Bok player ratings ....not red hot

Player ratings from Rugby 365: . 15 Andries Coetzee He is certainly a threat on attack but the usually calm fullback let his aggression out to receive a yellow card. Fortunately, it never cost his team. 5/10 14 Raymond Rhule Attacking chances were minimal but questions will once again be raised about his defensive frailty. 4/10 13 Jesse Kriel He can run dangerous lines with the ball but that moment on indecisiveness which led to an Argentinian try will leave a blemish on what was a decent outing. 5/10 12 Jan Serfontein Not a performance to rave about as he had a bit of a mixed bag in all facets. 4/10 11 Courtnall Skosan Showed once again that there is no substitute for speed as he raced back to stop a definite try. While he is not the biggest guy on the field, he is not afraid to get stuck in. 6/10 10 Elton Jantjies Two early penalty misses could have negatively affected the rest of his game but he settled into his shift soon after that to dictate play and keep his side on the front foot. 7/10 9 Francois Hougaard Killed any attacking momentum by insisting on taking a few steps before passing. If his performance proved anything, it is that he is not a natural scrumhalf. 3/10 8 Uzair Cassiem Pretty sure some cynics will be calling for his head despite putting in a steady all-round shift. 6/10 7 Jaco Kriel Not the best performance from the usually steady flank but he did what was needed at crucial times. 6/10 6 Siya Kolisi Baring one forward pass, he was by far the best player on the field. He ran hard lines, tackled like a man possessed and was a menace at the breakdowns. 9/10 5 Franco Mostert Could not bag a line-out steal or two on the day and never got the chance to show his power but he landed all of his tackles. 6/10 4 Eben Etzebeth (captain) A robust performance from the leader of the team. Set the standard and led the charge by putting in a complete performance. 8/10 3 Coenie Oosthuizen Did not match the standard he set in the opening round but he never slipped a tackle and contributed to a solid scrum. 7/10 2 Malcolm Marx His mobility and athleticism continue to bring a new dynamic to the Springboks' setup. 8/10 1 Tendai Mtawarira Despite limited chances to carry the ball, he was defensively sound and showed why he is a strong scrummager. 7/10 Replacements: 16 Bongi Mbonambi (on for Marx, 77th min) Not enough time to be rated. 17 Steven Kitshoff (on for Mtawarira, 52nd min) Looked to get his hands on the ball in open play to bash through the opposition. 6/10 18 Trevor Nyakane (on for Oosthuizen, 54th min) Slipped through some tackles to show how much power he has while also sticking all of his tackles. 6/10 19 Pieter-Steph du Toit (on for Mostert, 52nd min) While his carries may not have gotten the Springboks over the advantage line, his tackling technique helped to stop the opposition. 6/10 20 Jean-Luc Du Preez (on for Cassiem, 52nd min) Carried the ball nicely when it was needed but that temper of his needs to be addressed -after he got himself involved in some handbags - if he is to remain a regular in the team. 5/10 21 Rudi Paige (on for Hougaard, 57th min) Not everyone's cup of tea but his service was definitely better than the man he replaced. 6/10 22 Curwin Bosch Not used. 23 Damian de Allende (on for Serfontein, 72nd min) Not enough time to be rated.

 Other than Nyakane and Cassiem those ratings pretty much concurs with my earlier comments on Paige, Beast, Hougaard and Serfontein. I'm probably one of the cynics with little faith in Cassiem or Nyakane. The team has a handful of players who qualify as Bok material but Jirre they need to beef up the Loosies and center pairing quick-smart. They also need a scrummie who does a lot more than just passes the ball.

After looking at the game and also studying the stats for the game I came to the conclusion that the above ratings are in some respects flawed and I oyjerr cases misleading:-
I think the assessment on Coetzee was too low - despite the yellow card,   His game other than the yellow card was worthy of a 7 and with the card should be a 6.
Rhule on the day was a serious liability - missing 4 of his 6 tackle attempts is a serious liability. Since he produced near to zero in attacking play a rating of 4 is extremely generous - it should be a 2.
Jesse Kriel and Jan Serfontein were both without any rel\al punch and the defense of Serfontein was seriously questionable.  Both should be 1 point less than they were given.
Hougaard was poor so his assessment is OK
Cassiem was a total nonentity and showed near to zero in all facets of play,  An assessment of higher than 5 is a total misrepresentation.
There were no real scrumming prowess and constant troubles on Beast side  of the scrum - one leading to a penalty.  He was good in defense - but is 6 not more appropriate?  Kitshoff scrumming was vastly superior to that of Beast so his assessment is a 6 so why is beast a 7?
Mostert  another very generous assessment.  He was very quiet on the day and his only positive was making a rather low number of tackles - while conceding a possession turnover.   Anything more than a 5 is way too generous - even a 4 is generous.

I have to agree with SB as to the problem areas and I think that there are problems in the squad.
Those are iro of the following:-
*   One of the wings (Rhuyle) needs urgent replacement.   There are a number of options here - but I think Combrinck is the most obvious.
*   The center pairing remains a problem - the Serfontein-Kriel combination worked reasonably well in the French tests - but were very questionable.   However, replacements are not obvious, but I would try De Allende and Vorster as a combination.   Without De Allende the try of Du Preez would not have happened (both Kriel and  Serfontein would have killed the attack.  I have wqatched three CC games and since his return to play Van Rensburg was poor with serious deficiencies in ball handling skills,   His defense was also questionable,  Vorster on the other hand at 13 was vastly superior to any of the opposing players.  The Van Rensburg/Vorster combination was seriously questionable - eg in the Golden Lions game against the Stormers - when they were totally outplayed by the Jones-Viljoen combination.
*   The scrummies are open to various possibilities.   Schreuder did very well for the Kings in Super Rugby and in his first starting game yesterday for the Sharks he was exceptional and was the MOM.  He is vastly better than either Hougaard or Paige.
In the case of the loosies I would play Whiteley at 8 and Du Preez at 7, while putting Kriel on the bench.   Cassiem is out of depth and he is an obvious quopta selection.  
I would still start with Du Toit ahead of Mostert and either use Mostert at 7 or on the bench.   The present combination will not work against the Aussies and will be totally out of depth against the AB's. 
Mbonabi is totally out of depth as a hooker and either Marais or Akker would be an huge improvement on him.
