BOKS OUT TO 'SPOIL' PERTH PARTYl Rugby 365

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: AUSTRALIA UTILITY BACK DANE HAYLETT-PETTY HAS WARNED HIS SIDE TO BE WARY OF THE SPRINGBOKS' SMOTHER TACTICS.

 

The Wallabies host the Springboks on Saturday after two difficult Bledisloe Cup defeats to the All Blacks.

 

The hosts' upcoming task won’t be an easy one at nib Stadium, even putting aside the swirling Super Rugby uncertainty that remains, with the Springboks undefeated so far in 2017.

 

Which is a far cry from the dismal 2016 the South Africans had, where they managed just four wins from 12 Tests in a season that prompted a review of the team and its processes?

 

Wallabies utility back Dane Haylett-Petty warned his side to be more vigilant of the Boks’ desire to smother their attack tight.

 

"They’re a team with a lot of guys that attack the breakdown and will try and spoil our ball wherever they can and try and stifle our attack," he said.

 

Haylett-Petty made his return for the Wallabies in that Dunedin Test, after battling a biceps injury, and said he would be better for the run.

 

"I felt probably fitter after all the running we’ve been doing but it was good to get back out there after missing the first one and looking forward to this week as well," he said.

 

Meanwhile, Australia's lock Adam Coleman stated the threat of South Africa in the set piece could not be overestimated, after their impressive outings against France and Argentina.

 

Coleman was pulled out of the team on the eve of the second Bledisloe Test with a shoulder injury, replaced in the starting team by Rory Arnold and opening the opportunity for 21-year-old Izack Rodda to make his Test debut.

 

"I think their set piece is very strong," he said.

 

"[Lock] Eben Etzebeth has been playing some very good footy and their backline, they're very strong ball runners and ball carriers.

 

"They've got a lot of threats in many aspects of their game and we've got to really make sure we're on top of our set piece and our starters to really make sure we give us the best platform we can to launch off,"

Boks are playing on Ozzie turf and if the Wobblies bring the quality of rugby they been displaying lately it will be a tough game for the Boks.  Both teams are on the upswing, my guess is both teams will win their home game.

I thought he had identified the Boks most effective tactic so far this year....the gang tackle which morphs into a maul....but he is being more general. This tactic has created more turnovers than any other for the Boks. They have taken beyond a smart thing to so....to a very deliberate planned tactic. .. This will be a defining test. The likely winners are Oz based on opposition to date, but the Boks have a chance if the defence holds up and Jantjies has a good day with the boot.

 Good assessment Moz, I agree. It should be a good match to watch for tactics and as both sets of backs can use the ball we will hopefully get some thrills. Let's see if the wobblies try and put a lot of pressure on Jantjies to rattle him.
IMO the Wobblies have a critical advantage at half back so we will see how effectively the Boks contain Ginea (he's in good form). Boks should have the advantage at flyhalf.

I think there are still problems with thee potential selection of the team based on the present squad.  
The defense of the wings - especially Rhule - is very poor and borders on the non-existing,    I also have problems with the thoughtless crashball tactics of the two centers and with the loosie combination.   I think with Whiteley out - they should have gone with Coetzee at 8 and playing Du Preez at 7.   
On the basis that the Springbok backline effectiveness is reduced by the above problems, I have my doubts about the Springboks ability to win the game.

 ...Anyone following what the drunken Aussies are up to will know that Perth is the home of the Force that has recently been unceremoniously dumped out of Superrugby...So there is a call for Western Australians to boycott this test match in protest....the question is will anyone turn up ?...There is of course thousands of what some are calling the yarpy boat people in Perth that will boost support for SA...
...there is also an Aussie billionaire there that offered the ARU $50 million to keep the Force but his offer was rejected...well he is now saying fk the ARU and he is going to bankroll the start up of a new rebel league made up of Indo - Oceanic teams...good luck with that...

It's tough for Oz & SA to play a decent game of rugby these days as political & financial issues are swirling around them all the time. ABs don't have those problems but do have the problem of individual players getting up to no good - these personal dramas don't help. Players must feel relieved when the finally can put on their rugby boots and trudge onto the field.

Playing in Perth could be a disadvantage given the news that they have been discarded by SuperRugby.  Will anyone go watch the match? Maybe more Springbok supporters, or more vocal ones

How can playing in Perth be a disadvantage, if there are more vocal Bok supporters. Are you speking in tongues again Shark? Beale's defence and the Aussie front row are the obvious points to attack...but can Coenis apply any real pressure and can Step exploit Beale's lack pf physicality? This was a test for Rohan to run over Beale and offload to a competent 13.

 I meant a disadvantage for Australia. Not much of a home game with the mugs that got thrown out of Super Rugby even though their team was better than the Rubell

Rohan over Jessica is a no brainer. He needs to up his game in Curry Cup to ensure he gets picked for the home games.
Beale is an uncertainty, no ones knows which one is going to show up. 

