The following from News 24:-

"If we have an injury at fullback I will ask Boeta Chamberlain or Lwazi Mvovo to play there before I'd ask Curwin to, we want him to specialise as a flyhalf," said Everitt.

According to the new Sharks coach - this will be Everitt's first Super Rugby season in charge - Bosch is supremely motivated not only to nail down the flyhalf berth at the Sharks as his, but to challenge strongly as the man the Boks will turn to during the next four year cycle building up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

"Curwin has a real spring to his step at the moment. He has extended his stay with us by another two years and he is extremely motivated. He wants to stake a strong claim to be the Springbok flyhalf," said the Sharks coach.

Everitt didn't say so, but with some of the other captaincy candidates such as Louis Schreuder and Jeremy Ward playing in positions where there is strong competition for places, there is a possibility that Bosch, even though he is still just 22 years of age, could take on a leadership role next year.

With the Maties' former Varsity Cup winning flyhalf Jordan Chait having moved to Durban, and with Chamberlain having played a clutch of Currie Cup games last year when Bosch was injured, there is back-up at pivot. And Sanele Nohamba's emergence during the last Currie Cup season means there is more than enough option for Everitt in the other halfback position too.

"Louis Schreuder is overseas but will be returning for Super Rugby and Sanele's progress last year means that there will be really good competition at No 9," said Everitt.

"There's been a lot of vibe and energy in the squad during the off-season preparations for next year. We have lost a lot of experience but we have many youngsters on our book and they bring energy and I’d say we have a young squad but a good squad.

"The four Springboks will be returning in December, as will guys like Curwin and Andre Esterhuizen, who are currently with the Barbarians. Obviously Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi will need looking after and careful management in the build-up to next year as they have played a lot of rugby.

"Thomas du Toit has been playing at Toulouse but he hasn't had that much game time so he will be okay. There are a couple of other players who have been on loan (such as Juan Schoeman at the Southern Kings) but they will be back in time for our final preparations for the new season.”

The Sharks kick off their 2020 Super Rugby campaign with a home derby against the Bulls at Kings Park on January 31.

Their first warm-up game is against Russia in Durban on January 10."

I was not impressed with Bosch's performance at flyhalf in the Barbarians game against Fiji    Fact is he just did not get the backline going 0 but then he had Esterhuizen at 12 and that really was a handicap.    He seems to have decision-making problems and that is no good for a flyhalf,

They have a player on contract which I think was excellent in the Varity Cup Maties team and I imagine  he would ion the end being the flyhalf for the Sharks if Bosch does not shape up.

I think this is a mistake. Bosch is a much better fullback than a flyhalf.

Bosch has his flaws, but SA generally has limited options at flyhalf - with more options at fullback. I would stick with Bosch at 10.
Robert Dupreez junior was a cart-horse on the worst of days and totally inconsistent on the best of days.

SB'

The problem with some SA flyhalfs always was a deficient reading of the game = as well as the ability to act to best advantage in accordance what developed during games.  The second issue was the so-called game plan that caused serious problems for the team as a whole and the tendency to play 10-man rugby reducing backline performance drastically.

There was rare exceptions in the past decade like Goosen, Lambie and Pollard,  Serious injury hamstrung the first two and h only real success story was Pollard.    The latetr obviously benefitte from the approach of Erasmus in the relevant regard.

There are very few really class flyhalfs at present available to play for SA,   My problem with bosch I mentioned earlier - and Jantjies is not the answer at all,

I think Willemse will grow in performance and I think a player watch out for is Jordan Chait playing this year for the Sharks,

Bosch had a bad game for the Barbarians, 2 weeks ago. Even Morne shit Steyn was better.

However, he has had good games for the Sharks- so I back him to get better. He can read games well and break defences down with his allround game. His defence is still terrible but not as bad as it was.

Poor Mozart

He still does not know there are poor kicks and the difference between poor kicks and strategic ones,   Watch any game the past nine years and any objective person would find that 70% at least  of his wonderful hero Morne's out-of-hand kicks  fell in the BS category,

At the moment all one can say is Bosch is a flowed player. To succeed he must improve his defence for starters.

Robert Du Preexz has everything necessary to succeed. Nerds a good coach to get him going.

Jantjes has matured as a player and the criticism of him is harsh.

Get a tutor for Bosch, he has natural talent but needs to learn his position over a couple of seasons, he's a slow burner that one. Rob Jr is most likely as good as he's going to get.

I prefer Bosch at 10 because of his defensive frailties.

Bosch is Ford without the pass...a natural prey. His best player model is Christian Cullen, who also flopped at centre. Keep this weakling at the back where he has space and can use his best asset, the boot .

Nope he is a quality attacking player at 10 or 15, is certainly a gifted player but his size is an issue. Unless he bulks up he can forget about being a long term test player More chance of getting exposed defensively at 15 than 10 where more space is his enemy. At 10 he can be covered - hardly ideal He is not ready for test rugby and I’m not sure he has the frame to accommodate bulk

Dave

Mozart is carrying on about Ford being inadequate and praise Morne Steyn, he worst defender I have ever seen at flyhalf.    That means he does not understand the  tole of the flyhalf in games,

There are two issues attached  to flyhalf play and those relate to -

*    being the pivot in the game;

*    the physicality required for performance.

