I'm a little surprised Wynand didn't make the run on team.

Meyer must be slipping.

Lets face facts = the following has no real reason for being in that team:-
*   The Stade Francoais reject*   The loafing fat plank*   The geriatric care centre manager*   The medical doctor pretending he cans till scrum
On the bench - we do not need =
*   Meisiekind  - maybe they should sing Liefling to him in Nelspruit as well*   The Fatso from France

Well Heyneke has done satisfactory but with the old toppies intermingling with some exciting youth...I'm not entirely convinced that conservative rugby is the answer for SA in the medium to longer term...it's time to give opportunity to the younger un's... so much wasteage...the goal to win a world cup does not rely on experience with burn out alone but it relies on youth for on going results...I think coaches are sometimes selfish...want the highest accolade and then bomb out and leave rugby talent in the wings or worst in the doldrums...a cost factor that is too high a price for progression into the future...a common error in SA's conservatism.

Smart stuff from HM. Having solidified the Bok scrum with Gurthro, he feels confident enough to let the Beast have a go. And face it, the Beast needed a rest. I'm sure if Coenie had scrummed more consistently Jannie would also be on the bench. Bringing back Flip and retaining Lood shows his commitment to the younger chaps....he could have opted for the safety of the more accomplished Bakkies.

I'm still a bit uncomfortable with our midfield pairing. But those who want Jordaan after the Stormers centres showed him up are always going to be disappointed.

So if you aren't 20 you can't be an exciting new prospect. Willie made his debut at 23....but I forget, you missed him because he wasn't one of your junior picks Dave. Age has nothing to do with it.

Well Saff, that's about it and precisely with not taking Tendai and Bismarck into the mix...who are not exactly in rugby terms young but are worthy of their places.

I know PSDT and Etzebeth are injured but to even suggest to have Matfield and Bakkies in the team...did I pick up a rumour from some...even into the world cup? (and they were great but mediocre now) spits in the face of intelligent reasoning and far-sightedness.

Dave I cant recall one post where you have really been enthusiastic about Willie before this week...faint praise as I recall.
Dave we all get your model....pick every young chap and keep them till they are about 28.... After which they are old men. So what does the evidence say? Every RWC winner averaged over 27.... Which pretty much means you would have been trying to change half the players in every RWC winner.
It's  a Monty Python approach to rugby.

this team will get the job done, the welsh team have had no form and are missing a ton of key players.

i like how SARU stack up the Boks fixtures with easy beats, this time last year it was the might of samoa, italyt and scotland who the Boks got to bully, LMAO,

pity meyers Boks got bitch slapped in NZ and SA by the All Blacks though, but just like SA rugby DNA = 10 man rugby
Bok fan DNA = blame the ref
so theres a ready made excuse for when the Boks lose again,

Why are you always talking BS on this site.   First of all Steenkamp was better in the scrums against the Welsh after a complete collapse the previous week.  What makes you so certain it would last - after all his club does not select him for their starting line up because he is inconsistent - mostly poor.   One game and suddenly he is solid - what a fool you are.
Bakkies used to be 5 years ago more accomplished - at this stage he is a very average club player.  That was shown on Saturday and also in the two previous tests he played in.  What makes him more accomplished after De Jager showed him up as really non-performing.  Piss-poor Bakkies is "injured" - at least that was the reason given for his non-selection.
Sure - who wants Jordaan after he took adequate care of Nonu in the Blues game - you hide behind vague statements and mostly false ones at that.   One thing is for sure - he is still the best defending center in Super 15 - three times better than the atrocious records of Francois Steyn and De Jongh.
Meyer was never committed to younger players - he was forced -
*   through injury to Kirchner to select Le Roux;*   through the late decamping of Steyn and injury of De Villiers to select Serfontein;*   through the wedding of Flippes brother select De Jager be on the bench
After a very good year last year - Meyer put Le Roux on the bench against the Welsh - a sign that he really was not convinced about him.   He is like Saffex said a fool - who believes in fairy tales - namely that the geriatrics he prefers will win the WC for SA - that after they failed miserably in performances in 2010 and 2011.
Now that his pals are back - I will lay a bet - he will drop Etzebeth as well.

Wrong Moz, I have been raving about Willie for the past 2 years and laughed at Meyer for selecting him on the bench in the first EOYT test.

As for age, look no further than my core of Boks which include JP, Habana, Frans, Beast, Bismark, Strauss, Vermeulen and Brussouw........how old are these guys? At a stretch one could add Jean, du Preez, Jannie, Louw and Alberts to appease the masses.