 I agree that the "home field advantage" is less in Perth, I read elsewhere that there is a large population of SA rugby supporters in Perth. However, being away from home does have an impact.  Boks will be in a better position for their own home game.

I live in Perth and am a Force and Springbok supporter, naturally!I'm stuck in two minds whether to go to the game. If I do buy tickets I'll be there in my Blues, and only if the half time entertainment is the necklacing of Cameron Clyne. That would bring back some memories of the good ol RSA.

Fortunately Quota Outa will select his usual bunch of chumps and scatter more unmerited boys on the bench.

The Ozzie backline seems rather potent. They don't have much of a pack to sboast about and so the Goats have a good shot at dominating up front ... even with the useless Beast and Coenie.

We'll see how they do at the breakdown. That is where the game will be won or lost.

 The key to a win for the Boks is to stifle Genia. The Wallabies have the better general at flyhalf who reads the game well and makes their play......cut it off at the source and the head will fall.

I'm not sure why everyone's so upbeat about Jantjies though. From what I've seen so far, Saturdays test is going to be his toughest this year and that means added pressure. We all know how well he copes under that .

Something else that I think the Ozzies would have worked on is their goal kicking. It cost them the match against the All Blacks. I'm expecting to see an improvement there.

 This game will define Jantjies, thus far he's what they say in Italian cosi cosi(so so), the doubts we have in him is brought on by his inability to take control of a game. Note, no-one to date thinks of him as a general or the general in back play simply because he does not read a game like a good flyhalf who has a rugby brain. He is a manufactured Flyhalf, a poor man's version of Carlos Spencer....period.

I'm looking forward to this game. The next 2 weeks will be a litmus test to see how far the BOKS has come and whether they will be competitive. I don't believe we should read much into the first 5 games.

 The last 5 games should be seen as a preparation for this weekend's game. The tempo will increase, errors will flow.....are the Boks up for it? The Boks still lack shape.....it's a worry.

Beale is their playmaker,must keep an eye on him and stop him with a first time tackle.
Hougard ja,I don't know,too predictable.The Aussies will be practising up and unders all week ,so maybe a whole different game plan,fast feed,cross kick maybe.

The new "spring in the step" of SA rugby might not be enough to defeat the Wallabys at their home grounds but it is nevertheless a lot better than it was last year...

When Mr Ackerman had coached the Lions back to be the future hope and direction of SA rugby...I,  at that stage hoped and said his presence and rugby model should be our future...I was mocked and ridiculed by some on this forum...nevertheless some of this influence has been felt but sadly Ackers has departed. However there might well be a game on hand on Saturday...surely a big improvement of falling a victim to Japan and Italy. We will soon see if our recent victories to a tired and second string French side and recently to an ordinary Puma side have at least some substance. Perth is not an easy venue to win against a regenerated Aussie side. Nevertheless I'm giving this one to the Boks by 3-5 points.

 Perth is an easier venue than Sydney or Brisbane, if memory serves me right the Boks have never won in Sydney and haven't been greatly successful in Brisbane, well certainly not like they've been in Perth. 
With a decent coach I think the Boks would be a huge chance.....I 'm tipping the Wallabies by 9

 I hope the boks get the their kicking game right and ball in hand retention. I'm a bit worried about ball carriers. There is absolutely decent ball carriers in the back 3 that can smash it app and draw in defenders. We will lose the ball in contact if we try to go wide to early. 
Isreal Falua is also a real threat from the back. Complete tore us to shreds on a number of occasions when ever we kicked on him. We have no real ball contenders that can compete in the air against him. 
I would almost shelf the cross kick unless Folau has been drawn in on defence. 
I don't think the wobblies use a rush defence but are vulnerable in the 13 channel, but kuridrane is back so that door might be shut. 
We need to look out for Genia breaking the line. He tore the all blacks to shreds and ignited their long range try scoring ability. 
That said, the guys should just play with the ball and keep them tackling. That will be the only way to shut them down. 
Kick for touch when you can, draw them into line outs, force the error and compete in the scrum. 
Move the ball around a bit but don't go wide, our outside backs are way smaller than the aussies, only chance is to beat them with pace. 
So maybe they should focus in the tackle area and be prepared to tackle well and scramble for when the defence is breached. 

 Destructive playstyle feared from the SA side part. Apart from ruining others' attacking moves and scoring on counters, the SA side can not do much more.

 The Bok tight five is looking good. One question mark is Coenie. Can he continue his good performances thus far. The loose trio could be okay IF the tight five dominate. I have my doubts about the loose trio which might not suffice against the wee abs later on.The dynamic Faf de Klerk has been left out as has Janse Van Rensburg but the biggest question mark hangs on Rhule whose defence is weak. Pollard needs some rugby at Vodcom level and a bit of a build up.I will be surprised if he is on form.

 Just read that Hallett -Petty is out for the rest of the year with injury. This will weaken the Wobblies as I for one always rated him as a player. Good news for Boks I guess.
