early season fanfares.

 Clever mike, the word enigmatic has been used quite abit to describe Nonu but  there's probably nothing i can say to change your views on Nonu as Saffas are generally hostile towards him because he is a very dangerous and physical player.

But Bismark Du plessisis  is also a very physical player and he is hero worshipped so there is some irony there don't you think?  Seems you adore firey players as long as they're in your own team . ( Duplessis is more hot air than fire though don't you think.)

As far as Nonu's performance at Ellis Park went i don't think you're giving enough credit to De Villiers for his evasive skills. The same way Barret has'nt been recognised for his talents by South Africans (speaking again in the general terms you like.)

That seems to be the modus operandi i've noticed with your posters is to find a skapegoat for missed tackles instead of saying what an Awesome try that was, give that man a beer.

But if you read some of the match reviews of that epic game at Ellis Park they are giving Nonu credit as one of the Awesome leaders out there on that killing ground. So petty to single him out for one tackle he missed IMO.

Looking though at some of the reasons why Nonu will be a different player this year.

Nonus motivation this year will be different than last . Far more polynesians in the Blues team compared to the Highlanders so a totally different culture and he will be eager to earn their respect. Unless you understand the importance of aiga ( family) to Samoan cultural identity you may struggle to understand the massive difference this will make.

The imminent return of SBW to NZ rugby will also be a motivating factor . SBW 's will be taking his spot so i doubt Nonu will be happy about SBW being the centre (of attention) and stealing all the limelight so he will be trying harder than ever to impress everyone including JK , AB selectors, and rich overseas clubs perhaps.

...and i've already mentioned that i think Nonu has matured as a player and JK will have matured as a coach so hopefully their communication skills have improved and they won't be at loggerheads as before.

 But like i said Nonu will have players of Awesome quality inside and outside of him.

With other dangerous players the likes of Piutau, Halai and Saili lurking in the backline and another firey player inside him in Benji Marshall , stadiums may need the fire brigade on their speed dial to douse the flames coming off this Blues side.

 Keep on writing up Nonu - I do rate hard players - but not dirty ones and the dirt is what Nonu produces in defence - shoulder charges, high tackles around the throat and spear tackles.   How many cards did he pick up in 2013?

At his age will he change at all? I do not think he will and at the end of 2014 Hansen  will have to find another franchise that would put up with him.   Wait and see whether I am correct on that score.

Lets get down to earth - I do not dislike Nonu because he is a physical player = a player can be physical without being a thug - and that is where I draw the line.   Nonu is beyond that line.

I would rather have Bismarck du Plessis as a hooker in my team than any of the New Zealand so-called hookers = talking of hot air in their cases is appropriate not in one of the two highest rated hookers in world rugby = Du Plessis and Strauss.

By the way Noni did play for the Blues previously and the different culture had no impact then - why should it have one now.

 Clever mike if you read my last couple of posts properly you will note that i have said Nonu has matured and is now keener than ever to impress.

Since Nonu was in the Blues last time there are a number of new players and new Blues All Blacks have been blooded such as Piutau , Saili and Halai.

 And with the arrival of Marshall the chemistry has changed even more - Benji Marshall being a freakin football genius . So there is increased confidence in the abilities of all these players especially given the return of Kaino from Japan and that will manifest itself in the quality of their performance.

People will be talking about the dynamic duo of Marshall and Nonu this year like they did with Cruden and SBW. Both are natural footballers , very creative and capable of wreaking havoc so South African teams should study their game carefully if they know what's good for them.

 Graham Henry quits Argentina to focus on BluesESPN StaffOctober 27, 2013The way it was ... Graham Henry turns up for Argentina training © Getty ImagesEnlarge

Days after the departure of coach Santiago Phelan, Graham Henry has said he has no plans to return to assist Argentina and that it was "very unlikely" he will coach internationally again.

While he will continue to coach the Blues, he told the Sunday Star Times his future was at the domestic level. "You never know. I would say it's very, very unlikely, but if I say I'll never get involved in international rugby again, and something happens and I do . . . but it's very unlikely."

Henry was criticised in the New Zealand media for helping Argentina with it being seen as disloyal to his home country. "That was never a concern for me," he said. "You're always going to get some of that. A lot of it was driven by some of the media." There was also unease that he introduced the Argentina squad to a lot of the techniques which brought him so much success with the All Blacks

He said the main reason behind his decision was the need to focus all his time and effort into one project and that he wanted to concentrate on his Super Rugby commitments.

"I didn't feel right. It's either I do it 100% or I don't do it at all," he said. "Doing it 70% is not the right thing to do. I'd never done that before. You can't do it in half measures. It didn't work for me."

This is one reason why the blues will be better than last season....this guy is a master coach ....

 Awesome

Nonu took a very long time to "mature" - taking into account he is soon to be 32 years of age.   I would NOT bargain on that.  Nonu is at an age where lowering of performance standards are replaced by illegalities to make up for decreased performance.

You sound very optimistic - but there is one thing missing.   For any backline to perform you need decent ball from the forwards.  Bar for Luatua and Braid - the Blue s forwards were crap in 2013 and they still are crap.   However, within the next 6 weeks we will see what they can produce - but I frankly am not optimistic.

@mikey,
what u claim reunion siad about the blues last year dosent coincide with what i remember.
tony johnson who IMO is the worlds No1 rugby commentator/rugby analyst and who is also on the reunion show, had this to say about the blues chances in the 2013 spXV,,,
"No one is expecting much from The Blues after their woeful showing of last year and a raft of notable departures.

What they do have is a bunch of very talented young players, a head coach in John Kirwan who is an inspirational sort of fellow, even if his coaching track record is not that flash, and an assistant coach by the name of Henry, who – make no mistake – will be calling a lot of the shots, even if everyone insists “JK’s the boss.” His presence alone suggests better things.

They won’t win it, but they might just be laying the foundations for better times to come."

im not sure what u read or herad to suggest that the majority of kiwis were talking up the blues chances last year, but as poi e said, there was no one here talking up their chances, let alone enough to write up a book as u said.
as poi e said, the blues squad on paper was NZs weakest squad by far, and on top of that they had a new coaching staff, so i think u might have gotten ur wires crossed a little bit here, o_O

regarding nonu
spXV liability???
absolutely, nonus super rugby performance for the last 3-4 years has been pretty ordinary. its almost like he dosent really give a shit, cos when he plays for the All blacks, its a different story all together where hes prob been one of the best and most consistent 12s for the last 4 years.

and u got the call wrong about NZRU making JK take nonu, it was kirwans decision all the way.
had the NZRU been forced to take action, then nonu would be playing for the hurricanes, the club he wanted to go to originally which is based in his city where all his immediate family live.
