If we had to select a Bok team out of non Boks or scarcely Boks....this might be the consensus:

Taute

Jordaan               +

JJ                        -

Surfontein            -

van den Heever

Goosen                -

van Zyl                0

Kitshoff

Cooper

Coenie                 0

Lood                    0

Stephanie            +

Labooschagne      0

Kolisi

Botha

+ is a positive indicator for test rugby

0 is neutral

- is a negative, either because of play or physicality

I'm open to more suggestions and changes. But I'd like to get some commitment from the younger is better brigade. Just to see what the hit rate is.

I'm betting on none of the backs, although I like SP. In the pack I am positive on Coenie, basis his game against France. Strauss is a fine understudy and Arno Botha looked good early last year.  I'm a bit uncertain about Stephanie, after a bunch of mediocre performances he came good against WP....fluke? I'm not sure. Lood looks like the big man choice, but is he test class, time will tell.

SP Marais would be a good call, but Willie is a newby as is Taute so they would play ahead of SP.

Jordaan and Kolbe would not be the answers.......it would be better to play Taute at 15 and Willie on the wing, with v/d Heever as the other wing.

The centre pair is better than the incumbent pair of Jean and Fourie by some distance and I am not saying that for the sake of it.

Goosen is far, far better than useless Morne

v/Zyl is far better than Pienaar and offers more on attack than du Preez......but Hougaard would be the obvious choice. More attacking clout, but not the boot of du Preez

Kitshoff as the loosehead would be my call......fast gaining on the Beast who is struggling to pack the punch of old.

Strauss is older and not the option here as a newby/young player.......this would have to go to Cooper or Callie Visagie.......both good hookers but no match for Bismark or Strauss

Coenie as the tighthead is better than Jannie who is on his way out.

There is no match for Eben at 4, but then he is 22........de Jager is a great back-up.......better than the old farts like Bakkies and Matfield

Steph du Toit is far better than Flip at 5

Kolisi at 6 is far better than Louw, who is not a 6

I'd play CJ Stander at 7 who is a far better rugby player than Alberts, who has more grunt by 6kgs

Arno Botha at 8 is better than Vermeulen who is a newby anyway

Give me the young guns over Fourie, Jean, Morne, du Preez, Pienaar, Jannie, Steenkamp, Flip, Bakkies, Louw and Alberts any day.

Of the old farts there is place for Habana, JP, Frans, Beast, Bismark, Strauss and Vermeulen.

Time to move on in a big way........Meyer needs to take a leaf out of Jakes book with the Sharks and Brumbies......young better players is the way forward with a core of experience in my older boys listed.

Dave I have made most of your changes, but Willie is an incumbent after the NH tour. Jordaan gets the wing because I also have to accomodate the Oom. I have put Kolisi in to satisfy you, but CJ Stander is languishing on some European bench....so he is not an appropriate test case.

I shudder to think of this team playing for us.....but let's see.

This again is one of Mozart's posts without meaning or context.   He uses a mixture of younger established Springboks and mix them up with some players who showed promise early - but did not live up to it.

Over the past year nobody said for example Jordaan is suitable for Springbok selection - I said he must prove himself in Super 15 last year, which he failed to do.  So he is thrown in for some stupid reason or another.

The logic is beyond me.  Coenie had more caps than Le Roux - yet Coenie is on the list and Le Roux is not.   Kolbe has never been mentioned once by anybody I know of as a Springbok contender.  Most people believe he is more of a Sevens player than a 15 man team player.

Van Zyl came from the bench once for the Springboks and is sometimes mentioned as a candidate for the future - but others have similarly been mentioned.

I do not find it wrong to mention Malherbe - he is a future test player that will remain as a test tight head prop for years to come.

That loosie combination would be inappropriate - but is likely to be better than any combination which includes the low work rate Willem Alberts.

That team of youngsters is better than any other international team of youngsters out there.

Give me a Bok side of 15. Willie 14. JP 13. JJ 12. Serfontein 11. Habana 10. Goosen 9. Hougaard 1. Beast 2. Bismark 3. Coenie 4. Etzebeth 5. Steph du Toit 6. Kolisi 7. Vermeulen 8. Arno Botha
16. Strauss 17. Kitshoff 18. Malherbe 19. de Jager 20. Coetzee/CJ Stander/Brussouw 21.v/Zyl 22. Lambie 23. Frans/Taute/Esterhuizen

over that average Bok side that played on the EOYT anyday.........this side would beat the AB's

Oom if you now I agree Jordaan was dominated by Fruean this is the first I've heard of it. But make a suggestion I'm trying to accommodate you unhappy newbie fans.
As for my logic, it's simple....I have given myself liscence to exclude players like Willie, Vermeulen and Etzebeth, who I view as incumbents. It has little to do with the number of caps, much more to do with performance and a sense they have settled. By contrast nobody in the newbie team has settled.
Stop moaning Oom this is your team....improve it or sit back and accept your fate.

"The centre pair is better than the incumbent pair of Jean and Fourie by some distance and I am not saying that for the sake of it."

Always so cock-sure of things before they are fact. But then again, they never need to tackle or do anything constructive on attack to live up to that praise. Quota ratings.

