Brandon Grace does the equivalent of a 30 ft long jump

The Open this year is not proving that challenging......wispy rough on at least one side of the fairway is widening the driving area. The greens are desperately slow at 10 on the stint, British Open courses are always slow...but hard, so balls tend to bounce off the natural slopes. Not at Birkdale where the greens have the receptiveness of a bunker....the ball stops. And it's a par 70, not a 72....making it technically 2 shots easier than most. .. Having said all that, 8 under par is fabulous score. And the pressure to actually break a record which has stood at 63 since Johnny Miller first did it on the brutal Oakmont course 44 years ago....is the same at the death. Dustin Johnson had an equal chance to pull off the 62, with a routine putt on 16 and a par 5 at 17 that his huge length could chop down to size. Instead it was Grace who rolled in a long putt on 16 and hit a pin seeking iron to the 17th green. .. So we will hear this wasn't the greatest round in Major golf, but it was a brave one of consummate skill......executed with a smile.
