Brendan Venter .... Boks are kak

Cape Town - Former Springbok centre Brendan Venter says that the national side performed worse in 2018 than it did in 2017 in terms of results and transformation.

Venter, who served as a defensive consultant under Bok coach Allister Coetzee last year, wrote in a column for the Stuff website that the Boks in 2018 had lost more games than they did last year while they also failed to reach the transformation targets that Coetzee did in 2017. 

"The Boks under (Rassie) Erasmus scored 37 tries and conceded 38, while Coetzee's side scored 39 tries and conceded 32. Erasmus guaranteed a 45 per cent transformation rate when he set off but only achieved 38 per cent, which is worse than Coetzee who posted 40 per cent," Venter wrote.

"From a purely numbers point of view, it's undeniable that South Africa failed to make progress under Erasmus this season. As a matter of fact, they were worse off this year.

"However, because they beat the All Blacks away from home, the cracks were painted over. Statistically speaking, Erasmus performed substantially worse in his first season than Coetzee did in his second season."

The brand of rugby is more compatible with the personnel available and the culture of South African rugby. Rassie has chosen an identifiable core of players. Coetzee was Straeuli, continually changing the squad and creating instability because he had difficulty identifying talent. 

That said, there are issue too concerning Rassie. The turnaround in fortunes against New Zealand began last year, the Kiwi media has identified this too. So the question becomes this: are we experiencing an improvement due to coaching or boost in personnel? I think the new generation players are only beginning to emerge the last two seasons, so I'd say the greater impact is in the latter. 

We lost 4 games last year, 7 this year. So it's mathematically impossible that we have been more competitive this year. We beat Argentina twice in 2017, drew twice with a better performing Wallaby side, lost to Wales by 2 points, not 8. We got hammered by New Zealand in the first test and by Ireland. Those were the only two heavy defeats of the season. Ireland would still have hammered us this year.

In 2018 we have been beaten twice by England, twice by Wales, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia. The attacking stats are down in every category aside from tries, which the Wellington test accounts for. So, we are playing exactly the kind of game the fans have been berating for years. This year is a step down from 2017 in alot of ways, even if I disagree with the playstyle Coetzee employed. 

Sure it is mathematically possible that the Springboks played two more tests than they did last year and lost both,  and the fact is that Erasmus tried three games to get a usable squad together,  All three those games were lost.   So I am not in a rush compare 2017 and 2018 results and certainly not comparing the scores last year with this year,

Most of the losses this year were by very small margins and the games could have gone either way.   That was not in line with what happened last year when there was only one small margin loss,

Next year we have interesting comparisons, but not with 2017 -  but with 2015 as it is a WC year,  So lets see whether there will be another Japan disaster.

Disappointing from Dr Venter who typically talks sense. Like many wee ab fans here he appears to be hugely guided by the scoreboard. Sensible oaks see deeper than that. A number of close games were lost from winning positions and here the players must look at them selves. Also Rassie gave players a chance as he had to test them out and give experience so LATE in the RWC build up.

Personally i couldn't give a toss about racist quotas. Pick the best or be shown to be a rabid racist. Time for World Rugby to put their foot down about SA quotas AND ANY TALK OF QUOTAS. Sheer hypocri sy going on!

Meyer's attack was more fluid and quicker developing. We struggled for ball carriers though towards the end. Had Meyer's Boks the power of this years team in 2014 and 2015 we may be reigning World Champions. 

Coetzee is an idealist who lacks application. He also can't identify talent.

Didn't you tell us all how much better of a coach Coetzee was to Rassie?? How he benefited so much from his predecessors ... how their discovery of players helped pave Rassie's way ... how the Boks played a far better running game under Coetzee ... blah, blah, blah ... !!!???