That's a core of 8 experienced players in their late 20's and early 30's.......a good test side needs no more than that in terms of a core.

Add to that core the likes of Willie, Taute, Sithole, JJ, de Allende, Serfontein, Goosen, Lambie, Hougaard, de Klerk, Reinach, Coenie, Malherbe, Nkanyane, v/d Merwe, Kitshoff, Etzebeth, PSDT, Lood, Willemse, J. du Plessis, Lewies, Kolisi, Labascagne, A.Botha, Coetzee, v/d Walt, CJ Stander, Elstadt, Carr and co and you cant go wrong

You don't add old farts like Matfield, Fourie, Pienaar, Bakkies and co......its regressive for obvious, obvious reasons

I have to say that Saffex has been singing the praises of le Roux, I won't call him Willie because, in the context of the post it would just have caused comment and mild amusement no doubt !, for a good while. And everyone that has said how poor Wales really are is telling the truth. They are pretty dismal, for all their talk. In the 6 Nations they were awful and we should have annihilated them had it not been for the dumbest of penalties from Hartley and Lawes. That was the time we needed to put them to the sword and we didn't.They are worse now than they were then. You can't judge your team against them. Please don't make the mistake that all is well in the world of the Bok because you scored some tries against the Welsh.

No, they aren't that bad......but close
If we were at the start if the season and not all over the place at the tail end then yeah, we would have, in two Tests. Right ? That's the AB way if talking ourselves up isn't it ? Am I learning ? Or have I just had the temerity to commit the cardinal sin of taking one at NZ ?
Being serious, we were a lot to blame out there in both Tests. But we are improving with our mishmash of a Squad. I am heartened

To Saff's credit he was a spotter of Willies talent when he was with Griquas...I also was taken with this young man's uncanny ability to run and attack with the ball in hand...what school did he go to... surely not a school in Kimberley...must have been a border at Grey...or is he an exception...not the run of the mill good player...someone like dear Juba, Christian Cullen, HO or even better?

Maybe the start of a future legend?

No not at Greys.   Le Roux is from the Boland and after school did a wise thing - he went to play for the Griquas and first came to notice when playing for the Cheetahs in Super 15.
He has natural ball sense skills and that would have been killed if he went to the Northern Bulls or even the Sharks.   The Cheetahs did not kill his natural instincts like would have happened  at the major Unions and in fact encouraged him  to continue playing his game.
I first saw him in 2012 and was struck by his real capabilities.  It was blatantly clear at that stage that he was bound to go higher in his career if Meyer had any sense.   Meyer ultimately was forced to select him at full back because he was forced to as a result of an injury to Kirchner - otherwise he had no chance of ever making it. .

Well Mike thanks for the imput...a Boland boy...that is the land of good hard rugby...as well as the Free State...the problem with Boland and the Free State is that they are mostly rural and small town human activities but they breed good, tough and healthy individuals. I went to a bording school in PM Burg that produced some well known rugby players, cricketers and other sportsmen and the bulk seemed to come from rural and farming areas...a healthy and uneffected enviroment. When you are exceptional like Willie you have to go where the profits lie..afterall Bismarck,Frans,Jannie and a host of others came from rural areas...Schalk from Paarl, Juba from Ladysmith/Escourt and Henry Honiball from Bergville just to mention a few.