The first point relates to reading of the game and decision-making to ensure that the team gain maximum benefit from ball possession either through backline usage, personal effort or though passing or strategic and accurate effective kicking,

The second issue relates to personal physical endeavor.  Mozart criticized Ford after he became the bunny of the best player this year in the world,   Is that really as bad as he is making out to be?

So lets get to Bosch - you refer to the physical problem with the physicality issue insofar as Bosch is concerned but I think that Bosch has problems  with both issues,  As a pivot some of his decisions are questionable, but whereas  in the case of Morne decision-making was a foreign concept he did not understand Bosch does better, he is  by no means as bad as Morne was,   He is still very young and may benefit from specialist coaching and the jury is out on that one,

In essence Bosch is not on test level at present, bu t then the far worse Morne became one - so nothing is impossible,

Cleverwanker you forget Morne came on for Bosch last weekend  and immediately 'made a difference'. Not my words, the commentators'. Given 5 more minutes he wins the game.

This country doesn't have any stars at 10. Pollard is the best you have and to be honest, he's not exactly up there with the worlds best. He has a relatively good shot at posts but nothing else, much like Jantjies, Bosch, Morne Steyn and Du Preez.

You have no choice but to work with these 2nd rate players.

Willemse showed some promise but seems to be following Lambie as a fill in from the bench. Then at 15, then at 10.

It stuns me how stupid the selectors can be in this country. Consistently stupid. One would swear they know nothing about the sport.

We now have two elderly hasbeens in the Lions mix. Did those in charge honestly think that these two acquisitions would strengthen the team? Surely not? Will they be starters? Heaven help the Lions in 2020.

Mapimpi returns to the Sharks as a much improved rugby player ... and the Stormers have a superstar in Herschel Jantjies. Other than these two ... who else came through the 2019 season showing promise?

In truth I can't think of anyone. A whole season gone by ... out of the thousands, only two players step up.

The Goats are looking for a replacement at 8. Who will that be? Another hasbeen from up north?

As I've said ... 2020 promises to be an interesting year.

CC

Th fact is that Erasmus from the start realize there were several problem position and he last year asked that the Stormers plays Du Toit at 7 and Willemse at 15 - as well as asking the Lions to play Mostert at 7 and the Sharks to play Bosch at full back.   The idea with Mostert and Du Toit could be moved since we had adequate lock cover and the same cannot be said about the blindside situation was rather problematic.   Du Toit past the test and became the main player at 7 - Mostert did not,.

The full back position was difficult since although Le Roux was first choice selection. but their was no real back-up.   It was also preferred that the back-up player should be  able to cover both positions.  Bosch did not past the test and Willemse did well enough - but got injured at a critical time - lucky for Steyn or Jantjies or both Willemse came back to play rugby only two weeks before the team announcement and was not in the original WC squad, but became an injury replacement when Kriel was injured.

I think that Le Roux will not make it through to the next WC and I believe the players with the best chance to replace him will come from amongst Greene of the Lions and Muller du Plessis of the sevens squad.   The latter will start playing 15 man rugby after the 2019-20 Sevens season and the Olympics.

I think Willemse will remain in contention as flyhalf and will be in the next WC squad ahead of Jantjies and Steyn.  The guy is still very young - bit I think he will under correct coaching develop into a very good flyhalf.  He has pace and a step and that would help in getting the backline play more attacking rugby.

As to the upcoming season I believe that the Stormers have a good chance of being the most successful  in the SA Conference log    What I am really interested in is to see which youngsters come through for future selection.   That is why I am disappointed in the contracting of the rugby geriatrics by some franchises,

“Posted by: mozart (29927 posts) Dec 02, 2019, 07:21 Nonsense Dave.” Agree. Bosch was useless against Fiji. But.... if Ou Dawie wanted to polish Bosch’ marble he should have used his performance for the Barbarians against Wales. Totally opposite of his game against Fiji. He only made one of those stupid little cross kicks and one loose long pass, that I can remember, and the fact that Wales won had nothing to do with Bosch. He was really good on Saturday.

Not making excuses for Bosch against Fiji but it's a BaaBaa's game, there's a multitude of reasons why he may not of fired. Getting caught up in the mystique of Barbarians' famous playstyle, unfamiliar players and also not playing for a month or two. Let's not use these games to write him off.

Against Fiji he mostly played the exact opposite of BaaBaa’s rugby. He made this silly cross kicks, sometimes in their own 22, at one stage costing them a try IIRC, and some real stupid long passes into no man’s land. Against Wales he returned to typical BaaBaa’s rugby. Quick, swift passes, quite a number of clever little breaks, etc.

I'd argue that a cross-field kick in your own 22 is a very BaaBaa-like move, he was just picking the wrong moments to do so. A lot of his passes against Wales didn't go to hand either often taking a bounce before it got to someone. His kicking out of hand was phenomenal though, which is something we've known but the commentators were introduced to, I expect Morne may have said a word there.