Overall, a pretty flimsy looking team. In the realm of reality it would be a considerable fight against the odds to amount to anything. I recall in 2011 De Villiers gave everyone what they wanted away to New Zealand and we lost by a record score. It's always a nice thought that cruelly comes undone.

Always publishing rubbish.  One missed tackle on Freuan had nothing to do with the Jordaan issue - his defence for the rest of that game and even the season has been very good.   I am not a one incident junkie like you.  I was not happy with his attacking play on average last year and that is the fact of the matter.

I am not about to deal with rubbish contributions - there is no way it is my team - I have and will not support jalf of the players you listed there.

Where I believe some of them would be miles better than the incumbents - I have written about it elsewhere. already.

Really - is that incident the only one I have referred to about Morne Steyn?  Surely not - I commented on it when you wanted to prove that Morne had nothing to blame for in that try - which obviously is BS.

Lets try the following-

*  Missed tackle ratio of 19,4% in the CR and 20% in the EOYT

*  Thoughtless robotic play according to instruction

*  Deficient and aimless so-called strategic kicks

*  Missed often to find touch with penalty kicks

*  Avoiding of contact by virtually no attacking play himself

*   Bench selection for his Club side because of real proven deficiencies.

Positive :  Good kicking at goal in 2013 - flopped badly in 2012

All of those happened repeatedly over the past two years and if mostly involved at least more than 5 cases each.   That is no one-incident hunky thinking.

Video evidence is fine - your garbled interpretations of what happened during the games as to specific incidents - is a joke in bad taste.   Start reporting straightforward and unbiased comments and the scenario may be interesting and worth consideration.  Trying to exonerate certain players and blame others are not worth anything.

Nothing has been "debunked" - facts can never be debunked - what has been debunked is your fairy tales about Morne Steyn in that specific case.

Lets face facts - only people without any knowledge of rugby and backline play would promote Morne Steyn as Springbok flyhalf - he really is sub-par.

CleaverSpike, I have been mulling over your post attacking other posters as being worthless and your other comments about standing up to those that attack other posters. I wonder to myself: what do you bring to the table other than rank ignorance and dishonesty? Sure, it was humorous in the beginning, but it's becoming rather stale. Insulting other posters who don't agree with you just further damages your credibility. You simply don't have anything to offer. If only there was an ignore button.

You are the one that constantly wrote about me knowing nothing about rugby - so it was just a jab in return.   Am sorry about that abd hope you are not upset as you seems to be.

There is one thing that we will never agree on and that is Morne Steyn;s performances as a flyhalf.   You think he is the best flyhalf around - I think he is sub-par, a bonus to opposing teams and other than his kicking at goal not a real flyhalf.

There are always players that individual members of this site will support - while other members are negative about them.   The best way is to prove physically and statistically that they are good propositions and not find fault with other potential players through wishful thinking.

Try and think of the Springbok team as a national team - not as a Blue Bulls team in green jerseys.

I am adding a    "+   -    0" rating for each prospective newbie each week they play. This simply indicates if they have a positive indication for test rugby, a neutral indication or a negative indication. Note this doesn't necessarily correspond were their performance in the game....it is a test indicator. For example I thought Goosen had an average game, but his fragility came through as a negative indicator. At the end of the S15 we will add add up the scores.

Certainly it's opinion Cheezer. If you have discovered the magical formula that predicts test match performance, let's have it....it would save a lot of bother. In the meantime we have opinion....and I will honestly report what I see. For example yesterday the pairing of JJ and Serfontein looked well below test class and Goosen looked very fragile. By contrast Jordaan looked forceful running with pace and taking down JJ in the outside gap  and du Toit had a very good second half after once being run over by Flip Flop.

Goosen being fragile isn't a performance indicator. Serfontein and JJ play for the Bulls, the worst team in the world to judge it's backline because their gameplan only contributes negatively to their centers and wings.

I believe when a player is unable to complete matches and looks like he is going to break down at any minute, it is a performance indicator. Goosen was constantly on the deck being attended to, without being involved in any really heavy collisions.

As for JJ and Serfontein they were playing behind the stronger pack. The Bulls and Sharks were pretty much even in possession and territory....they could make nothing happen. And Fransie dominated Serfontein in the collisions. Jordaan if anything looked faster than JJ and easily hunted him down when JJ was put into the outside gap. If that's our Bok test pairing we are in trouble. Centres have to "see" the opportunity....these two see nothing. So week in, week out during the tests we were told the opportunities weren't there for JJ. But that's because he doesn't create them.

Goosen is a tactical vulnerability. Send big runners and your defensive wall crumbles. It was done in 2012 and it's going to become the norm with all sides against the Cheetahs.

Mozart, your assertions look about right. I certainly would like to have another look though before posting my thoughts, but definitely, the Bull's centres utterly dominated.

"So week in, week out during the tests we were told the opportunities weren't there for JJ. But that's because he doesn't create them."

That is the crux to their argument, just buying time, delaying the inevitable egg-to-face.

