South Africa could be poised to field a weakened side in their Rugby Championship opener against Australia in Johannesburg on July 21 (AEST) as coach Rassie Erasmus juggles his players to ensure they peak during the World Cup in Japan.

The Springboks must travel to New Zealand and Argentina over the next month in a shortened Southern Hemisphere championship.

Erasmus said he will “split our resources”, which includes sending an advanced party of 15 players to New Zealand next week, well ahead of their July 27 meeting in Wellington.

“Obviously the ideal is to win the Rugby Championship and build confidence going into the World Cup,” Erasmus told reporters.

“But if you just purely think of the logistics... playing Australia here and then getting on the plane and arriving on a Monday or Tuesday, and thinking you have a realistic chance of beating New Zealand in New Zealand?

“So with the hand we got dealt, we have to split our resources. However, it also gives us chance to work with some fringe players that we haven’t had a chance to work with.”

Erasmus said there are only a few members of his Boks squad who are absolute certainties to start in their positions, and so doesn’t want to use the label of a ‘B’ team for the match against the Wallabies.

“You will see when the side is announced for Australia, it isn’t an A or B side, I can give you my word. It will be two competitive sides, because we want to win both games (against Australia and New Zealand),” he added.

“When you look at it, what is the difference between Lukhanyo Am and Jesse Kriel? What is the difference between Beast Mtawarira and Steven Kitshoff? What is the difference between Trevor Nyakane and Frans Malherbe?

“What is the difference between Eben Etzebeth and Franco Mostert? Or Franco Mostert and Lood de Jager? There are very few players where you can say this one is streets ahead of this one.

“That’s the nice thing at this stage, there are four or five positions where you can say this guy is clear cut, first choice. Those first clear-cut choices will probably go to New Zealand (next week).”

After their clash in New Zealand, South Africa travel to Salta to face Argentina on August 10, before a home meeting against the South Americans in a one-off test in Pretoria a week later.

J-Raz is certainly an interesting fellow! Mostert is equal to Eben and Lood. You heard it from the big man himself. The thinking coach has spoken. Aus und vorbei!

Erasmus Boks have become like the Graeham Henry squad that had 2 test teams during the world cup year. However, it remains to be seen what their performances will be.

Rassie doesn't know his first team. Of the most certain selections we have Steph at 7, Damian at 12, Kriel at 13, Kolisi at 6. That already dramatically limits the team. We'll see what else he has up his sleeve. By the looks of things, we can add Lood to the mix. We have the talent to be a force at the WC, but these players cannot make us a contender.

@Sitzsack: Jake fielded his first team for the first two tests against Samoa, Australia and New Zealand. He rested them from the away legs, then fielded his first team in the final two warm-ups. Rassie is putting all of his eggs in one basket. The worst part is that New Zealand have been using the TNs and RCs in a WC year for tinkering, fine tuning the team, not for winning the competition. So what will we learn going forward? Not as much as you'd think. Australia have twice been given a false sense of security winning the competition, beating New Zealand, only to be put to the sword with ease whilst the All Black machine rumbles right over them.

Limits the team according to the biggest rugby ignoramus ever.   He wants two SR level players like Esterhuizen/ Fat Fransie Steyn and Am in the team.  Du Toit is one of the best players in world rugby - but he and his fellow ignoramus wants him out,   They would rather see the useless and slow Louw in the team.  These players would not make it into any other WC test squad - but for our local idiots they are a must,

The funny part is they are too ignorant to realize when players buggers up and give them credit for the bugger-ups.   They pretend to see things nobody else sees and do n ot mind writing false reports

Erasmus is not a fool like Meyer who in the 2015 WC f#cked up royally in his teams election picking 8 unplayable players based on reputation.   Fact is after the  Japan disaster the idiotic coach was forced  into playing the same players in all games  without the chance of a rest day like other teams did.  In the end they were tired out completely.   Al this with the screaming support of the idiotic two.

Happy idiot day to them.

Steph is not a world class 7. If you want bias, what of the video I posted of the missed tackles and clean breaks he allowed in Wellington? Things you vehemently denied occurred? You refused to acknowledge video evidence. You have always fought against video evidence, going so far as to call it a gross fabrication of the truth. That sums up your rugby acumen and honesty.

When and where have I ever excused a player for a mistake? Or lied about said mistake?

I can quote dozens of instances where you have outright lied to attack another player.

