Bok squad vs Wales in Washington

You posted the above while I was working on one too.   Apologies/   My comments on the squad are as follows:-

There are 18 players other thn Whites in the squad.   Of those the following ae useless quota players ajd not international standard players:-

Nizaam Carr

Siya Kolisi

Bomgi Mbonambi

Oupa Mohoje

Sikhumbuzo Notshe

Marvin Ori

Chilliboy Rallepele

Elton Jantjies

There are apparently some players that Erasmus is looking at for the future development:-

The following are poor selections since they have not performed up to standard this year:-

Frans Malherbe

Duane Vermeulen

Travis Ismaiel

Frans Steyn 

At least there are no crap like Lleyds,  Rhule, De Jongh,   Dreyer  and Morne Steyn in the squad anymore.   

...not so clevermike the only players named that are useless are black ??...given the results over the past couple of weeks i'm sure you could argue there are also plenty of useless white SA players named as well....but in your haste i'm sure you've just forgotten to add their names ..

Of the best players, I think most have been included. 

It is such a big squad- Some of these are likely to be dropped after the Wales game, so the squad looks pretty good- but it just depends who is retained. 

I have written some initial comments- with some rating predictions of their performances.

Forwards (24): 

Nizaam Carr - 4.5/10. A decent player, but is international a step too far. 

Bismarck du Plessis 6-9/10  let's see what type of form he is- and if he could make it to the world cup.

Dan du Preez - 6.5/10 if only he could catch and pass, but otherwise a good player. 

Jean-Luc du Preez- -6.5/10  if only he could catch and pass, but otherwise a good player. 

Pieter-Steph du Toit - 7.5/10 . Good, but do not play him at flank vs Ben Young.

Thomas du Toit - 7/10 Lots of potentials, but which prop position? 

Jason Jenkins - 5.5/10 has promise. Appears to be a partial thinking player.

Steven Kitshoff - 6/10  been hopelessly out of form all season, but played well for the Boks last year. 

Siya Kolisi - 6/10 out of form, but was very good last year. Perhaps he will do better in a game plan better than the Stormers.

Wilco Louw  - 7.5/10 good

Frans Malherbe- 5.5/10. Injury prone, and prone to falling flat over his stomach. If you want to watch a match will lots of scrum resets, then Malherbe is the pick.

Bongi Mbonambi  6/10/ He is physical and a strong ball carrier. His lineout throwing ranges from good to poor. 

Qouta Mohojé  3.5/10. Some decent headbutts, and lineout jumps. 

Franco Mostert 6/10. Has not played well this season- but he has been at flank.

Tendai Mtawarira 7.5/10. Has been in good form all season. Looks like he can make it to the next world cup

Ox Nche  6/10. Need to see more of him play.

Sikhumbuzo Notshe  5.5/10. Initially, he burst onto the scene with lots of skills. Seems to have bulked up and lost pace and skill. Has also been injury prone so not getting good runs

Trevor Nyakane 7/10 . The fittest he has been ever, and he can cover both sides of the scrum. 

Marvin Orie - 3/10 - need to see more of him play.

Chiliboy Ralepelle 5.5/10-  Steroid boy is past his sell-by date. There is 4 hookers in the squad, raising questions who wil be kept. 

Kwagga Smith 7/10- Nice inclusion. Offers some pace, and also breakdown capabilities. Is he too small for international rugby, or at least an SA game plan? 

RG Snyman - 6.5/ potential. Is he big enough for test rugby?

Akker van der Merwe - 6.5/10 Hopefully the third choice. He is a good thrower - and all around player. 

Duane Vermeulen - 6-8.5/10. Is he is a spent force, can he make it to the next world cup

Backs (19): 

Lukhanyo Am -  5.5. decent, but I doubt he is an international standard.

Curwin Bosch - 7/10 solid impact player that can cover a few positions. Perhaps the fastest runner in the squad, the best kicker for poles and territory. The worst defence in the game, otherwise he has lots of attributes.

Damian de Allende  6.5/10. It just depends which Delande shows up. 

Faf de Klerk . 6/5. Crap in the Coetzee game plan, but should be better with Rassie.

Robert du Preez- 6/5. Hot and cold. 

Aphiwe Dyantyi - 7.5 Lots of potential. He needs to get game time at outside centre and wing to see his best spot. He has the bulk and power for center, and there is less black talent at center than wing.

André Esterhuizen - 7/10. He has been good this season. Initially a donkey, but now thinks. A clone of Frans Steyn that offers a strong carry up in the midfield, with some offloads.

Warrick Gelant  7/10. Next to Willie Leroux, he is the best we have. He is not the fastest, but he has scoed good tries this season. Better than Coetzee who has xero x factor.

Travis Ismaiel  4.5/10. I don't think he is an international standard player.