Somewhere along the line JJ will get a chance to run rampant through an open 60 metres and we will hear the howls about him being an attacking must have. But in all the tight matches he has about as much chance of breaching a defence as Sonny Liston had of hitting Cassius Clay.

Here we go again, Sun-Tzu you've gotten boring rather quickly, keep going at it with the Goosen stuff and then completely dismiss when you're wrong. All I can remember of Goosen in 2012 is leaving everyone in dust on the scoreboard until his injury. Also you do realise the Lions didn't score a single try and how the Cheetahs looked a lot less of a team when he went off, of course you didn't because you're only wanting to see Goosen in a bad light. Granted he didn't have one of his better games, but it's the beginning of the season and he still didn't play poorly.
To start off, I'm in no ways a JJ supporter but neither am I of the opinion that he's a bad player, he's the best of a bad bunch so you can stop your JJ tangent and realise that I don't care.
Mozart the infamous one incident junkie. That's the first time Serfontein has got bounced by any player (JWC 2012 onwards), also Steyn is a big guy and it's not the first time he has bounced a player. For the rest of the match Serfontein went for Steyns ankles. Need I remind you of Serfontein's 2013 Super rugby season? He was fantastic and if you argue against that, then I refuse to comment any further due to your ignorance.

 Shezza

Mozart makes mountains from molehills - especially if he does not like players.   U think that Goosen had a reasonable game - and now suddenly everyone is crying "injured again".  I gained the impression that he picked up a few bumps and got treated for that - his replacement also does not seem all that important.  Nobody knows the nature and extent of the "injury" and there is nothing in the media as yet about it.

I think that every player makes the mistake at times to use the wrong technique in tackling and that is what likely happened in the case of Serfontein.   However, for the next three years you will hear continuously about that incident from Mozart.

I do not like one-off incidents to be used as carrer defining - but some do in the case  where they do not like players.

Both Serfontein and Engelbrecht was not really in reasonable form - but they got a rotten service from their  halfbacks and things may hopefully turn around in future.

Shezza I will concede Serfontein had a few good games when he started. He had a young man's confidence and lots of energy. Much of that seems to have been drilled out of him by now. He is not reading plays well, his inside step is a known and his pace looks ordinary at best. Right now he looks no better than Wynand Olivier.
JJ does have pace....but so did Nokwe, Chavanga and a host of others. Those players never figured out how to make the pace count. Nor has JJ.

All I'm going to say is Bulls are ruining Serfonteins potential. He needs to get out of there ASAP, but where I do not know. It's the first game of the season Mozart, you've just given you're final judgement on a player over a single game a bit harsh don't you think.
Mike, I really hope that this injury isn't bad. Just as long as he gets a decent run of games and plays for the Boks.

Actually JJ got the ball 5 times...passed once....ran 4 times for 13 metres....beat nobody....lost the ball twice. As for getting the ball in traffic he had plenty of space to crack Jordaan on the outside and was easily caught and put away.

Oh what complete rubbish, go check the footage, first time he gets the ball, he steps Frans, that is one man beaten.

JJ did not receive the ball in space as Jordaan did, that is utter rubbish. He only lost the ball once, right at the end of the game, after regaining a fumble and then spilling it when hit by a defender. JJ did no more or less with the little possession he got. He beat Frans and took contact, took another two passes in traffic, another he passed and the last one in traffic he spilt as did many with the slippery ball. JJ gained as many metres as Fourie did in 3 EOYT.....and JJ had a damn quiet game given the lack of good ball that came his way. His defensive stats were spot on but for Mvovo stopping in his tracks and cutting in only to be hit by another defender.

Jordaan was put into acres of space on his runs..........he never beat a single defender through skill, he has straight runs at pace, which he has plenty of. He did nothing of note other run well in space.

I know you want to defend Engelbrecht and I have sympathy with you in the relevant regard but it is always better to stick to facts.  Have a look at the following-

Jordaan 1/0 5 3/3/7 99 4 3 0 2 8/1 0/0 0 0/0

Jordaan was given "acres of space"  in the case of the try scored by him - but for the rest he did create space for himself - he made 4 clean line breaks and beat 3 defenders.   Anyone who looked at the game with open eyes would have seen that.

So calm down and accept reality,   Nobody is writing Engelbrecht off - he was just outplayed by a thinking player yesterday and could easily improve next round.

No he did not create space for himself.....what rubbish, he had acres of space when he gets the ball from Mvovo for the try. The second time he has a good run is when Frans throws a long pass and puts him into space and all he has to do is run, beating the old man Ndungane I think and the last run was also when he was put into space and JJ catches him

JJ was not outplayed at all......Jordaan could not outplay JJ if he tried.......outplaying a player means you beat your opposite number a good few times. Jordaan never beat JJ once, not even close.

The most concerning thing about Jordaan was how easily Greyling brushed his tackle away....that was piss poor and confirmed that while Jordaan in great in space, he is a liability in defence and contact......at the end of the game, JJ bashes Jordaan to the ground with ease. Thats about the only bit of domination I saw between the two of them one on one.

Nope, that would mean that there was no gap, Jordaan had him covered.

JJ never received the ball in space the way Jordaan did on three occasions