  1. You blamed Morné for a try that was conceded after he was subbed by Goosen. Goosen was run over by Nonu which allowed New Zealand to breakout for a try. You lied.
  2. You blamed Andre for the first loss to Wales last year. It was his "stuff ups" which "royally condemned" the Boks.
  3. You blamed Andre for the Brisbane loss he didn't play in, yet denied everything Andre did which contributed to our win over Australia a few weeks later.
  4. You blamed Morné for the Stade loss to Krasny Yar. His aimless kicks and poor defence cost them team dearly. As it turned out, he wasn't playing. Not even on the bench. You still held firm in the belief that Morné was the culprit. Your man Plisson was running the show at 10.
  5. You blamed van Staden for the Puma try which resulted from Willemse throwing the ball over him. You even got the test wrong. You claimed it was in Salta. All of this to defend Willemse.
  6. You blamed Andre for costing the Boks a draw against England after being shoulder-charged in the face. What a supporter you are! Not once have you ever acknowledged the poor pass of Papier or the penalty by Damian which gave England the lead!
What a laugh you are Mike. Keep externalizing your own flaws onto those around you. It provides me with much amusement.

What a long list of sins.   I blamed Morne for missing 7 kicks at goal in the test under discussion - not the try you said Goosen caused.

I blamed Morne for two tries scored by the AB's when tries was scored by the AB's in Johannesburg in 2013 - he made 7 tackles and missed four that day and he had a brain fart which led to another try.

I also blamed Morne or the Perth test loss - 100% for what he buggered up.   8 tackles made 7 missed.   Even Meyer drop ped him from the team after that effort.  And then there was that penalty line kick that ended up 5 meters from finding touch.

Andre did what in that test?   Nothing much in the Johannesburg test anyway - Andre buggered up badly,   His test record was  6 played 4 losses - enough said.

Yes, you did. I had to post that video so we could all see the lineout in question. You disputed that Goosen left the field after the try, that the try was Morné's fault. You are tangling yourself in your own web Lügnerin. You stated the Boks lost that test exclusively through Morné. You denied Goosen's involvement in the first try and denied his involvement in the second when he wandered off leaving an entire ruck fringe exposed. You blamed Greyling for that one. A player who had yet to arrive and take up a position! The scores were level at 12-12 when Morné was subbed. Not the kind of draw you claimed Andre ruined at Twickenham last year.

Morné wasn't responsible for any tries. The Barrett try is the one you refer to most often. Barrett was not Morné's man. Jean jumping the line caused the entry point, and JJ fluffed his tackle. End of discussion. The next was a slipped tackle as Morné was the fourth defender back on scramble defence. It was a no hope tackle. To blame him for that All Black breaching the defence is an absolute disgrace. Hence, I forewarned Herr Draht that your nose knows no limits.

You are embellishing those numbers in the 2014 Wallaby test. You are also, yet again, ignoring how the Wallabies managed to advance the ball 60m and score. The last we discussed this game, you even disputed the weather conditions. Lying once more. It was windy, with a drizzle. I stated that Morné made a mistake pushing for distance in those conditions. Had Morné kicked into the hands of a player who beat a wrong footed defence, such as the Damian clearance which led to Lambie's try in against the sharks in 2015, I'd have blamed him exclusively. That didn't happen. The Boks pressed with a solid line. Serfontein was beaten, so too Lambie who rushed out of the line and took out the wrong player off the ball. All this, yet you only see Morné as the culprit. One would expect the Boks to defend 60m of ground for a minute or two.

"He buggered up badly". Same old, same old. What did he do wrong? How about the first few seconds of the game where he contributed to Aphiwe's intercept try? He continually forced the Wallabies wide early, throwing off their attacking game. Desperate stuff from old Lügies.

No - there was also Ben Smith's try where he ran through Morne and to say that Barrett was not his man to tackle is a bad joke on your part.   Then there was he madness of nort a relieving kick seconds before the end of the first half of that game.

Morne did make 8 tackles and missed 7 in that game and he missed to find touch with a penalty relieving kick - that would have brought back Habana on the field.

An aimless kick - and Morne made thousands of those in his career -  cause counter-attacks which is extremely difficult to defend against and the defense is disorganized in such a case.   The fact is  that it was a penalty kick made follow up desultory - nobody expected a f#ck up made by Morne in that case.   I normally do not blame individuals for test losses - but in this case the individual was totally to be blamed and no amount of hogwash from you will prove anything to the contrary,

I know in your world the 10 only ever defends 10, 12 only defends 12. Hence many gaffs last year on your part! Many laughs were to be had.

