We are now rated 7th in the world behind Scotland and not that far above France, Bargie and Fiji. Modal rating under HM was 2.....just a little factoid.

The Sprinboks were the best balanced team at RWC, except for the ABs......we could scrum, we could ruck, we could defend and attack the high ball, we had a great lineout and we had the rush defence.
What we didn't have was a great fetcher and passing skills in traffic.....the famed offload.
So what have we done? We have neglected all our strengths in pursuit of one of the two things we lacked....offloading. We haven't even made a concerted effort to improve our fetching.
All the glory, all the headlines......the Mitchell mania has all been in service of offloading. In the meantime we have lost our lead in all those areas of strength. We have no high ball game.....our defence is the worst in Super rugby....when last did we attack an opponents lineout?
We have made the classic strategic mistake and doggedly chased a me-too AB strategy. Instead of adding fetching and offloading to our strengths, we have sacrificed those strengths for one new skill.
It's been a stupid approach from the off....championed by dumb fans and the stupidest press in rugby. So now we are #7.

I think Rassie will climb the rankings, but almost certainly not to 2nd in the world. Comparisons with Meyer should factor in an increased quota target and a generally weaker squad on paper when compared to the likes of Matfield, JDV, FDP, Schalk, etc etc
Even if Pdivvy had good results, what would he do if he inherited a squad from Alister Coetzee?

Shark my argument is not about the relative merits of the coaches, it's about the need to find the skills we have lost, which now seem to be the core of the Irish success.

Eddie Jones said today that he expects Rassie to bring lots of traditional strengths of the Boks back. My guess is that Rassie is actually a better coach than Meyer. Although they are probably more similar than different.
Although the players themselves just have fewer skills, as well as more enforced selections than before. Even on 100% merit, our team lacks depth in many positions. Some of the 1st choices are still debatable international standard.

Agreed.....I suspect we will see some of the Boks' traditional game under Erasmus Head.
And agree we are woeful at centre, wing, scrummie and fetcher flank.
He has a tough job.

2018 could well be another 'annus horribilis' ....... England must start as favorites, the nightmare might continue at the 4Nations tournament & Rassie could be facing an EOYT with a played 10, won 2, lost 8 record. Jislaaik, with the Argies improvement it could be played 10, lost 10 & Sticky as our new coach.

Some may argue the point that Meyer gathered 3 SR trophies while Rassie gathered none. Some may argue that Meyer was on the field coaching, while Rassie was pushing a pen behind closed doors.
Yes ... we do have a lot of issues in various positions ... and it doesn't help if one uses 3rd rate quotas to fill these troubled spots.
Such a pity about the black man and his large chip.

Moz, you are on the money regarding a fetcher. It is the biggest problem we currently have. Wing, Center and Scrummy are also issues, but we simply don't have a fetcher. We need a fast, mobile 6 in the mold of Brussouw, instead we have Kolisi, who is mobile enough, but is no fetcher. On the other side of the scrum we don't even have a proper bruiser like Alberts or Juan Smith, so we can't even resort to the bully tactics of simply pushing opponents off the ball like in days gone bye. In other words, with the exception of Marx, who is injured, we have basically zero ability to pilfer or steal opposition ball.

Spot on, BlueBok.
The contest on the ground is already lost before the test match starts. It's an area that's highly targeted these days.
The Highlanders were really useless a few season back and that all changed when they targeted the breakdown with Adam Thomson. He turned their fortunes around with his skill on the ground. What a player he was.
The same thing can be said of the Kings and Chris Cloete. He made a massive difference to their season by using his skill on the ground. Where is he now?
The Boks have had blindside flanks playing on the openside since Brussow left. That includes Franscois Louw. We've even had Willem Alberts in the 6 jersey.
It stuns me just how stupid people can actually be.