Elton Jantjies  6.5/10. It is a new slate under Rassie. He is pathetic under Coetzee, but many were useless under Toesie

Jesse Kriel - 7.5/10. He has had his best season to date. He is the form outside the centre in SA.

Willie le Roux  8/10. Wille Leroux has his weaknesses- but he brings a playmaking and thinking dimensions to the backs, along with good finishing skills.

Makazole Mapimpi - 7/10. Perhaps too small, but a brilliant finisher. Probably the best finisher in SA.

Sibusiso Nkosi   7.5/10. He looks solid but needs a game plan that will involve him more

Embrose Papier - 6.5/10  . I am not sure why he is not starting more games, maybe as he is young. 

Handré Pollard - 8/10. Along with Jessie Kriel- he has developed his game under Mitchell.

Frans Steyn - 5.5/8.10  Is he a spent force? He will never offer the skill of his younger self, but no one can carry the ball up like Frans Steyn. His defence in tight games is very good, but he can get stepped when more space exists.

Ivan van Zyl -4.5/10 I am not convinced about his potential as a test player

Cameron Wright- Need to see more of his play.

Read my whole comments please.   See what I wrote about other players as well.   I just look at the players and those I listed as poor selections have all played for the Springboks before and failed badly.

The who le debate in SA is the role of the Government and politicians in team selection - so I took a look at that aspect particularly.

You would not like to see poor players in the NZ squad - so why should I like it  iro the SA team?    

I would not have many of the other players in my squad either - since I think selections should be based on performance.   There are plenty players of any race which I would leave  out a well - but still have to study those in more detail..

My humble opinion is that players rated  below 5 should not be in the squad. 

...notsoclevermike,  not that i hold out much hope for either centre i could point out that the team Frans Steyn plays for Montpellier is now in the grand final ...plus i think Steyn has scored more tries than De Allande this season correct me if i'm wrong...

...and odds on Montpellier will win the French Top 14 next week against Castres and then Steyn's profile will be elevated even higher...in contrast De Allande is part of a failing wooden spoon team , bottom of the barrel in the SA conference...you see how Steyn could easily get selected ahead of De Allande on that basis...

...but regardless who is chosen, with 50 odd players selected that surely suggests there's an A team to face England and a B team to face the Welsh B team...otherwise what is the point of selecting such a bloated squad...should A and B teams be the scenario the challenge then becomes to name two competitive squads from those 50 players...with a few overlaps

You indeed indeed a funny guy.   There is a difference between De Allende and Fat Fransie,  De Allende is a center who played the fool with SBW  in a recent match they played against each other.-Far Fransie - according to Plumtree is no center at all.

Fat Fransie was not the preferred center for Montpellier - Serfontein was.       

...notsoclever mike, playing the fool must mean something totally different in SA to what it means in NZ... what you also have to take into consideration is Cruden has made a lot of those SA Montpellier players look very good and so has Nadolo and Picamoles ...but rubbing shoulders with those internationals Steyn will be alot wiser for the experience and maybe he can help the younger players in yr team with what he's learned..

I also see Pienaar was also offered a Bok jersey and turned it down...he scored 16 points for Montpelier yesterday so a handy little half back...but he's off to Ulster to coach

Kriel never trashed his opponents -  De Allende did.   Remember how Nonu after  he was wiped the floor with by De Allende was replaced early by Hansen as a result?

It was any time as bad as he did to SBW in the Blues game against the Stormers earlier this year,   Bad news insofar as the NZ  opponents are concerned.

The test I referred to was on 25 July 2015 om Johannesburg and the stats for the match are as follows:-

Look specifically at the tackle stats  where Nonu missed four tackles on De Allende,   He was replaced by Hansen at halftime by Fekitoa, 

To look at the issue objectively one also have to look a the Stats of De Allende and especially to the meters gained and  line breaks and defenders beaten by De Allende:-

De Allende carried the balls 11 times for a 46 meter gain - breaking the line twice and beating 6 attempted tackles.    Most of those involved  beating Nonu's tackle attempts.

Taking into account the above Nonu was replaced at halftime because De Allende did wipe the floor with him - why did Hansen otherwise act against Nonu replacing him early? 

As to your remembrance of the WC incident you refer to - Nonu tried to get away from De Allende running diagonally  across the field and near the tryline caught him and tackled him.   However. that test was a farce where the first receiver was not the flyhalf - but Burger as a loosie -  it totally  disrupted the Springbok backline and the role played in that test by De Allende was also disrupted as a result.   Fact is Nonu tried desperately in that test to avoid De Allende as much as possible and in the whole test only made 2  tackles.   But that is not the test I based my statement on - it was the July test.    

Won't be surprised if Wales take this one...apart from a few inexperienced new players...the same old arguments and debates on this forum about virtually the same players plus a few extra.

Can't see Rassies magic wand suddenly changing things instantly either.