Here are the time stamps for Morné's tackles in the Ellis Park test. I dare you to attempt a refutation - the game is available on YouTube:

00:26 - Dagg runs at Jannie and beats him. Steyn covers across and grabs him. Dagg gets the offload to 14.

10:30 - Morné brings down Retallick.

10:56 - New Zealand breakout down the touchline for a try. Read beats Alberts takes contact from Habana but slips an offload to 14 who steps inside Eben and darts for the try line; Morné cuts across field but can only manage to clasp his shirt which isn't enough to stop him from behind.

24:41 - 14 charges into Morné who brings him to ground

25:19 - Nonu steps inside Morné into Jean. Morné got hands on him from behind.

25:30 - New Zealand on Bok tryline, Morné solitary defender on left of ruck; Retallick, Messam and McCaw steadily drive him back and score try number two.

40:43 - Vermuelen is beaten by Retallick, Morné grabs his upper body and takes him down.

53:58 - Savea breaks a Le Roux tackle down the touchline, Morné pursues and grab him from behind taking his legs whilst Steenkamp thumps his upper body; both bring him to ground a couple of feet in front of the tryline preventing a certain try.

60:17 - 22 cuts past Jean and through a gap, Morné unable to get a grip on Beauden as he pulls to JJ and breaks out for a try.

79:37 - New Zealand turnover, breakout down the touchline through Dagg. He pass inside hitting 23 with a miss-pass. Morné dives and shackles him from behind bringing him to ground and interrupting an attempted pass to McCaw, thus preventing a certain try.

We've already debunked your little theory on "aimless kicks". In fact, it was one of the very first things I did. You defined an aimless kick as any kick which ends up in the hands of the opposition, because this would definitively result in a counter attack. This isn't actually the case and provided several games worth of data to disprove this. I cited the entire Argentinian gameplan throughout 2007 into 2008, the Boks against Australia in 2013 and 2014 and the Hurricanes of 2015 - the latter three shutting down Folau and exploiting his acceleration and poor boot. The interesting thing is this: Why do you refuse to acknowledge the aimless kicking of the Boks last season? Is it that you are too biased to conceded ground to Meyer and Jake - the two most technically astute Bok coaches of all time? Even when those aimless kicks result in a try? Such as the Puma and Scotland tests?

You are truly a delight old man. Too funny for words. Be sure to pop a buspirone before responding. There's a good chappy.

Liar - Smith ran straight at Morne and he missed the tackle as per normal.   Back to Folau again - the fool keeps sputtering BS.  The fact is Folau i s a world class player - but idiot brain claims he is not.

Do you know what an aimless kick is?   Apparently not - you are a Morne fan so he does not know when kicks are effective, strategic or aimless,     There were aimless kicks for ure last year - but not more than 10%. of all kicks made.   Morne made 90% aimless kicks and that was a disaster - some commentators even made comments to the effect that he made BS kicks over the air.

So the fact is that the Aussies beat us regularly when Meyer was in charge 8 matches played - 3 losses.

Actually, the longest winning streaks against Australia after readmission are:

Streak 1 - Carel du Plessis, Nick Mallett

  1. 61 South Africa vs Australia 22 (23.08.1997)
  2. 13 Australia vs South Africa 14 (18.07.1998)
  3. 29 South Africa vs Australia 15 (22.08.1998)
Streak 2 - Jake White

  1. 33 South Africa vs Australia 20 (23.07.2005)
  2. 22 South Africa vs Australia 16 (30.07.2005)
  3. 19 Australia vs South Africa 22 (20.08.2005)
Streak 3 - Pieter De Villiers

  1. 53 South Africa vs Australia 08 (30.08.2008)
  2. 29 South Africa vs Australia 17 (08.08.2009)
  3. 25 Australia vs South Africa 32 (29.08.2009)

Streak 4 - Heyneke Meyer

  1. 31 South Africa vs Australia 08 (29.09.2012)
  2. 12 Australia vs South Africa 38 (07.09.2012)
  3. 28 South Africa vs Australia 08 (28.09.2012)

So of the four longest win streaks, Meyer's was the most dominant.