Sorry but that was Saffex's selections two years ago.   I think he has been off Lambie at 13 for the past year at least.   Seeing that Taute was out with injury and he only recently start showing some form at full back - Saffex went to JJ at 13.   In view of the piss poor form of Francais Steyn he went for Serfontein at 12.
The other way around - you have gone into reverse gear as per normal on the other end of the scale - the older the better.
Your backline at the two years ago was as follows:-
15  Kirchner.  14  JP.  13  Juan de Jongh.  12  Jean de Villiers,  11 Habana,  10  Morne, 9  Pienaar
Since then you have changed to the following:-
15  Le Roux,  14 JP,  13  Jacque Fourie,  12  De Villiers,  11 Habana,  10  Francois Steyn,  9   Du Preez.
Every time Meyer made a change you follow the selected player faithfully echo-style. So now it is back to Morne - the Stade Franncais reject - at 10.
Never a logical or original idea coming from you.  Despite his poor record you suddenly this year went on the Francois Steyn campaign for selection at 10 = that may have been original - but certainly not logical.
That is on par with Meyer - he started off with selections based on the Sharks doing well in Super 15 and filled up virtually the rest with Blue Bulls he was "acquainted with.  He had vitually the whole Bulls team at some stage or anoother in 2012 either in teh starting line up or on the bench.  Fact is only one Bulls player missed out.  He then brought in the Ex-Bull Steenkamp - who failed in virtually every test he played in.  He then started to recruit virtually every ex-Bull and now s in a situation that because Botha and Matfield is available - he would not hesitate one minute in dropping Etzebeth from the starting team - just like eh did with Le Roux in the Welsh test last year.    De Jager will son be out of the squad completely and so would Serfonmtein.  He was thinking of De Allende at 13, but that was a momentary relapse in his quest to have a team all over the age of 30.  There must be a serious longing in Meyer's heart to get rid of Willie as well - he must yearn for the return of Kirchner - but I do not think he is brave enough to actually drop Le Roux and face the outcry.
Meyer's ideas apparently are the same as yours.   Pick whomsoever is available from the 2007 WC squad - even if you need a wheelchair and they are non-performing - add some additions made in 2009 to the Springbok team and forget about the fact that that crowd was poor in 2010 and 2011 - and bob is your uncle.  Some fairy will change that lot into performing players ready to play in the WC next year.   There is no fairies around that will make that BS ideas worthwhile and we will not even be 10% competitive by next year.
Instead of picking players based on experience coupled to performance - insofar as Meyer is concerned performance means nothing in his book.   What a backward-looking dunce we have as a Springbok coach!!!!!

I have differed from Saffex numerous times in the past and will continue to do so in future.  I differed fromm him about Taute and Engelbrecht at 13.   I differed from him on the issue of Pietersen at 13 as well when he tried to talk Pietersen up as a 13.  I also differed from him about the need to replace De Villiers and Habana  at this stage - since they are two of the players who still perform extremely well on test performances.  And I differ sharply rom him about Hougaard.
However, where we are in agreement is about Morne Steyn - who never was and never will be a player with ball sense and whose attacking abilities are virtually non-existent - he is no playmaker.  Saffex and I differed initially differed from me on the Alberts issue - but he changed his mind and we are in agreement on that one now.   We are also in agreement on the issue of Matfield, Botha, Jannie du Plessis and Steenkamp.
Whereas he is constantly argues about the selection of youthful players - my norm is different.  I have no problem with performing older players.  I said it in the past that experience counts - but experience must be accompanied by performance.  If performance is not in evidence - irrespective of age - those players are not good enough to represent SA.
I do not credit older players with performance purely because of their experience.  If thy fail to produce the goods - like Bakkies did on Saturday - I would say it clearly.   In the 40 minutes Botha was o the field of play he did basically nothing of consequence - while De Jager did a heck of a lot more in the 49 minutes he played.Matter of fact in that 40 minutes De Jager made more tackles than Bakkies did in the 3 tests he played in recently.  insifar as for instance defense is concerned.
I am not only critical of non-performing older players in SA - I also said that Wales have also showed serious signs of declining performances because of the age factor.  If one looks at the poor performances of Whales in the 6 Nations - and especially their 26 - 3 loss against Ireland, but also their tepid performance against Itally and loss against England - then it is clear that they have serious deficiencies, which I believe is also coupled to their elderly players up front.  I lso raised some issues about the performances of McCaw.
It is no use to accept older players because Meyer wants them in the team.   Meyer clearly profess his preference in selection of players he is knows well from his past coaching of the Bulls - so he clearly is not particularly interested in performances of those players.   To just blindly follow Meyer win his selections based on earlier familiarity is t my mind foolish.
Meyer has had a look at some younger players and he has more or less stuck with Etzebeth, Le Roux and Serfontein - although that sticking was not consistent - as pointed out earlier.   Even in the case of Le Roux he showed a desire to get rid of him if his Welsh test selection of last year is borne in mind.   Only the previous week he dropped Serfontein completely from the match day squad.   Now that he has Botha and Matfield around - I think that the best Etzebeth can hope for is a bench selection and De Jager will not be in future squads at all.   The younger players spoken about Meyer were only allowed in - because of injuries and  non-availability of older players, not because he thinks that younger players should be brought on to build a team for the future or based on their performances in the games they were allowed to play in.
The only younger player who is most secure in his selection is Le Roux - the rest is on the discard list.   Be it as it may - I think to select players only based on experience and reputation without regard to their present performances is shortsighted and not in the interest of Springbok rugby.  E ven though interim match wins do occur, in the next two years those wins will not be sustainable and a decline is bound to set in.