Aussie Record By Coach

Nick Mallett: 3W-5L-0D  43%
Harry Viljoen: 1W-0L-1D  50%
Rudolph Straeuli: 2W-2L-0D  50%
Jake White: 6W-5L-0D  55%
Pieter De Villiers: 4W-8L-0D  33%
Heyneke Meyer: 4W-3L-0D  57%
Allister Coetzee: 1W-1L-2D  25%
Rassie Erasmus: 1W-1L-0D  50%

Once again, old Lügnerin stumbles over his opposable tongue.

Meyer was also the coach whose first choice team lot against Japan and also lost all games in the RC.   He was also the coach whose teams who played the AB's  10 times and won  only one of those games despite in the winning game Matfield  f#cked up badly in both one of the losing games and the one they won.     In the case they played the AB's twice last year ad under Erasmus won the first game and came very close in winning the second.

The most clueless coach has a record that surpasses most of our other coaches, including J-Raz. That's your little problem. Just look at your insistence that Meyer began a losing trend against Australia. You made an assumption, and were shown up, as Meyer had a better record against them than any of the other coaches since readmission.

Another thing, why are our attack figures down in every category under Rassie? Why have our defence figures regressed under Rassie? Why the aimless kicking? We had a better record in 2017 than 2018. We also lost by 1 point against New Zealand, not 2. Was Coetzee not better? The jury is still out.

To conclude: Who lost the 2015 Wallaby test? Damian. Who were supposed to be our primary ball carriers against Los Pumas? Lood and Damian. They were overpowered. Where was Lambie, Kriel, Steph, Mvovo, Jean (first game back from injury), Lood et al against Japan? If you are going to bring these games up, lets bring up the names of the culprits that should not have been there. I hold these players accountable for their performance, then I held Meyer accountable for selecting them. That's a big difference between you and I. You separate the two whenever it's convenient for you.

AO

Your arguments are based on BS you dreamt up and ignore real facts like -

*   beating the AB's away;

*   scoring more tries than the hapless Meyer's  teams did in their first year as a coiach - to be factual - 32 tries against 22.

The other issues you refuse to accept is that Meyer  -

*    himself said that the Springboks do not have the skills to playa  ball in hand game and backline attacks were basically not used in Meyer's time, while when tries was through individual brilliance not team effort based on backline coaching;

*    was the coach that selected a dud squad for the 2015 WC - causing major problems through selection of unplayable players; and

*    was the worst coach imaginable when it came to team tactics  and comprehensive rugby,

An acceptable coach he never was.

@Moz: I don't know anything about Rassie's plans for Argentina other than Kolisi will most likely be playing in that game. I just read up on his injury status.

@Chippo: Careful now, or His Majesty Lügnerin von Klugscheißer III will dub thee an idiot too. He may exile you from the board (he wields great power in this realm).

@Lügnerin: How many times? Why must you be so willfuly ignorant. How many years separate 2012 from 2018? Six years is a long time in rugby terms. The game has changed, a lot. Lets compare RC records between years. 2012 is on the left of the backslash; 2018 on the right:

TRIES

  1. New Zealand 18/33
  2. South Africa 12/21
  3. Argentina 7/18
  4. Australia 7/16
CLEAN BREAKS
  1. New Zealand 45/107
  2. South Africa 19/64
  3. Argentina 18/72
  4. Australia 14/77
CARRIES
  1. New Zealand 574/860
  2. Australia 568/733
  3. South Africa 506/658
  4. Argentina 433/717
METRES CARRIED
  1. New Zealand 2541/3508
  2. South Africa 1723/2185
  3. Australia 1669/2453
  4. Argentina 1458/2575
DEFENDERS BEATEN
  1. New Zealand 101/198
  2. South Africa 71/121
  3. Argentina 69/153
  4. Australia 64/137
TACKLES WON%
  1. New Zealand 91.4%, 85.7%
  2. South Africa 90.0%, 85.5%
  3. Australia 86.9%, 80.9%
  4. Argentina 86.0%, 81.0%
What does this show? Attack numbers have been increasing, and defence has decreased quite significantly. Not as dramatically as Super rugby over the same period, but significant enough. The big difference is that under Meyer, the Boks were consistently #2 in the RC in almost every category, and #2 in the world. Under J-Raz, the Boks are bottom in almost every category. If you were truly a Mike of the Clever variety, you'd never have trailed down this murky lane, but that you did so for a second time is even more damning!
